1 Year 12 IB Revision Outline 2010 Dear Year 12 IB Diploma students and parents The following pages provide an outline of the various revision materials and activities available to International Baccalaureate Diploma students as a part of the preparation for the forthcoming November examination session. Much preparation work has been conducted over the past 21 months and the final revision process is one where students have that bit more time at their disposal to ensure that practice makes perfect. What is outlined for each subject in this booklet is by no means exhaustive and students are encouraged to ask their teachers if they are unsure how to tackle any aspect of their revision program. Likewise, students are encouraged to seek feedback on examination practice questions in preparation for the final papers. An IB Diploma examination timetable has also been included to assist student in preparing a revision timetable. Each subject is listed alphabetically. Best wishes. Richard Bruford Dean of Studies Senior School

All other aspects of student s external assessment were undertaken in the Week 8 Trial Examinations. Performance in the Trial Examination will point to the specific approach for each candidate moving forward, as follows: Each candidate will have evidence of areas of strengths and weaknesses, together with evidence of their exam technique, particularly in reference to their ability to choose effectively viz. for both HL and SL candidates: One choice from four in essay paper & three choices from five in data response paper As a result of the Trial exam process: 1. Each candidate will be provided with November Exam papers for each of the last 4 years. 2. Students will select questions from any of the papers depending on their most pressing needs and furnish a full written answer to one or a set of questions to either Ms White or Mr McGuire. 3. Reflection on choice This process will take place continually from now until the November Exam. During the September vacation students may either Ms White or Mr McGuire. Regular communication, of maybe one or two questions is recommended rather than a large suite of questions as turnaround time is shorter, feedback more focussed and specific advice can be better considered by the student.

7 English A1 A detailed revision guide has been supplied to all students and should been referred to. The following is a summary of the key points: Over the next few weeks it is essential that students revise their examination texts from Part 3 Revision steps: 1. The best revision - reread the texts. 2. Then review notes/past essays/connections chart and tasks 3. Produce revision notes that synthesise the aspects of the novels that are similar and different i.e. Genre, Setting, Plot, Characters, Narrative Style, Ideas, Author's Purpose, Author's style (use of devices, techniques and language), 4. Create a quote sheet including brief details of context (who, where, to whom, when, why) for each novel composed of significant phrases, lines, word (at least 10 per novel) Become very familiar with them. Keep them short. 5. Revise and create glossaries of words specific to each text. Integrate these words into your discussion ( distillation, olfactory, dispossessed, outcasts, abominable, frame narrative, personages, etc) Practice Questions 1. Complete the Paper 2 questions (in sections 3 and 5) in the past exam papers. 2. In the sections Prose: The Novel and Short Story and General Questions on Literature of each session choose those questions not already done in class or as a research essay. 3. Decide on which 2 of your exam texts you will use to answer each question 4. Then write a plan based on how you would apply the question to these 2 works. The plan may be a concept map or a jotline/point plan. 5. Repeat this planning exercise with the same question but use a different pair of texts. 6. Plan answers to a minimum of 4 questions 7. write as many practice essays as possible 8. Past exam questions can be found on: L Drive; Senior School; English; IB; 12IB; Past Exam Questions HL or SL Commentaries For commentaries; the Prose and Poetry. Read the pieces; annotate then make a checklist of the areas you would cover in the commentary answer. Do the three pieces and practice writing (by hand) coherently and logically Past exam commentaries can be found on: L Drive; Senior School; English; IB; 12IB; Higher Level Commentaries and Standard Level Commentaries

12 IB Mathematics HL Hints and tips for students: Students need to spend some time with going over notes (theory), trying to do problems with assistance e.g. notes, textbook, and graduating to doing problems without assistance other than data booklet. Students also need to practise non- calculator and calculator questions. Student must be ready by exam time with the knowledge required to answer any questions asked in the exam. Students mainly gain this knowledge by attempting as many exam questions as possible and when stuck finding out what was missed and recording it so they don t forget this important bit of information next time. When finished with a problem, find out if it is correct. The follow up is as important as doing the problem. Was the answer correct? If not, why not? If students cannot find out, then make a note to ask someone as soon as possible. There is a need to work under time restrictions, as this often leads to poor exam technique. Allocate time to cover the core and option topics with less emphasis on the option early on. Do some work on it though so contact with the material is not lost. Spread time equally on calculator and non- calculator questions. Remember: Questions cannot be answered successfully if student s do not have good knowledge, recall of key concepts, ideas and rules. Always use your data booklet when attempting questions. There are 3 types of preparation you need to undertake: Study time Exam practise questions At the end of the revision time set a time for a simulated exam experience. That is, allow 2 hours and 5 minutes each do a paper 1 and paper 2, and 1 hour and 5 minutes for a paper 3. If students can locate solutions mark these papers yourself. Resources available to students: Textbook (review sets for each chapter), chapter 30 for more difficult problems. Revision guide (contains notes and numerous calculator and non- calculator questions). A host of past exam questions already given to you. Any old tests or assignments that you have already been given that you could try again.

13 Physics The following has or will be covered during in lesson time: One set (Paper 1, 2 & 3) of past papers (HL 4.5 hrs & SL 3 hrs) will be done in class under exam conditions. Exact exams will not be identified so the integrity of the exam trial will not be compromised. Past papers will be undertaken from the first lesson back in Term 4 and continue for the allocated time (7 lessons). The examiner s report for the exam (both Hl & SL) will be reviewed as a class. Exam papers and solutions from May 2010 will be distributed to students. Revision to be completed by students outside of class: Continue with questions already distributed (photocopied questions from the book Dot Point IB Physics ) and match with syllabus statement dot points. Exact questions and number of questions completed for each student will be different as the questions undertaken will concentrate on individual weaknesses highlighted by the Trial Examination and topic tests.
