3 Take Your Placement Test Seriously! The test will determine which Math and English courses may enroll in. If you are placed into a class that is lower than your actual ability level, you could waste money and time on extra classes that may not count towards your degree or certificate. Studying and doing your best will help place you into classes that are at the correct level for you to be successful. To help you get ready and see the kinds of questions you can expect, there are free study guides available on the college s assessment webpage.

4 Please inform our Assessment Center or Enrollment Services Staff before testing if you have passed any of the following: Advanced Placement Program (AP) exam Received a score of a 3, 4 or 5 in Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, and/or Calculus College Level Examination Program (CLEP) for College Algebra Early Assessment Program (EAP) Placed at College Ready on the EAP portion of the 11th grade California Standards Test STAR exam (valid for one year after graduation) 10/10

6 If it has been a while since your last Math and/or English class, then it is highly recommended that you review the online assessment study guides before taking the assessment. If you are not prepared to do your best today, consider testing on a different day.

7 This assessment will determine your initial course placements in: Math 055 [ 090 [ 096 [ [ English 092 [ 101 [ 098 [ College Level (on average a course is 18 weeks long) If you are placed in Math 055 it may take you 1 to 1.5 years of extra course work to reach the associate or transfer level courses. The better you do on the test, the less courses you may need to complete in the long run, which could save you time and money.

8 At MSJC we use the Accuplacer assessment to measure your current skill level in English, Reading and Mathematics. Accuplacer assists in course placement, placing you in courses where you will have the best opportunity for success. Assessment is offered for the purpose of increasing your success at MSJC.

9 The Accuplacer assessment is separated into 3-sections: Mathematics Section Arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages. (17 questions) Algebra: algebraic expressions, graphs, factoring, and ratios. (12 questions) College level math covers trigonometry and calculus. (20 questions) Reading Comprehension Section read a passage and answer questions about the passage (20 questions) Sentence Skills Section rearrange sentences to make them grammatically correct (20 questions)

10 Accuplacer is an adaptive" assessment. It adapts to how well you do on each question. For example, the computer will start out with a medium to difficult question. Answer the question correctly and you will get a more difficult question. Answer incorrectly and you will receive an easier question. You will advance through the test in this manner.

11 In addition to assessing your English, Reading and Mathematics skills, other sources of information are used for placement purposes; Multiple Measures incorporates your background information for use in the placement process Questions about your background will include information about your future plans, high school grades, work schedule, etc. Please answer these questions as accurately as possible as they will determine your starting mathematics session in the assessment. Your answers may also impact your course placement.

12 The test questions are multiple choice. Take your time and do your best on all the sections. Do not rapidly click through the questions, as the result may impact your placement negatively.

13 The assessment test does not have a time limit. Average test time is about 1.5 hours but could take up to 3 hours. If you need to leave for any reason before you finish your test, you have 14 days to come back and complete your testing.

14 You can change your answer before moving on to the next question, but you cannot leave a question blank or come back to the question later. If you do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate one or more of the options. Then pick from the remaining choices.

15 You have been given two sheets of scratch paper. You are not permitted to use personal calculators for this test. When you receive a question and a calculator icon appears, you are permitted to use the on screen calculator, just click on the icon. This icon will appear at the top right of your testing screen

19 All students using the assessment centers are expected to follow these rules: Turn off all electronic devices, NOW. If you need to use the restroom do it now. If for any reason you need to leave the assessment room please notify Assessment Technician. Watches must be removed and stored away Do not talk with other students taking the assessment. No food or liquids. Children are not allowed inside the assessment center. Individuals not taking the assessment must wait outside.

23 Please tell the Assessment Technician if: You are here to take only one section, Mathematics only or English only, or you may end up taking more than one test. However, high school students are required to take all 3 sections of the test. You are in need of disability related accommodations in order to be assessed or received an IEP in High School outlining your disability related accommodations, then please inform the assessment technician. You are here to take English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. CELSA (Combined English Language Skills Assessment) is used for placement into ESL courses for both credit or Non-credit Program English and Reading courses. (CELSA is available at the Menifee Valley Campus, San Jacinto Campus, Temecula Education Complex and San Gorgonio Pass Campus)
