Title Quizzes and Tests Blackboard has a wide variety of question types to facilitate assessment creation. These can be used for quizzes, tests or drill and practice for students. Begin in the Control Panel by clicking Course Tools. Near the bottom of the list you ll find Tests, Surveys, and Pools. Click this to begin. Here you are given the option to begin creating a test, a survey, or a pool. Brief descriptions for each are contained on this page. To create a test or quiz from scratch, click the Build Test button. Quizzes and Tests 1 March 10, 2017

The Test Information screen will allow you to give the test or quiz a name. When the test is ready to deploy, you will be given the option to show the description and/or the instructions to students. NOTE: While neither of these fields are required fields, it is recommended to be clear about the time allotted, the authorized aid policy for this assessment, general instructions. Hover your mouse over the Create Question button to see a list of the various question types. Calculated Formula Calculated Numeric Either / Or Essay File Response Fill in Multiple Blanks Fill in the Blank Hot Spot Jumbled Sentence Matching Multiple Answer Multiple Choice Opinion Scale / Likert Ordering Quiz Bowl Short Answer True / False Allows questions to contain formulas that have changing values with each student attempt Allows questions to contain pre-specified values in a formula Student responses can be Yes or No; Agree or Disagree; Right or Wrong Student responses can be multiple paragraphs Students upload a file as a response to a question Students must fill in more than one blank to answer a question. Students must fill in only one blank to answer a question. Students must click on a specified part of a picture to answer a question. Students must select from a dropdown list of possible answers Students must match two lists of variables Students can select the correct answer(s) from a list. The list may contain more than one correct answer. Students select the correct answer from a list. There is only one correct answer. Responses include: Strongly Agree, Agree, Neither Agree nor Disagree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree, Not Applicable Students must put a list of answers into the correct order. (e.g. Alphabetical order, numeric order, chronological order) Students must answer the question with an interrogative questions (Who, What, When, Where) Similar to an essay, however the student response is limited to less characters. Students must answer the questions with True or False as an answer. Quizzes and Tests 2 March 10, 2017

For this example, a multiple choice question is shown. The Question Title is optional. The question text is not. Answer numbering options include Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), Roman numerals (I, II, III), Uppercase letters (A, B, C) or Lowercase letters (a, b, c) Answer orientation is either vertical or horizontal You may choose to allow partial credit for some questions types You can also randomize the various answer choices. The default number of answer choices for the multiple choice question is four. You can change it. Enter your answer choices in the spaces provided. Be sure to indicate to Blackboard which choice is the correct answer. Correct answer placement is only important if you do not plan to randomize your answer choices (see above). Otherwise, you should try to randomize which answer choice is the correct one. Quizzes and Tests 3 March 10, 2017

If you are creating questions that you plan to add to a Question Pool for future use, it might be helpful to add categories, topics, levels of difficulty or key words to classify and sort the questions. Instructor notes are any reminders for you about the test or quiz. Click Submit and Create Another to add another question. Click Submit to finish. Tests, quizzes or surveys can only be added to Content Areas in Blackboard. There are two Content Areas in your course default menu. Those are Syllabus and Content. You can always add other content areas by Changing the Course Menu (see VITAL s website for instructions). Once inside the desired Content Area, hover over Assessments and select Test. Quizzes and Tests 4 March 10, 2017

Select the quiz or test from the list shown on the Add Test page. Click Submit. You will immediately be taken to the Test Options screen. Here you can change settings for deploying the exam. Here you can rename the test or quiz, if you choose. You also have the options to show the description and instructions to the students. Select whether you d like the test to open in a new window or not. Quizzes and Tests 5 March 10, 2017

Make the link available should be set to Yes if you wish the exam to be available to students right away or if you plan to change the Display After date. You may choose to add an announcement about the quiz or test. Students will only have one attempt unless you check the box and allow unlimited or a specific number of attempts. If you allow more than one attempt, you can decide which grade to record. Force Completion means that once the test is started, it has to be finished in one sitting. If this is not checked, students would be allowed to save their exam and come back to it later. This is often done with essay tests. If you wish to impose a time limit on the exam, set the timer and choose the length of time. You may also check whether or not to have the exam automatically submit when the time is finished or to allow students to continue to work. If you allow students to continue to work, you ll see how much time they have gone over. Setting the Display After and Display Until dates and times will restrict the length of time the link the students will click to begin the exam is available. It does not have any bearing on the time allotted to complete the test. Requiring a password is often used if students will be taking the exam with a proctor. Quizzes and Tests 6 March 10, 2017

If you have one or more students who need extra time, must take the exam on a different date or some other exception, you can make those changes here. You may choose to set the due date for this exam. By default, Blackboard will include a test score in the Grade Center calculations. However, if you are giving a self-assessment or pre-test, you may wish to exclude that grade from the calculations. If you do not wish to see a student s selfassessment results, you can hide them from the instructor view. NOTE: This decision cannot be undone or reversed. Quizzes and Tests 7 March 10, 2017

You can decide what the students will see when they finish their exam. The default setting will not show them anything except their score. You may choose to show them all answers, only correct answers or only submitted answers. You can also decide when they will see this information. The test presentation default is to show the students the questions all at once on one screen. If you choose to show them the questions one at a time, remember that each time the screen changes to the next question it may take a few seconds to load. Please include extra time for this option. You may choose to prohibit the students from going back and changing answers to previous questions. Randomizing the questions helps prevent students from looking at someone else s screen and trying to follow along. Quizzes and Tests 8 March 10, 2017
