1 COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: PSYC 2301 GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: This course is a survey of the major topics in psychology. It introduces the study of behavior and the factors that determine and affect behavior. INSTRUCTOR: John T. Each unit will consist of two chapters as follows: Chapters 1 & 2: Discovering Psychology and Psychology and Science Chapters 5 & 6: Sensation and Perception Chapters 9 & 10: Classical Conditioning and Operant & Cognitive Approaches Chapters 15 & 16: Motivation & Emotion Chapters 19 & 20: Theories of Personality There will be a test at the end of each unit. There will be a critical thinking assignment that must be completed by the student. Quizzes and extra credit work may allow the student to earn extra points throughout the semester. These points will be added to the test grades. In order to get the extra credits, students must be in class the day the assignments are given and take the test in class on the day it is scheduled. There will be no exceptions. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify various research methods and their characteristics used in the scientific study of psychology. 2. Describe the historical influences and early schools of thought that shaped the field of psychology. 3. Describe some of the prominent perspectives and approaches used in the study of psychology. 4. Use terminology unique to the study of psychology. 5. Describe accepted approaches and standards in psychological assessment and evaluation. 6. Identify factors in physiological and psychological processes involved in human behavior.

Class discussion on the modern applications of Freud s theories. Class discussion on Humanistic theories and the Self. Test on Modules 19 & 20 Test will test concepts presented in Chapters 19 & 20 over different theories of the personality. (Critical Thinking)

CLASS POLICIES: 1. Regular and punctual attendance at ALL classes is expected. After the 12 th class day the Student is responsible for withdrawing from the course; otherwise, a grade of F will be assigned to the student at the end of the course. 2. It is the responsibility of the STUDENT, not the professor, to arrange for makeup work. You may be allowed to make up work if your absence is due to a personal illness or emergency that is excused by the professor. Calling in does not make the absence excused. A written explanation from an appropriate authority may be required. 3. You must make arrangements to make up your work on the first day of your return to class. The make-up work must be completed as soon as possible. 4. Assignments from this course are subject to being archived for general education assessment. Procedures will follow protocols as prescribed by the research guidelines of the Association for Institutional Research.

You are providing information that your reader may use in seeking further knowledge on your topic, or on a subtopic or peripheral topic that you have treated only briefly. b. You are providing a means whereby another person may verify the accuracy of your use of sources. c. Copying files from a student s disk and submitting to yours is another example. d. Intellectual honesty is fundamental to scholarship. Accordingly, the College views plagiarism or cheating of any kind in academic work as among the most serious offenses that a student can commit. Academic dishonesty can result in a grade of F or 0 for the particular test or assignment involved. A student wishing to contest this ruling must do so within one (1) week after return of graded papers.

7 Communicating with your instructor (MyMail System) All official college to students is sent through MyMail, the official student system at TSTC Harlingen. When communicating with instructors and/or employees of the college, you are required to use your TSTC MyMail student address. If you choose to forward your to another account, please be advised that you must respond from the MyMail account. TSTC Harlingen faculty, staff, and students are asked to report all threats, perceived or real, immediately to College Police located in the Auxiliary Building. If the threat is imminent, the College Police emergency phone line at or should be called. College Police will then coordinate the proper response in accordance with State and federal laws and TSTC System/College rules and regulations. NOTE: Any changes to this syllabus will be provided in writing to the student and updated on all posted locations (HB 2504, course Moodle sites, building offices, etc Emergency/Safety In the event of an emergency, students should familiarize themselves with building and classrooms emergency exits/evacuation routes and be able to locate the nearest fire extinguisher. When an emergency alarm is activated, students should immediately leave the classroom, exit the building, and go to a designated safe area until clearance is given to go back into the building. Students should also register and be familiar with the Emergency Notification System..). The last day to withdraw from this course with a W is April 2, 2015.
