Analyzes architectural trends, workflow redesign, and implementation strategies. Attention is given to life cycle management strategies for health information systems. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Determines requirements to design an electronic medical record application. Develops design enhancements to support required extended functionalities. Research and review data exchange requirements to integrate healthcare information system modules. Demonstrates use of healthcare IT standards knowledge in design, development and implementation Explains effectively the required redesign in healthcare workflows to ensure successful implementation of health care information systems. Evaluate the effectiveness of problem resolution and support systems security and privacy standards in health care information systems. Articulate the issues to interact with the vendors as needed to rectify problems that occur during the deployment process No textbook is required. Required materials will be provided in class. Laptop Devices: This is a technology course and we will use electronic devices. Students need to be equipped with Laptops in order to work on practical exercises in classroom. The computers need to be running Windows 7 or later, have MS office 2010 or later, and be capable of running virtual machines. The

2 Teaching Methods: Evaluation and Grading minimum configuration is 4GB or RAM or more, 2-core processor, and at least 100GB of free space. It is recommended to have 8GM RAM. Please contact the instructor for details. Note that it is possible to run Windows on Apple computers using Boot Camp or preferably with virtualization software such as Parallels, VMWare, or VirtualBox. If you do not have a suitable computer, you can access one of computer labs at GMU campus. You can also get access to Health Informatics Learning Lab. Partial List of Software that will be used in Class - MS SQL Server 2014 (can be downloaded from DreamSpark*) - MS Office 2010 or later (student/home edition is sufficient, needs to be purchased). Office 2013 will be used to in class. - VistA EMR system** - OpenEMR** - Weka** - MUMPS** - Virtualization software such as VMWare, VirtualBox that allow to set up a guest Windows operating system - Additional software may be discussed in the class and provided (*) HAP department holds license to Microsoft software for education purposes e111-a703-f04da23e67f6&JSEnabled=1 (**) will be provided in class, but is freely downloadable if you want to try before assigned in class The course combines lectures with learning practical data skills, but the focus will be on developing programming skills. Before registering for this class, students are expected to complete HAP 700 and HAP 709 we will use technical skills obtained in the earlier courses. Most of weekly assignments, and the final project will require demonstration practical skills. Students will query databases, integrate data/systems, and build technology solutions. Each week reading material will be assigned and discussed in the following week. Expectations: Students are responsible for assigned readings, class content and material. You are expected to arrive to class on time, stay for the duration of the class, and contribute actively. Students are responsible for checking GMU daily, including SPAM/JUNK folders. Comments and additional materials are distributed through . Clean your mailbox weekly so it is not over quota even if you forward s. Participation is key to making the experience of everyone a pleasant one. It means that you need to actively participate in classes and complete all exercises provided on a timely basis (every Sunday following the class), ask questions about the topic, be involved in class discussions, etc. Final project is a semester-long effort that should be done individually. At the end of semester, students should submit final project report and prepare presentation. Details about the projects and sample topics will be provided.

3 While it is possible to build upon existing projects, for example from HAP 709 course, the work must go substantially beyond it. It is not sufficient to build a database in Access. The project MUST include things covered in this course (i.e., decision support). The project deliverables are: final project, project presentation, and the actual product. Each student is required to prepare and narrate one selected topic in the Teach One assignment (independent from project presentation). The presentation is for about 10 minutes and should be related to the class and upload to or similar. Late submissions of may be penalized up to 20%. Do not copy-and-paste, do not use responses from other students or own responses from other courses. All assignments and projects are checked for plagiarism using SafeAssign. Plagiarism will be reported and handled according to GMU policies. Grading Scale: Final grade is calculated based on percentages provided below. If at any time during the semester you are not aware of your partial grades, contact your instructor. The process is transparent, and the calculation is done using the formula. The assignment questions are for information purposes only. Complete questions and instructions will be provided weekly. The schedule is subject to change. Week Date: Topic/ 1/2 1/26 Introduction to Health Information Systems: - Review of Set Theory and Logic - Database review Feb 2 1. Download and install virtualization software (VirtualBox, VMWare Player/Fusion, Parellels...). Get a copy of an operating system from MSDN (i.e. Windows 10), or Linux (i.e., Ubuntu, or CentOS), or something else. Try to configure a virtual machine and install the guest operating system. Note: In class we will be mostly using VirtualBox, but you can use any other virtualization solution. 2. Install MS SQL: DreamSpark (with Microsoft software) library is available at: e111-a703-f04da23e67f6&JSEnabled=1 Click on start shopping. Then use your GMU to register (without masonlive, i.e. jwojtusi@gmu.edu). Software is FREE, so do not pay for anything is it asks you to. Do not use your GMU password. ONLY Microsoft software is available on this site. 3/4 2/9 Electronic Medical Records Feb Download and Install OpenEMR (you can download a virtual machine with already installed and configured system or perform complete installation on your computer). Program is available at Insert data for 4-5 patients, including notes, visits, etc. (include screenshots when submitting assignment). Export the inserted patient data and open it in Excel.

5 2. Import the data provided on Blackboard in SQL Server. Do preliminary analysis on the data set in SQL (frequency, average, standard deviation, median).
