3 SCINC DPARTMNT Appointment of Teacher of Biology for September 2018 The Science Department at Caerleon is a very well established and highly successful team presently consisting of fourteen full time teachers. We are ably assisted by three laboratory technicians. KY STAG 3 Science is taught as the separate subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in 3 x 1 hour periods per week to all students from Years 7-9, including a small number of those students with Additional Learning Needs. In Year 7, students are taught in mixed ability classes. Timetabling allows for one small teaching group of students with Additional ducational Needs. In Years 8 and 9, classes are structured in sets. Additional needs groups continue as in year 7. The Key Stage 3 National Curriculum is delivered via a scheme of work devised within the science department. We feel that this provides the flexibility to meet the varying needs of students and to take advantage of new ideas and teaching materials. KY STAG 4 A system of options at the end of Year 9 allows students to choose from the following WJC options: GCS Biology, Chemistry and Physics as a suite of three separate sciences Or GCS Science Double Award Or GCS Applied Science Single Award KY STAG 5 Biology is an extremely popular subject with many pupils studying the subject at AS and A2 Level. The WJC specification is followed. Practical work is regarded as a very important aspect of the course. Resources There are nine science laboratories in two separate buildings, three of these are specialist Biology laboratories. The laboratories are fully equipped for practical work. Big screen projectors, laptop computers, television, video and OHP are available for use in all the laboratories. Additional Information The department meets formally on a regular basis but there is ample opportunity for informal discussion and exchange of ideas. ach member of the department is encouraged to assume responsibility for a specific aspect of the work of the department and this provides an important opportunity for continued professional development. Requirements We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic person who can work both as part of a team and independently. The ability to teach Biology to Key Stage 3 and 4 is required. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute fully as a member of the Biology department.

Reflects the conditions of employment of schoolteachers in carrying out their professional duties as set out within the framework of the current School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD). 2. Will be reviewed annually and it may be subject to modification at any time after consultation with post holders. Key Results Areas Strategic Responsibilities To assist in the promotion of a culture of professional reflective practice, in which teaching and learning is emphasised as the core function and underpinned by high expectations. Recognise that an up-to-date knowledge subject, pedagogy, classroom management and research/inspection findings is paramount for successful learning. To assist in establishing a clear shared understanding of the importance and role of the subject in contributing to students' spiritual, moral, social cultural, and physical development. To contribute to the school's strategic planning. To play a full part in the life of the school community, encourage extra-curricular activities, support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage and ensure students follow this example. To support the school in meeting its legal requirements for worship. To be a role model for students through personal presentation and professional conduct.
5 Management of Teaching and Learning To teach students, according to their educational needs. To plan and prepare lessons which are appropriate, suitably differentiated and challenging for students of all abilities. Monitor teaching and learning and the work and assessment, including external examinations of students. Regular setting and correction of both class and home-learning as set out in the school s policy. To assist in ensuring the effective development of students' literacy, numeracy and ICT skills through the subject. To assist in ensuring effective development of students' individual and collaborative study skills necessary to become increasingly independent in their work. To assist in implementing agreed school policies and practices for assessing, recording and reporting on student achievement. Communicate and consult with parents for the purpose of enhancing achievement. Provide guidance and advice to students on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers. Management of Students To act as a Form Tutor and as such to promote the general progress and well being of all the students in the form group. Register students, accompany them to assemblies and encourage their participation in all aspects of school life. Supervise students, where activities are being performed before, or after school. Communicate as appropriate with persons or bodies concerned with the welfare of individual students, after consultation with the Head of Department, Head of Year or Assistant Headteacher. Contribute fully in the work of the Department, Year and PS teams. Keep an accurate student attendance register, including that of punctuality, for each lesson. Unexplained absences or patterns of absence should be followed up immediately in accordance with school policy. Participate in the school s policies relating to Performance Management and Staff development. Management of Resources nsure that rooms used for teaching their subject are a stimulus to students' work particularly by providing suitable and changing displays, especially of students' work. nsure there is a safe working and learning environment in which risks are properly assessed, in conjunction with the Head of Department. nsure that learning resources and equipment are utilised appropriately. Management of Policy To take part as appropriate in the formulation of whole-school policies. Work with the Learning Support team and to ensure students additional educational needs are met. Contribute to the implementation of IPs as outlined in the current Code of Practice. To assist in using national, local and school benchmark data to assist the process of setting
6 challenging targets for individual students, where appropriate, at the three Key Stages and help identify students who are underachieving in the subject and, where necessary, create and implement effective plans of action to support those students. To contribute to the supervision and, as far is practicable, teach students whose teachers are not available to teach them. To participate in meetings of both academic and pastoral meetings and attend relevant functions as calendared. To review their own work, including student outcomes at the relevant Key Stages Disclosure and Barring Service This post will result in you having contact with children, the elderly, sick or disabled.
