2 GETTING HERE By Train: Get the train to Leuchars Station. Outside the station there is a regular bus service (any number 99) to St Andrews Bus Station. For bus times and numbers see: There are also taxis waiting directly outside the station at Leuchars. Alternatively, there are direct bus services to St Andrews from Edinburgh city centre (Stagecoach X59, hourly, 2.5 hours) and Glasgow (Stagecoach X24, hourly, 2.5 hours, from the city centre and Glasgow airport). X59 from Edinburgh: X24 from Glasgow: By Plane: Fly to Edinburgh Airport. One possibility is then to take the bus directly outside the airport terminal to either Waverley Train Station or Haymarket Train Station Edinburgh itself. Then, take the train to Leuchars Station followed by the bus to St Andrews as above. Alternatively, catch the Jet 747 bus from outside the airport to the Ferry Toll bus station. From there you can catch another bus to St Andrews.
3 CONFERENCE VENUES Guest Lectures and Student talks Both of the guest lectures and all the student talks on the 18 th and 19 th of January will be held in the Bute Building, Lecture Theatre A. Talks will start at 9am on both days. Address: Bute Building, University of St Andrews St Andrews, Fife, KY16 9TS Please use the main entrance at the south end of the building, off Queen s Terrace (pictured below). MSc Careers Panel Event Dr Luke Rendell will be hosting a careers panel discussion entitled Early early career: After the MSc. Although his event is particularly aimed at Masters level students in marine mammal science and marine biology, all are welcome to attend and invited to ask questions. The panel will consist of scientists from a range of career stages and so the discussion will be relevant to students of all levels. This will start at 3pm on 17 th of January (before the ice-breaker event), so please remember to arrive early if you would like to attend. This will also take place in the Bute Building, Lecture Theatre A.
4 Workshops Coding Club: Manipulation and visualisation of spatial and population data The first workshop Coding Club will be held in the Bute PC Lab (Room A21), Bute Building on the afternoon of Thursday 18 th. In collaboration with Gergana Daskalova and the University of Edinburgh, the workshop will cover top tips for coding, data manipulation and visualisation in the statistical software R. If you would like to take part in the coding club workshop, please could you bring your own laptop for this session. We will have ample power sockets available but no spare computers. If you are not able to bring a laptop, you are of course welcome to sit in and pair up with another student. Please make sure that you have R Studio and R installed on your laptops this is free to download and you will need this to take part. We will send out a link with further workshop materials closer to the time. Below are the links for both Windows and Mac users: Promoting yourself and your research The second workshop will be held in Parliament Hall on Friday 19 th afternoon- access is directly from the pavement on South Street. Postdoctoral researchers at the Sea Mammal Research Unit will run this interactive workshop, featuring discussion and advice on how to share your work on social media, as well as mastering those all-important CVs, posters and conference presentations. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring note-taking material.
5 FOOD AND DRINK Tea and Coffee Breaks We will be providing tea and coffee during the breaks, but please BRING YOUR OWN MUG. There will be access to water for refills if you bring your own water bottle. These breaks will take place in the seating area outside the lecture theatre in the Bute Building. Lunch Lunch is not provided, but as the conference is situated in the centre of town we are within walking distance of numerous cafes, pubs, food outlets and supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsburys). You are welcome to bring your own lunch or bring back food to eat in the seating area in the Bute Building. Talks STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS If you signed up to give a presentation, please could you bring your slides on a USB stick and upload your files to our projector before your talk. Please do this either before 9am on the day of your talk, or in one of the coffee breaks on the day of your talk. 15 minute talks: 12 min talk, 3 min for questions 5-minute speed talk: Up to a 5 min talk Posters If you signed up to bring a poster, this can be either A1 or A0 in size, portrait or landscape. Please bring this to registration on the first day. If you can try and stay near to your poster during the poster viewing sessions on 18 th and 19 th January to answer any questions, that would be great!
6 ACCOMMODATION Staying with Students There are a limited number of beds / sofas available with St Andrews students attending the conference. These will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so if you d like to stay with a student please contact us directly via (ukrsc@st-andrews.ac.uk) and we will let you know whether there are still beds available and will put you in touch with your host. Accommodation in St Andrews St Andrews has one youth hostel that is located in the centre of town. St Andrews Tourist Hostel St Andrews also has a huge number of Bed and Breakfasts within town itself and further towards the outskirts of town as well. These may be pricier than the hostel, but they will be quieter and provide breakfast. We recommend that you search for your accommodation through as this will give you the best price for hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in the area. Also have a look on Airbnb ( as there are some decent offers here also.
7 CONFERENCE ICEBREAKER THE 17 th OF JANUARY 8:00pm at St Andrews Brewing Company Mini book launch of Whales: Their past, present and future Icebreaker event with some complimentary vegetarian and vegan finger food and discounted drinks. Other food and drinks will also available from the bar. As part of the launch of this newly published book, we will have a book signing event with some of the authors, and will have a limited number of signed copies of the book to sell at a bargain price of 8! Please bring cash if you would like to buy one. If you already own a copy, you are also welcome to bring it along to be signed! The idea of the icebreaker is for the conference attendees to get a chance to meet each other and chat before the talks and workshops start the next day. These grants are available but not guaranteed, and generally grants will only cover a portion of the incurred travel costs.
