CREATE YOUR OWN DYSTOPIAN SOCIETY RESEARCH & WRITING PROJECT FOR ANY DYSTOPIAN NOVEL!
Teacher Instructions Thank you for downloading my product! This is a high-interest research and informational text writing project that can work with any dystopian or utopian novel studied in your class. Works perfect for interdisciplinary teaching or connections with history/social studies class! This project has been aligned to 8th grade standards, but can work for multiple grade levels from 7th to 11th grade due to its ability to pair with any dystopian text (e.g., The Hunger Games, The Giver, Divergent, Brave New World, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, etc). Common Core aligned to the following standards:!! W8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration. W8.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. W8.5 - With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed. W8.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. W8.2a - Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. W8.2b - Develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples. W8.2c - Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts. W8.2d - Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic. W8.2e - Establish and maintain a formal style. W8.2f - Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented Erika Forth - For single classroom use only
Forms of Government Research Directions: Research the following forms of government below. In the boxes, write notes about the important principals and ideas behind each form of government in your own words. By the end of your research, choose which form of government you want to use to create your own society. You will be required to cite all research sources in a bibliography. Anarchy Democracy Communism Republic
Monarchy Socialism Oligarchy Totalitarianism/Fascism
Research Reflection Directions: Answer the following questions to reflect on your research. 1. Which form of government do you feel is most effective? Explain your answer, citing evidence from your research. 2. Which form of government do you feel is least effective? Explain your answer, citing evidence from your research. 3. If you could create your own society, which form of government would your society have? Why?
Bibliography Directions: Document each research source using proper citation format
Create Your Own Dystopia Essay Guidelines Imagine you have the power to create a brand new society dystopian or utopian. What would it be like? What would be its guiding principles? Your task is to create an original, creative society based on a researched form on government. You will write an informational essay describing your society, broken down into sections with appropriate headings and other informational text features. Even though your society is invented, you will be writing in the informational mode as if it were real, showing your ability to use informational text features, and appropriate details, examples, and explanation. Your society should also be research-based, and it should be clear what real type of government your society is based on. Project Requirements: Informational Essay Introduction In your introduction, you will draw the reader into your essay, give background information about, and write a thesis based on a motto that exemplifies the foundations of your society. Body Paragraphs Using logical organization and headings, describe your society and how its elements and government fits exemplifies the motto. Consider giving information on: government structure, setting, important figures, laws, economy, environment, education, classes, culture, problems, etc. Conclusion Develop a satisfying conclusion that summarizes the essay and restates the thesis. Graphics You will need to include two appropriate informational graphics about your society in your essay: map, chart, graph, illustration, diagram, etc. Propaganda Piece You will create a piece of persuasive propaganda that promotes your society or encourages conformation to the society s norms. It may be a poster, brochure, video, etc. Your final grade will be calculated according to a rubric.
Brainstorming Directions: Before you imagine the specifics of your own dystopian or society, use the web below to brainstorm potential ideas, situations, and problems for your society. Brainstorm as many as possible; you do not have to use these ideas in your project. Type of Government: Setting Economy Education My Dystopian Or Utopian Society (Circle one) Government Problems/ Challenges Culture
Prewriting Directions: You will now begin brainstorming to create your own dystopian or utopian society. Answer the following questions thoroughly to begin building your society. Name of Society: Location in World: Form of Government: Dystopian or Utopian? 1. Explain the background of how your society developed. How did your society come into existence? What events led to this society being created? 2. Create a motto for your society. This can be a slogan, phrase, or set of words that represents the foundation of life and what your citizens should live up to. For example, in Adolus Huxley s novel Brave New World, the society s slogan is Community. Stability. Identity. In George Orwell s 1984, the motto is War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength. 3. How does your above motto describe your society? Why did you pick those particular words?
4. Describe the setting of your society. Where in the world is it located? What does the city physically look like? Is it modern, or old fashioned? 5. What kind of people are valued in your society? What kind of people are not valued? Are there specific roles or classes they must conform to? 6. What will daily life be like for your society s residents? 7. What kinds of challenges does your society face?
Create Your Own Dystopia Outline Directions: Now that you have a general knowledge of the foundations of your society, you will begin outlining your informational essay. You may bullet point what you will discuss in each section. Title of Essay: I. Introduction i. Attention grabber: ii. iii. iv. Background detail: Background detail: Background detail: v. Thesis: II.
