1 The Husky Herald Antioch Elementary School December N. Main Street, Antioch, IL Phone: (847) Web Address: Dear Parents/Guardians, The holiday season is in full swing and the school year is almost half over. Can you believe that?!! This time of year is definitely busy for everyone, with family gatherings, shopping, and evening events of all types. Even with all of the different festivities occurring, it is important to take a step back and reflect on how the year has progressed. I normally take time to reflect every week, constantly striving to improve what I do, and the effectiveness of the school. At this mid-year point, here are a few of my takeaways. We have an incredible school culture. This is undeniable. I am sure your students have come home and talked about our community meetings, whether it be our student presentations, the awards their class received that week, or even in some cases my saxophone playing skills. These meetings are the foundation in which our caring and respectful school community is built. We have an incredible staff. This is not just referring to our teaching staff, but our building staff as a whole. Every staff member here contributes and ensures our students are safe and in an environment of high expectations. It is our custodian and student supervisors greeting the students as they exit the bus in the morning, to our kitchen staff providing excellent meals for our students to eat, and I can tell you school food has changed for the better since I was in school. Our Para-pros are beyond amazing; willing to do whatever they can both in and out of the classroom to ensure our students success. The office staff is the lifeblood of school operations and of course, our teaching staff is second to none, by far the best staff I have worked with. The students. Simply put, our students are showing real devotion to their educations. During parent teacher conferences, it was so nice to hear from our students themselves about what they are doing to achieve their goals. We are starting the journey towards implementing student lead conferences. This year we had at least one class in each grade level use this approach. Our students are taking ownership over their educations, setting goals, monitoring their progress, and celebrating success. It is exciting to imagine that this could be done building wide in the future, and how it will positively impact our students. You, the community. Since starting in July, it was evident that the community takes real pride in it s school. The level of support that we receive is greatly appreciated. Interactions between parents and staff are collaborative, showing that the education of our students is a team effort. AES would not be the successful school that it is without the community s backing and it s advocating for it s students. Thank you for your continued support. There are many ways to continue to be involved at AES ranging from volunteering in classrooms, to attending after school events, or attending a Community Meeting. Our 4 th graders will have their concert on December 7 th at 7pm. I wish all of you the happiest of holiday seasons and like always, remember, it is a great day to be a Husky! Sincerely, David Shepherd Principal

The goal of this new initiative is to decrease the amount of time your child is out of class, increasing success in the classroom and providing an ever improving, high standard of care. Teachers will be using technology to communicate with the Health Office. Your student will be seen and assessed individually in a timely manner. For non-emergent situations, the nurse may see the child and assess or provide treatment outside of the classroom if possible, thus trips to the office and missed class time will be reduced significantly. Any emergent/serious situations will be treated in the same manner as always, again with staff making certain the office is apprised of the situation ahead of time and the nurse responding accordingly. If you have any questions, please feel free to call. Wendy Lanahan, LPN Health AES (847)

4 Page 4 As most of you have heard by now, we finished reading Esperanza Rising. This case study took a look at human rights challenges experienced not only with the main character, but also in real lives of immigrants. In the Esperanza Rising unit, students wrote narratives based on select scenes from the novel, used primary source documents, and developed an understanding of their own human rights. Our next unit will be very different. This unit examines a graphic novel and it s text features. This novel connects to Project Lead the Way as it reinforces what they already know about the Scientific Method. This text also supports student understanding of how text structure and visual elements help readers build knowledge and understanding about more complex ideas. Later in the unit, students will be creating their own graphic style novelette! The Antioch Public Library has a collection of graphic novels. We encourage students to visit the library and check out a few! The fifth grade team is reinforcing the importance of math facts. In school, every student is working on fact fluency. Some are still working on mastering addition and subtraction facts, while others are progressing through multiplication and division. Our goal is that all students have mastered all operations by the end of the school year. In Eureka math, we are approximately in the middle of our second module, which focuses on decimal operations. In this module, students are asked to apply their knowledge of operations to many different real-life scenarios through word problems. Our next module teaches fraction operations. All students worked with fractions in fourth grade, but they may have forgotten some skills. We encourage them to spend some time on Khan Academy to review concepts in preparation for the upcoming module.

8 Page 8 Be Alert, so Kids don t get hurt To help ensure the safety of all our AES students, here is an important reminder regarding school bus safety. Flashing Red Lights on School Buses Mean STOP Illinois Law states: You must stop before meeting or overtaking a school bus loading or unloading passengers on a two-lane roadway. You must remain stopped until the stop signal arm is no longer extended and the flashing lights are turned off or the driver signals you to pass. Please inform your friends and neighbors. Some tickets have already been issued on Depot St. while buses at AES have been loading or unloading.
