1 Guide to Controlled Assessment Year /18 1

2 CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT In many subjects, students can gain a proportion of their final grade by completing Controlled Assessment assignments in class. The proportion of the final grade that Controlled Assessments contribute to varies from subject to subject. This booklet is intended as a guide to help students and parents understand how controlled assessments contribute to the final grades in each subject. Marcus Chapman Deputy Headteacher 2

3 PLAGIARISM - this means copying someone else's work and presenting it as your own. The examining boards have issued the following: 1. The work which you submit for assessment must be your own. However you may a) quote from books or any other sources: if you do, you must state which ones you have used; b) receive guidance from someone other than your teacher: if so you should discuss the nature of this assistance with your teacher before you receive the help. 2. If you copy from someone else or allow another to copy from you, or if you cheat in any other way, you may be disqualified from at least the subject concerned. 3. When you hand in your coursework for assessment, you may be required to sign that you have understood and followed the coursework requirements for the subject. Controlled Assessment Catch-up If your child is absent or ill during a controlled assessment period, their subject teacher will ensure there are appropriate catch up opportunities. CTLs often support these with lunchtime or afterschool sessions in CA conditions. Please encourage your child to liaise with their teacher and the Curriculum team leader as well as their Year Learning Manager upon their return to school. 3

4 Fine Art/Photography/Textiles SUBJECT DETAILS Component 1 Portfolio This is the coursework unit, which is a controlled assessment, worth 60% of the final grade. The portfolio must include both a sustained project and a selection of further work. The coursework is completed in lessons and for homework from the beginning of Year 10 up to the externally set task in Year 11. Component 2 Externally set assignment The students receive their exam paper in January of Year 11. It is marked by the school and moderated by the exam board. There is unlimited preparation time for the 10 hour exam, which is worth 40% of the final grade. Business Studies - NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Business and Enterprise (601/0048/5) Year 10 V.Cert The course consists of 4 assessments; students must pass all four assessments to achieve an overall grade for this qualification. Unit 1 Internally assessed through assignments based on course criteria Unit 2 Externally assessed Unit 3 Internally assessed through assignments based on course criteria Unit 4 Internally assessed based on the participation and evaluation of a business or enterprise project. Product Design & Resistant Materials Coursework counts as 50% of the. It starts in Year 10 and ends around February/March of Year 11. It consists of one completed project folio and there is a structured plan of action throughout the year. Coursework is done during lessons and for homework. An exam in the summer of Yr11 counts as the remaining 50%. Food Preparation and Nutrition Coursework counts as 50% of the course. During year 10, students will make connections between theory and practice to apply their understanding of food and nutrition to practical preparation. In Year 11, students will undertake two non- 4

5 examined tasks. Task 1 - Food Investigation. Task 2 - Food Preparation Assessment (which will include a three-hour practical assessment). WJEC Eduqas Drama There are 3 components for this course. Component 1- Devising Theatre- 40% - internally examined an externally moderated. Learners create a piece of theatre using the techniques of an influential practitioner, in response to an externally set stimulus. They must produce:- A finished performance A 900 word process log An evaluation of their final piece. Component 2- Performing from a text - 20% - Externally assessed by an examiner Learners study two extracts from a text. They create a performance from these extracts and perform it in front of an external examiner. Component 3- Interpreting Theatre- 40% - Written exam 1 hour and 30 minutes Section A- Set text- a series of questions on DNA by Dennis Kelly Section B- Live theatre review English All students will take two s: English Language and English Literature. We will be using the specifications for both subjects. All exams are at the end of Year 11. There are not any controlled assessments. English Language 100% of the final grade is awarded based on two examinations. Both exam papers have a reading section based on unseen texts followed by a writing task. English Literature 100% of the final grade is awarded based on two examinations. Paper 1 covers a Shakespeare play ( Macbeth ) and a 19 th Century novel. Paper 2 covers a modern novel and /or a play, a poetry section using poems studied in class, and a third section on unseen poetry. 5

6 OCR Geography Geography no longer has a Controlled Assessment element. It is all assessed in exams. History History no longer has a Controlled Assessment element. It is all assessed in exams. OCR Cambridge Nationals in ICT The OCR Cambridge National in ICT qualification is a practical skills based qualification that aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding to allow them to become confident users of ICT. The qualification is comprised of four units and is assessed through a mixture of formal examination and coursework portfolios. The four units are: Unit 1: Understanding computer systems. This core unit provides students with the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to use computer systems effectively. This unit is assessed through an external examination (25%). Unit 2: ICT for Business. This unit complements unit Unit 1. In this unit students will work with office applications software to edit and format/create content to meet specified business purposes. This unit is assessed through a coursework portfolio based on an exam board set scenario (25%). Unit 4: Databases. Database software is one of the most important IT applications programs used by organisations in the 21 st Century. Databases are used to store and organise data so that it is easy to find the data again when an organisation or individual wants to do something with the data. On completion of this unit learners will be able to modify an existing database and produce a relational database. They will also be able to create queries to interrogate a database and find specific records and produce reports based on the results of these queries and create a user interface for the database. This unit is assessed through a coursework portfolio based upon an exam board set scenario (25%) Unit 6: Computer based images. This unit will enable learners to acquire the underpinning knowledge and skills to enable them to create, edit, enhance and save 6

7 different types of digital images. This unit is assessed through a coursework portfolio based on an exam board set scenario (25%). Students will receive a qualification that is graded Pass Merit or Distinction at either level 1 or 2. This is equivalent to a single at grades A* to F Edexcel Maths Maths does not have a Controlled Assessment element. It is all assessed in exams. Languages Languages no longer has a Controlled Assessment element. It is all assessed in exams. Media Studies Course Content and Assessments: 70% exam and 30% non-exam assessment: Paper 1: Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes 84 marks 35% of + Paper 2: Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes 84 marks 35% of + Non exam assessment creating a media product A choice of topics related to the over-arching (annually changing) theme 72 marks 30% of Assessed by teachers Moderated by Students produce: a statement of intent a media product for an intended audience RSL Music Performance This course is 100% coursework but 60% is assessed internally and 40% is assessed externally 7

8 Coursework Tasks: Unit 208 (30% - internally assessed) Music Style Development researching a music style and creating a detailed presentation about the development of the style with six chosen recordings. Unit 221 (30% - internally assessed) Organising a Music Event - planning an event from the beginning to end. A report will be completed afterwards which will detail the success of the event and any improvements that need to be made. Unit 230 (40% -externally assessed) Live Music Performance this will be a live performance which can include one or more pieces of music. It will be completed in a certain time period determined by the exam board and will need to be in front of a small audience. RSL Music Technology Unit 208 (30% - internally assessed) Music Style Development researching a music style and creating a detailed presentation about the development of the style with six chosen recordings. Unit 228 (30% - internally assessed) Using a Keyboard with a DAW this involves completing a project on Logic Pro X software. Unit 223 (40% - externally assessed) Live Sound Recording - this will be a live recording which can include one or more pieces of music. It will be completed in a certain time period determined by the exam board. OCR Physical Education There are two 1 hour written papers worth 60% of the final grade. Component 01 Physical factors affecting performance Component 02 Socio-cultural issues and sports psychology Component 03 - Non-exam assessment (NEA) This is worth 40% of the final grade. There are two parts to this: 1. Practical Assessments (from a very wide range of activities) are made in 3 activities by the end of March in Year 11. These have to be chosen from the list on the OCR PE 1-9 website (Guide to Controlled Assessment). Students must have at least one team activity and one individual activity. 8

9 2. Analysing and Evaluating Performance (AEP). This is a task-based NEA. Students are required to demonstrate their ability to analyse and evaluate their own personal performance or that of a peer in order to: Analyse aspects of personal performance in a practical activity. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the performance. Produce an action plan which aims to improve the quality and effectiveness of the performance. The overall time allowed for learners to complete the task must not exceed 14 hours (not including the task introduction). Lesson element Task introduction. Fitness assessment of the performer to identify strengths and weaknesses. Analysis of results. Movement analysis of a chosen skill Suggested Time allowed 1 hour 2-3 hours 3-4 hours 1-2 hours Creation of action plan 4-5 hours Level 2 OCR Cambridge Nationals in Sports Science Applying Principles of Training RO42. Worth 60 marks out of 240. Internal assessment. 10 hours to complete 4 written tasks with a practical element too 1. The Principles of Training 2. Training methods 3. Fitness Tests 4. Design a fitness training programme All work needs to be suitably referenced. Sociology 'Sociology of Beliefs' (including Religious Studies, PSHE Ed and Citizenship) is assessed by 100% external examination. Science Science no longer has a Controlled Assessment element. It is all assessed in exams. 9

10 Deadlines In all courses it is essential that students manage their time so that all internal deadlines are met. 10
