Segunda edición. Boston: Heinle & Heinle Materials: Loose-leaf, college ruled, white paper, standard dimensions. No spiral or bound notebooks that require tearing unless perforated. Spanish-English, English-Spanish Dictionary Course Description (Catalog): Advanced Spanish grammatical topics, idiomatic expressions, and continued development of writing skills based on the newly acquired concepts. Prerequisite: SPN 2201, or equivalent. Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to identify grammar concepts of the Spanish language and apply these grammatical concepts in writing, at a level approximating the advanced-high to superior. This is measured by the student s ability, when writing in Spanish, to: describe, narrate, predict and make recommendations via effective use of all verb tenses and moods, including the sequence of tenses accurately employ written accents and other diacritical marks effectively use pronouns, prepositions and idiomatic expressions The course: Special attention is given to the formation and usage of verbs. We also work on accents, pronouns, prepositions, idiomatic expressions and sequence of tenses. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish, both in presentation and student performance. It complements SPN 3760: Advanced Spanish Oral Communication and SPN 3420: Spanish Composition. These three courses will prepare students for literary survey courses and certain linguistics courses. You must already possess intermediate-level skills upon beginning the course. Evaluation: Grading Scale: Participation (5%) : A : C : D- Compositions (40%) : A : C 0-299: F Quizzes (20%) : B : C- Homework (10%) : B : D+ Final Exam (10%) : B : D Activities (15%) Attendance: Class attendance is an essential requirement for this course. You are permitted two absences per semester. You will lose three percentage points off of the final grade for each additional absence. Please contact me when you are absent, ahead of time preferably, to make sure you maintain adequate progress in class during your absence. Arriving more than 10 minutes late or leaving more than 10 minutes early counts as an absence. Participation: Active participation in Spanish is required at all times. Read the selections before coming to class. You should take part in class discussions, volunteer answers, ask questions and work in small groups, entirely in Spanish. About every three weeks, you will earn credit based on your performance during that period of time. You and your classmates will be the primary speakers in this student-centered class. 4-5: Very active participation, exclusively in Spanish. Always on task. 2 0-1 pts: Less or non-active participation, use of English. Distractor(s). Absent/late/leaves early. Compositions: You will write your compositions in class on the loose-leaf, college ruled paper that you provide; always have the paper with you. If you are absent, you will receive zero points. Some compositions will require you to incorporate information you have acquired from classmates in a previous class or on WebCourses. If you are absent on the day that information is exchanged or do not participate in the WebCourses discussion you will also receive zero points because you will not have the necessary tools to complete your composition. Compositions will be written on the dates indicated on the calendar. You may use your text and a dictionary. Please write legibly. Quizzes: Quizzes will cover either material from previous classes or material assigned for homework. There are no make-ups for the quizzes. Homework (Tarea): The activities represent extensive grammar-driven practice that will assist you in improving, internalizing and acquiring grammar skills. Complete the homework on loose-leaf, college-ruled paper and turn it in on the dates in the weekly schedule. In addition to these assignments from the text, homework assignments include handouts distributed in class. Each set of homework from the Manual de gramática counts as 10 points: five points for completion and five points for self-correction using the text answer key and highlighting corrections in a different color. Assignments must be stapled if written on more than one sheet of paper. Turn in assignments at the beginning of class due on Tuesdays. Assignments turned in without corrections will only receive ½ credit. Late assignments will receive no credit. Plagiarism Statement: In completing your assignments, please feel free to ask me what is acceptable and what is not. Any student who presents fraudulent work or work that is not entirely his or her own will minimally receive a grade of F and the incident will be reported to UCF s Office of Student Conduct, through which you will be required to attend an ethics workshop. Technology Statement: I fully support responsible use of any and all forms of technology in class. Webcourses: Webcourses will be used as a medium for turning in assignments, accessing class materials, or communicating with your classmates. My recommendation is to check Webcourses every 2-3 days.
