2 The Man Who Made Puppets by Spencer Thomas Build Background Read the title to the children and talk with them about what they see in the cover photograph. Encourage children to use their knowledge of puppets and Sesame Street characters to think about the book. Ask questions such as the following: Why do you like playing with puppets? Who is your favorite Sesame Street character? Why? Front-Load Vocabulary Some everyday words may be unfamiliar to English learners. Before reading, check understanding of the following words: draw, pictures, paint, puppets, sing, dance, smiled. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Call their attention to any labels. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book talks about Jim Henson, the man who made the Sesame Street puppets. Explain that some of the pictures in this book have labels to name people and things. Suggested language: Turn to page 2. You can see Jim Henson in the photo. What is he doing? Do you know the name of the frog puppet? Page 3: Turn to page 3. Jim was an artist. He liked to draw and paint pictures. Say the word draw. What letter do you expect to see at the beginning of draw? Find the word draw on the page and point to it. Now say pictures. What letter sound do you hear at the beginning of the word pictures? Point to the word pictures on page 3. If you read the label in the picture you ll fi nd out something else Jim liked to make. That s right. Jim liked to make puppets. Cultural Support: Different kinds of puppets are made all around the world. Invite children to describe puppets they are most familiar with. Page 4: Look at the two pictures on this page. What do you see? Read the labels with me. Jim cut up his mom s green coat and turned it into a puppet. What kind of puppet did Jim make? What color is it? Now turn back to the beginning and read to fi nd how Jim Henson made some of your favorite puppets. Words to Know draw green like pictures sing small 2 Lesson 9: The Man Who Made Puppets

3 Read As the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem-solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book and what they found most interesting. Suggested language: What do you think about the puppets that Jim Henson made? Why do you feel this way? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points. Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Jim Henson made lots of different puppets. People helped Jim Henson make his puppets. Making art is a wonderful thing to do. Jim Henson s puppets make kids happy. The writer uses different language on each page to make the story interesting. The photos show what the writer is describing Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Choices for Support Fluency Have children read a passage from the text and demonstrate that they can quickly and automatically solve most words in a way that supports fluency. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Listening Game Materials: pairs of words. Have children listen for words that begin with the same sound. Have them raise their hands if the words begin with the same sound, and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning letter is different. Say pairs of words, such as the following: puppet, pet; bear, bend; made, run; big, sad. Build Sentences List these high-frequency words from the book: He, made, liked, a, big, small. Make a separate list of these story words: coat, frog, puppets, art, pig, bear, dog. Have children say sentences using the high-frequency words and one of the story words. Have them choose one sentence to write and illustrate. 3 Lesson 9: The Man Who Made Puppets

4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on BLM 9.9 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension on Skill Text and Graphic Features Tell children that words and pictures work together in a book to help readers better understand the text. Model how to think about the way that words and pictures work together: Think Aloud This book tells how Jim Henson made lots of different puppets that kids love. On page 6, I read about the big puppets he made. And there s a photo of one of these puppets standing next to Jim Henson. Is the puppet bigger or smaller than Jim? This photo really helps me understand just how big some of the puppets are. Practice the Skill Have children share an example of photos in other books that show what the author s words are describing. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture of a puppet that you would like to make. Write about your puppet. 4 Lesson 9: The Man Who Made Puppets

5 Read directions to children. English Language Learners Cultural Support Point out that the puppets made by Jim Henson and his helpers are known to children in countries all over the world. Children see many of these puppets, sometimes called Muppets, on a television show called Sesame Street. They can also read books about these characters.
