Welcome kids and families at the door for check-in 2. Survey environment to see if anyone is being left out. 3. Play games and activities with the kids. LARGE GROUP Purpose: Large group environment for learning about God s Word and worshipping God through music minutes. 1. Engage with the story and worship. Supervise students This week s story: Encourage one another 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Job 2:11-13 (Supporting: Job 1 2) SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 30 minutes Check for Understanding (5 Minutes) ESTABLISH your GOAL to talk about ENCOURAGING OTHERS. (If your group gets off track, remind them of the goal of the day) Bottom Line (Friends encourage Bible Story (1 Thessalonians 5:11; one another) Ask Job a 2:11-13) FEW of these questions to check for understanding on the Bible Story and the Bottom Line. When your group becomes restless from the questions, 1. What does then encouragement 1. What do you remember most end in prayer and continue mean? with the from other large activities. group today? 2. Why do you think 2. What do you remember most encouragement makes people from the Bible Story? feel good? What happens when 3. Was there anything that was someone never gets confusing? encouragement?
5 1. When Their Aren t Words (Bible Review/Application activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Bible; cardstock strips; crayons, markers, and/or colored pencils; decorative supplies Read Job 2:11-13 aloud. Point out that Job was in so much pain that his friends didn t know what to pray or to say. Explain that when we don t know what to say, one thing we can do for our friends is to pray a version of the Lord s Prayer. Hand out the cardstock strips and supplies. Guide the group to write down an outline of the Lord s Prayer acronym: A.C.T.S. o A stands for Adoration. Tell God that you remember how great He is. o C stands for confession. Tell God that you are sorry for your sins. o T stands for thanksgiving. Thank God for forgiving you and for everything He has done. o S stands for supplication. Supplication means asking for what we need. Ask God for things that you and your friends need. There s no need too small or too big to take to God. Then give kids time to decorate their bookmarks however they choose. Encourage them to take the bookmarks home and place them in their Bibles, devotional book, or another book they re reading. EXPLAIN that The moment with Job s friends that we studied today is actually the best part of their story. Sitting quietly with Job is the best encouragement they gave. Once they opened their mouths and started talking, they messed up big time. They gave Job such bad advice and hurt Job s feelings so much that eventually God himself showed up to tell the friends to be quiet! When our friends are hurting, we need to be very careful what we say. And if we don t know what to say, it s okay to just be with them without saying anything at all, and encourage them without any words. When we don t know what to pray for, we can use the outline of the Lord s prayer ACTS to give us some words to pray. After that, we can trust that God will understand our friends needs better than we do. [Make It Personal] (Tell about a time when someone encouraged you without using words.) [Bottom Line] Friends encourage one another. 2. Memory Verse Erase (Memory Verse Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Large white board or Small white board Write the memory verse on the large or small white board. Have the kids recite to memory verse of the month. Begin to erase a few words at a time and then recite the memory verse fully. Continue to slowly erase words until they say it from memory. AFTER CLASS 1. Set room up for next class (Clean up and set stations) am class, please clean up stations, place in bins and bring supplies to the collection bin at the CF Kids Desk. 3. Pass out Memory Verse Postcards to everyone.

7 Friends Love One Another Week 1 Friendship September 2-3, nd -3 rd OVERVIEW Bible Story: Love one another John 13:34; 1 Samuel 20 (Supporting: 1 Samuel 18 19) Bottom Line: Friends love one another. Memory Verse: A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes. Proverbs 17:17, NIrV Life App: Friendship using your words and actions to show others you care. BEFORE CLASS 1. Attend Huddle for prayer and announcements (20 min before service). 2. Review lesson and connect with other teachers. 3. Make sure stations and small groups are set up properly. STATIONS Purpose: Create a welcoming, informal environment for students to engage with one another. First 15 minutes of service. 1. Find a Friend Who (Opening Activity Teacher Guided) Supplies: Find a Friend Who page, writing supplies The objective of this game is for people to wander around the room and to obtain the signatures of people who fit the criteria on the page. Once a person successfully obtains a full row (5 in a row), whether horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, he or she shouts Friends! and wins. 2. Friendship Pie Recipe Supplies; Friendship Pie Recipe Page, Pencils Have the kids create a Recipe for what makes a great friendship. Help them use their past experiences to write the instructions for how to be a great friend. LARGE GROUP Purpose: Large group environment for learning about God s Word and worshipping God through music minutes. 1. Engage with the story and worship. Supervise students This week s story: Love one another John 13:34; 1 Samuel 20 (Supporting: 1 Samuel 18 19) SMALL GROUP Purpose: Small groups where the weekly lesson is unpacked and applied to daily life. 25 minutes
8 1. Clap-a-Word (Memory Verse Activity 5 minutes) Supplies: Bibles Look up Proverbs 17:17 in the Bible and then write it on the white board. Say the verse together a few times. Then have one volunteer leave the room (or turn his back). Have another volunteer point to one word from the verse so the others can see it. Then the first volunteer returns to the room, but is not allowed to see the verse displayed on the white board. The group says the verse, but claps on the selected word without saying it. The first volunteer says which word was skipped. If they get stumped, let them look at the verse display. Take turns clapping on various words. Finding verses with 2 nd and 3 rd graders: Guide them to open their Bibles to the front and find the table of contents. (Hold up a Bible opened to the table of contents to show the kids what the page looks like.) When the kids find the table of contents, lead them to find Proverbs in the list under Old Testament. When the kids find Proverbs, lead them to look at the page number beside the word. Explain that the number tells them on what page they can find Proverbs. Help the kids find the page. When they find Proverbs, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Help them find 2. Not So Secret Message (Application Activity 10 minutes) Supplies: Paper, writing utensils, Bible Read John 13:34 to the group. Remind your group that in our Bible story, Jonathan sent a message to David and showed love to David by helping him. Ask kids to think of a friend and write out a message promising to help that friend with something. They can choose any friend they want to help, and they can choose any task to help their friend with. Some suggestions: help with homework, help with chores, help by taking their lunch tray to the trash for them, help by giving them a gift, or help them specifically with something they re going through or struggling with. EXPLAIN that it is great to have feelings of love for our friends, but acting on those feelings especially helping a friend with something they need brings us even closer as friends. Loving a friend means you DO something for that friend. [Make It Personal] (Talk about a time you and a friend were brought closer together by one of you doing something for the other.) [Bottom Line] Friends love one another, so make sure you do that thing you wrote down! Prayer & Review Share praises and prayer request. Review the Bible verse and bottom line together, Friends love one another. AFTER CLASS 1. Set room up for next class (Clean up and set stations) am class, please clean up stations, place in bins and bring supplies to the collection bin at the CF Kids Desk. 3. Pass out Memory Verse Postcards to everyone.

For example: , = For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Use the SMS Page to decipher the code. See who can be the first table to decode the verse and write it correctly.
