Tonight we are going review what we heard and ask for more clarity Where we are going? Workshop #3 we will check in on what we hear tonight and you will create an Action Plan for the community to move forward

5 WHAT WE HEARD: WORKSHOP 1 STRENGTHS - Section 6 is an opportunity for hiking if closed to vehicle traffic - Recreational/guiding services (rock climbing, hiking, camping, nature viewing, seeing the night sky ) - Be an environmental and economic sustainability model for the County - Outdoor education and learning trades through the community college (Cooper Mountain College

6 WHAT WE HEARD: WORKSHOP 1 OPPORTUNITIES - Section 6 is an opportunity for hiking if closed to vehicle traffic - Recreational/guiding services (rock climbing, hiking, camping, nature viewing, seeing the night sky ) - Be an environmental and economic sustainability model for the County - Outdoor education and learning trades through the community college (Cooper Mountain College)

7 WHAT WE HEARD: WORKSHOP 1 WEAKNESSES - Poor safety on Highway 62 due to lack of sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and high traffic speeds - No code enforcement to protect natural flora - Lack of jobs within town - Do not have a Municipal Advisory Council (MAC)

8 WHAT WE HEARD: WORKSHOP 1 THREATS - Outside developers who do not understand the culture of the area - Lack of money for infrastructure (sidewalks and bike lanes) - Increasing high-speed traffic on Highway 62 that ages the infrastructure more quickly - Too much light pollution caused by big box stores

9 VALUES VALUES - The natural beauty of the area. - Visitors from around the world who travel to the Joshua Tree National Park. - The community s reputation as an educational, artistic, and cultural center. - Abundant social amenities and a focus on sustainability and diversity. - The diverse group of local businesses, artists, and personalities who make life in Joshua Tree vibrant.

10 ASPIRATIONS ASPIRATIONS - Set an example for sustainability for the County as a whole. - For future growth in Joshua Tree to maintain the unique fabric of the community. - To serve as a gateway to the natural wonder that is Joshua Tree National Park. - Local businesses that provide the resident and the visitor with a unique desert experience. - Good access, excellent services, and opportunities that are consistent with the nature of Joshua Tree.

13 ACTIVITY 1: BREAK OUT STATIONS Two stations around the room: - Land Use - Values and Aspirations Statements Team member at each station to guide you through the activity

14 ACTIVITY 2: DEVELOPING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Goals explain what you want to achieve in your community. Objectives define strategies or implementation steps to attain the identified goals.

15 ACTIVITY 2: GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Each person writes one goal or objective per sticky note Share your ideas with the group Group common goals together

16 ACTIVITY 2: GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Using the themes your group has created: Discuss your top three goals We will record each goal on a flip chart Post on wall Identify presenter
