2 LEADERSHIP Social Studies Leadership Forums Our Social Studies Leadership Forums are designed to help keep Social Studies Directors, Coordinators, and Specialists updated on key terms, and provide a venue to network and have critical conversations. These meetings provide updates from the Texas Education Agency, Texas Social Studies Supervisors Association, Texas Council for Social Studies and upcoming trainings and events. Join us! Critical Success Factors 1, 2, 3 & 7 September 13, 2017 Session ID # October 25, 2017 Session ID # February 7, 2018 Session ID # April 11, 2018 Session ID # TTESS Leadership Series: Social Studies Coaching to Move Teachers from Proficient to Accomplished This series supports district and campus leaders with coaching Social Studies teachers in effective instructional practices using the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (TTESS). Leaders will learn how to develop teachers and support them in their work to provide effective instruction that will lead to improved student achievement. This session targets the Texas Education Agency s Strategic Goal #1, Recruiting, Supporting, and Retaining Teachers and Principals. This series will provide administrator instructional coaching techniques focused on social studies content that will result in effective feedback and support using the data collected in learning walks. This cohort is ONLY Available to Social Studies District Directors, Coordinators, and Administrators. We will study the TTESS Rubric in the domains of Standards & Alignment, Data & Assessment, Activities/ Classroom Culture, Achieving Expectations & Communication, Monitor & Adjust, and close the year with a Reflection and steps to move forward. Participants must attend all training dates and cannot send substitutes or stand-ins for the sessions. This series is planned as a 3 hour session 9 a.m. 12 pm. required attendance. Support for implementation is available 1 4p.m. but not required. This group serves in an advisory capacity providing guidance on meeting districts needs and assists in building capacity in our region. Committee members will serve two years. 3 From TEKS to Text: Using Books to Support Social Studies and ELAR Content, Grades 3 5 Get the most bang for your book! This session will offer teachers the opportunity to consider the value of text selection to drive classroom instruction across Grades 3 5 curriculum. Participants will experience ELAR and Social Studies integration in a variety of instructional models, including an emphasis on Figure 19 and 29B comprehension skills. October 11, 2017 Session ID # Fee: $125 May 22, 2018 Session ID # Fee: $125 Dashing Through the Snow STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. STEAM Education provides the framework used for connecting the growing network of educational disciplines, businesses and communities to create adaptable citizen-involved, globally-responsible, reality-based programs for developing for life-long FUNctional literacy for all. In this session grades 3-5 will utilize Dash and their geographic tools to travel the world by using their map skills to design their route and write a story about their adventure. November 28, 2017 Session ID # Fee: $125 TCMPC ELAR Learning Series K-2 Dive into designing effective instruction with the Instructional Focus Document (IFD) in this engaging professional development with gradelevel content support. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to use the IFD and its components to plan for each unit of study at the depth and specificity of their grade-level TEKS. Throughout the series, educational specialists from science, math, and social studies will join us to simultaneously support our students literacy and content success! 4 4 7: Texas Strengthening Social Studies 4th & 7th Grade Alignment Through Deep TEKS Exploration and Writing This is open to TEKS RESOURCE SYSTEM Districts interested in Strengthening the 4th and 7th grade Social Studies alignment of standards by joining our Social Studies cohort for the school year. This cohort will require a commitment of five professional development days throughout the year and the commitment of vertical feeder patterns between 4th and 7th grade teachers. In the five professional development days we will front-load teaching strategies with a focus on literacy in the Social Studies classroom aligned to the content, context, and cognitive demand (rigor) of the TEKS for each unit in the TEKS Resource System. We will focus work on connecting instruction between 4th and 7th grade teachers to build capacity and close instructional gaps between the grade levels. Teachers will also have the opportunity to network across the region with other teachers. *Charged technology and instructional materials will be required for each session. Let s get this one done! Participants will explore activities and resources to assist with targeting the tough TEKS in Grade 8 American History while incorporating the process skills. Participants will walk with a variety of strategies to use to enhance rigor and engage students in American History content. 5 Teaching the Tough 11th Grade TEKS In this two-day, 12-hour institute, the Law-Related Education (LRE) team identified TEKS that are challenging to American History students such as Gilded and Progressive Era, New Deal, Cold War, and Civil Rights. Working with scholars and consultants, participants will learn and receive valuable methods and resources. Content presentations are reinforced with practical activities which will be made available to participants on a flash drive. This institute is designed to target low performing 11th grade TEKS and to complement existing curriculum. Lunch will be provided. Critical Success Factors 1,2,4, & 7 T-TESS Domains: Planning, Instruction, Learning Environment, and Professional Practices and October 30 31, 2017 Session ID # Fee: $50 Civil Discourse We want inquisitive students however, some questions are becoming difficult to answer. Explore a model to help students find authoritative text evidence to pose and answer questions in the vast world of digital information. Facilitate conversations on complex topics with multiple viewpoints encouraging historical and civic inquiry using valid sources. You may already have access to resources to help navigate social studies issues. Have civil discourse and make reading, debating, and primary sources the perfect recipe for deep learning and fun! TexQuest, online resources for K-12 public and open enrollment charter school communities, is partially funded by the Texas State Legislature. Check with your district to see if you have access to these resources. Please bring your own laptop and charging cord. Geography Program This yearlong program supports geography s big ideas and practices within contemporary geography. Participants will explore the themes of population, human-environment interaction, culture, economics, and physical systems. Instructors will model the use of geographic tools to study geographic phenomena and provide teachers with the opportunity to do geography and explore concepts globally and locally. Sessions will highlight instructional strategies and resources to help participants understand how to support geographic learning in their classroom. Join us in this yearlong adventure with our partner Texas State s Texas Alliance for Geographic Education (TAGE). This program provides you 5 days of professional development by university professors, the book Teaching Geography, access to a T.A.G.E. training at Texas State, and time to design lessons with colleagues facilitated by our Social Studies specialist. Secondary Social Studies educators will understand the components of the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System, or TELPAS. Participants will dive into activities integrating Social Studies content and writing and will understand the need for consistent application of writing in the content areas to increase English learners acquisition of English in all four of the language domains. This training offers specific strategies for Social Studies teachers to use in meeting the linguistic, cognitive, and effective needs of English Language Learners; thus, resulting in an increased comprehension of Social Studies content. SMU s O Neil Center developed the Teaching Free Enterprise program to help Texas school teachers develop the knowledge and expertise they need to meet the Texas Economics TEKS regarding Free Enterprise in classroom instruction. Top professors and researchers from Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech and the UT System, are providing lessons, activities and exercises that can be readily implemented in the classroom.
