5 Literacy Background Landscape City Schools is at an integral point in the continued work of the Literacy Curriculum. To date, we have: 5 Assessed the needs of students and schools through the adoption of diagnostic assessments Developed City Schools Model for Effective Literacy Instruction to support research-based comprehensive literacy instruction Supported planning and execution of MD College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS)-aligned literacy instruction through the selection of research-supported curriculum, resources and materials Reinforced the pedagogical shifts and the measurement of growth in the standards through the development of PARCC-like assessments. We need to continue to develop the pedagogy and planning process leveraging data along with our curriculum and materials to plan units to meet the demands of the standards.

Decide how to use these tools as a school. Complete First in Math survey to request the program by July 15, Develop a plan to get students invested in the program and develop metrics to measure progress throughout the upcoming school year. Agile Mind schools should work with ITD and complete the technology request form by the end of June. This form will be on CSI on Friday. Contact your ACL to order the Agile Mind Student Activity Workbook for grades 6 8 and Algebra I by August 1, 2014.

19 Our Goals for Science Education 19 We believe a strong science program allows students to: Experience and practice authentic science; Use evidence in order to validate their claims and/or validate or refute the claims of others; Apply scientific knowledge in unknown situations; and Understand that science is an ongoing process.

20 Overview 20 The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) focus on the integration of content, practices and cross-cutting concepts The NGSS will be supported by MSDE by Current: 5 th grade and 8 th grade MSA and Biology HSA remain in place Draft scope and sequences are being issued to show future content shifts Future: Fully developed curricular resources will begin to roll out to schools over a period of 3 years Writing begins this summer in grades K-2, 6 and HS Physics; remaining grades and content areas will be written in subsequent years Texts and other supplemental resources will be reviewed and recommended based on alignment to NGSS

21 Learning Science = Doing Science 21 To learn science, students must be able to do science: In an emphasis will be placed on supporting students and teachers as they do science through common investigations and design challenges, aligned to NGSS Teachers will look at student work from formative investigations & challenges and use the results as a progress monitoring strategy Kitted materials for these will be delivered to schools; science leads will help distribute throughout school Support for enrichment will be emphasized to provide more students with authentic science/stem experiences
