1 COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: MATH CB Plane Trigonometry COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: Topics in trigonometric functions, identities, equations, applications, radian measure, graphs of Periodic functions and oblique triangle. Prerequisite: MATH 1314 Instructor: Charles Obare Office: W 355 Office Hours: MWF 10-11, TTH Office Telephone: (956) cobare@tstc.edu Mymatlab course ID : obare95104 MAJOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Solve problems involving the six trigonometric functions, and prove identities. 2. Solve problems involving right triangle trigonometry, applications, and vectors. 3. Solve problems relating to reference angles, radians and degrees, and circular functions. 4. Graph trigonometric functions and find inverse trigonometric functions. 5. Prove identities and solve problems involving sum and difference formulas, doubleangle formulas, and half-angle formulas. 6. Solve trigonometric equations. 7. Solve problems involving the law of sines and the law of cosines. In each unit you will be given a lecture/demonstration and then be expected to perform the assignments for each unit. Each assignment will be demonstrated and explained so that you can then attempt it. After each unit there will be a knowledge exam and a performance exam. Each exam is based on the information discussed during the lecture, the reading assignments and the lab assignments given.

Solve problems related to the rectangular coordinate system 3. Define the six trigonometric functions and solve related problems. 4. Solve problems using reciprocal, ratio and Pythagoras identities 5. Write any of the six trigonometric functions in terms of any of the others 6. Manipulating trigonometric expressions using algebraic techniques. B. Right Triangle Trigonometry (SCANS 6C) 1. Define the six trigonometric functions as the ratios of the sides in the right triangles and work related problems 2. Find approximations for trigonometric functions using a calculator 3. Solve right triangles 4. Solve application problems involving right triangles 5. Solve problems involving vectors using a geometric approach C. Radian Measure (SCAN 6) 1. Find exact values for trigonometric functions of angles outside the interval 0 using reference angles. 2. Convert degrees to radians, radians to degrees and solve related problems. 3. Graph trigonometric functions using phase shifts 4. Find an equation from its graph. 5. Graph Combinations of functions. 6. Evaluate inverse trigonometric functions. D. Graphing and Inverse Functions (SCANS 6C) 1. Graph the basic trigonometric functions. 2. Graph trigonometric functions using amplitude and period. 3. DEPARTMENTAL PARTICIPATION POLICY: Prior to this semester, students were recorded as No Shows if they had not attended class by the Official Record Date. No Shows receiving financial aid had this aid removed resulting in the student having to pay for their classes or they were deregistered from school. The recording of No Shows continues, but our policy requires that students attending class must be designated as Shows by the instructor and merely attending class will not accomplish that. The student will receive this designation based upon completion of academic work demonstrating the student s commitment to completing all the required coursework and passing the course. Examples include: 1) purchase of required textbook(s); 2) purchase of required materials (if needed other than textbook); 3) completion of homework assignment(s). Your instructor will designate the required assignments to be completed by the Official Record date which is Tuesday, January 22, 2013 for this course. Students in compliance with this policy will be labeled as Shows and those not complying may lose their financial aid for the course. During the course of the semester, students have three choices: (1) attend and participate, or (2) withdraw (student responsibility), or (3) get an F at the end of the course. If a student has 6 unexcused absences, the student is strongly advised to drop the course, or a grade of F may be issued at the end of the semester.
