1 INSIGHT TUITION 2016 ENGLISH WINTER HOLIDAY COURSE OUTLINE REGISTER AT info@insighttuition.com.au DATE: SEPTEMBER 3 RD AND 4 TH OR 12 TH AND 13 TH About the course This course is specifically designed to provide students with an insightful understanding of the concepts and analytical process required for English HSC course. The outline below is a guide for what will happen during the intensive course. The aim of this course is for student s to develop conceptual strategies for approaching the HSC exam, in - depth knowledge and understanding of all syllabus dot points and outcomes for each module and the ability to compose evaluative and analytical essays. Note: It is recommended that students come prepared with a draft of their essays and discovery creative writing as advice/ marking will be provided throughout the course. Day 1 Area of Focus Lesson Structure (3 hours) Paper 1: AOS Discovery Introduction - Course structure - Examination Section 1: Unseen texts - Area of Study Brief explanation of HSC mark calculations and marking procedures. Outline of the English course, exam techniques and tips to securing a band 6. Section 1: Approach - Reading time, structuring the response, examples of specific approaches) - Deconstructing Band 6 Detailed explanation of recommended writing style, exam techniques and synthesis in response to short answer questions

2 Section 2: Creative Writing Mock Comprehension style exam: explanation of technical analysis, how to extend your skill in literary analysis and list of techniques issued. In-class section one exam Introduction to creative section Explanation of marking criteria and comments from the marking centre Guideline Writing workshop: grammar, punctuation, syntax, vocabulary, expression, nuance of meaning, stylistic flair, originality Deconstruction of band 6 creative writing. - Intensive drafting and editing of student - Adapting and integrating the stimulus - Feedback

3 Section 3: Discovery Essay Explanation and deconstruction of provided discovery thesis, central ideas and arguments Explanation of marking criteria and comments from the marking centre Answering/ approach to the question Deconstruction of band 6 Discovery essay - Intensive drafting and editing of student - Adapting integrating the stimulus - Feedback
