3 About the course Help people explore their passion for food and cooking using the internet. Many people love to cook for pleasure and the internet can be a great source of information. It has lots of recipe ideas and top tips from celebrity chefs. To help people get more out of life online, First Click has produced a handy guide to help course leaders plan and run an internet taster session using the theme of food and cooking. To get you started, we re recommending two themed sessions. You can choose to do one or both it s up to you. How to use the BBC Quick Recipe Finder to search for different recipes. How to use the BBC Food Techniques videos to help master a range of cookery skills. Preparation The BBC Food website has lots of useful information and interactive tools to help people search for different recipes, from everyday ones to special occasion dishes. It s important to familiarise yourself with the content on the website. Make sure you re comfortable finding and using the activities and tools as you may be asked questions by participants. You should familiarise yourself with the BBC Quick Recipe Finder beginner s guide and the BBC Food Techniques videos beginner s guide. These will help guide your participants through the basics of using the different tools on the BBC Food website. Food 1
4 During the session It s important that you explain what the session will cover. For example: Today we re going to look at how to use the BBC Quick Recipe Finder to search for recipes and ingredients using keywords such as cheese or lasagne. Invite participants to ask questions or talk about any concerns to help address the barriers and lack of confidence they may have about computers and the internet. Explain that participants will need some basic experience of computers and searching the internet. It may be helpful to run through this checklist to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and happy. Do participants know how to: Switch on a computer Use a mouse Use a keyboard Open a web browser Search the internet Be prepared for different levels of confidence and ability. It may be useful to run through some of the basic skills in the First Click Beginner Guide as a refresher before introducing the group to the themed resources. If you re running a group session, you may find some participants prefer to work in pairs. This may help them feel more confident. Remind participants to take turns so each person has a chance to search the website. Whatever style of session you choose to run - whether that s taking everyone through the BBC Food activity step by step or simply allowing them to jump right in and explore with minimal support - the main thing is to keep it fun and informal. At the end of the session, remind participants to take the guides home and continue practising. Some participants may not have a computer at home. If it s possible, explain that they can come back to use the computers in the venue and clarify how to book if necessary. If there s time at the end of the session, allow participants to continue exploring the website. Remind them that finding out about cooking and food doesn t stop with the BBC website. Invite them to explore other cooking and food websites. 2 Food
5 Practical hints and tips Some practical hints and tips to help you plan your session: Successful promotion is key! Think about a variety of communication styles and promotion methods such as eye-catching posters and leaflets, word of mouth and local press. Ideas box Why not ask your local GP surgeries, hairdressers or Post Office to display posters and leaflets for your event. Arrange help and support Decide whether you will need extra staff or helpers to run the session and arrange and agree roles. Check, check and check again Check your equipment and internet connection are working properly and that you can open the BBC Food website and relevant activities. Check that you have enough guides and handouts to give out to participants. Check the fire exits and toilets are clearly signposted. If possible use large print and large arrows to point people in the right direction. For more help and advice with planning and running a session, check out the First Click course leader s guide to running hands-on computer and internet sessions for beginners. Food 3
