2 What is ALICE Training? ALICE is an acronym for a method to respond to a violent intruder situation. ALICE training will help all of us to be prepared if there were ever a dangerous situation. ALICE training provides options to respond to a violent intruder situation.
3 What is a Violent Intruder? A violent intruder is any person with the means (weapons, explosive devices, incendiary devices, etc.), opportunity (students and staff) and intent to inflict serious physical injury or death to others.
4 Why is ALICE Training Important? It is important to have several options to respond to a violent intruder situation. Preparation, training and practice are crucial. It minimizes the number of casualties while law enforcement is responding to the scene. These skills are transferrable to other situations such as the mall, church, theater, college, military, workplace, etc. It is supported by local, state and federal organizations.
5 Why is it Necessary to be Prepared? On average, it takes five to six minutes for law enforcement to respond to the scene. Being prepared helps keep casualties and injuries to a minimum while law enforcement is responding to end the event.

8 PREPARATION We need to ask ourselves, What if... questions. Preparation, training and practice are crucial. Traditional responses to a violent intruder at a school has been a typical lockdown. There needs to be more options for staff and students to respond.

10 ALICE EVERYONE is authorized to Alert if they determine there is a violent situation/intruder. NOTE: ALICE is an acronym to help remember the options. There is no order to what you do after the Alert.
11 Alert What did you see, hear, smell, feel? Communicate in plain language. Yell, call on phone, use the intercom, text to let people know there is danger. Next, choose the best action: Lockdown (enhanced), Evacuate, Inform or Counter. Call 911 when safe.
12 Inform When safe, communicate greater detail. Call 911. Communicate via phone, intercom and/or mobile technology. Note the following: location, description, identity, weapons, etc. (Example: A person wearing a black ski mask with a black jacket and a weapon is walking west on 1 st floor). Communicate real time information on intruder s location. This information will help others to know what to do and will provide valuable information to law enforcement.
13 Options You will need to determine if you are going to Evacuate, Lockdown (enhanced), or Counter. These can be done in any order depending upon the circumstances you encounter.
14 Evacuate Those closest to the intruder are in danger. Take advantage of opportunity to evacuate, if safe to do so. Consider window (break in top corner) or alternative routes. Do you know all of the evacuation routes from each of your classrooms? Make sure to consider Emergency Exits as a viable evacuation point. Avoid elevators.
15 Should I Leave in My Car? Leaving in your vehicle could clog the routes emergency vehicles are using to get to the school to end the situation and help those in need. You could get stuck in a traffic jam, making you a sitting target. You can use cars for cover to hide and protect yourself.

17 Lockdown (Enhanced) Secure the door. Barricade the door. Spread out throughout the room. Make a plan (prepare and communicate with each other in the room). Be prepared to counter. What is available for you to throw? What can you do to distract the intruder?
18 BARRICADE Place obstacles and other objects in and around the door way to prevent access and delay the intruder. After barricading the door, move quickly to a place away from the door and spread out if possible. Be prepared to Counter or Evacuate. Call 911 when safe. Inform when appropriate.

20 What is Next? Gather things you can use to distract and/or throw at the intruder (books, water bottles, backpacks, keys, chairs, scissors, etc.). Find alternate routes and ways to evacuate (windows, other doors, sliding walls, use emergency exits, etc.). Plan for your next action. Make a decision, commit to your decision and take action quickly. Disrupt the ability of the intruder to think and make decisions.

22 Safety is More Important than Silence Students eyes and ears can be the most valuable tool to keep our school safe. Report what you see and know about any (potential) dangerous situation. If you are aware of or witness suspicious/dangerous behavior, report the incident immediately to a staff member or 911. Even if you are unsure, error on the side of caution and report the incident. If you are aware of or witness suspicious/dangerous behavior off campus, immediately report the incident to police (911) and your parents.
23 Counter Act without hesitation. Commit to your actions. Act as a team, one unit, one purpose. Do whatever is necessary to survive. Throw items, push the intruder, try to evacuate. Only swarm/tackle if it is the last resort.

25 FAQs What if I cannot get to the rally point? Keep yourself SAFE and notify others you trust of your location. (parents, teachers, friends, etc.). That way we will know you are safe. Where is the rally point? National Guard Camp (east of Stevens High School on Range Road), South Canyon Lutheran Church (north of Stevens High School). What if you are in the hall? Get to a safe location and implement ALICE for yourself. What if I am in the bathroom? Implement ALICE. What if I cannot get into a classroom? Implement ALICE.
26 FAQs Please write down questions that you still have regarding a violent intruder situation. Include the name of your teacher on your paper. Your teacher will do her/his best to answer your questions. Teachers will turn in any questions to the office they are not able to answer or do not have time to answer. Answers to your questions will be generated and shared. We will be implementing ALICE from this point forward.
