1 GERMAN TWO COURSE INFORMATION ROLLA HIGH SCHOOL PART ONE: SYLLABUS INSTRUCTOR: Tamatha (Tammy) Lueck PHONE: (extension 14202) TEXTBOOK: Deutsch Aktuell I ROOM: 202 CONFERENCE: Fourth COURSE DESCRIPTION German II adds to the student s understanding of the structure of the German language and also increases his/her vocabulary. The emphasis on fundamentals continues in this course. Cultural awareness focuses on the four primary German-speaking countries of the world. GRADING POLICY Your grade in German class accumulates for the entire semester and is divided into the following categories: Assessments: 60% Assignments: 25% Participation: 15%

2 GRADING SCALE A A B B B C C C D D D F 59 and below PORTFOLIO You will be keeping a German Portfolio throughout the year. The primary purpose of this requirement is to help you be more organized. Portfolios will be collected approximately one week prior to the end of the quarter for evaluation. Your portfolio score will be included under the ASSIGNMENT category of your grade. Your portfolio will need to have the following five categories: BLASTs Vocabulary Assessments Notes Miscellaneous ATTENDANCE Foreign languages are learned through practice. Therefore, daily attendance is a vital component in successfully completing the Major Instructional Goals. If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to find out what work was missed. MAKE-UP WORK The student must arrange to complete make-up work within five days after his/her return to school. All assignments or assessments must be completed within five days in order to receive credit. Make-up work will be done outside of regular class time. Mrs.Lueck is available at 7:40 each morning (except Wednesday) and until 3:30 each afternoon (or later by request) to complete make-up work. You may also ask Mrs. Lueck for a pass to PRIDE to do make-up work from absences.

3 TARDIES The Rolla High School Tardy Policy will be strictly enforced in this class. EXTRA CREDIT Extra credit opportunities may be given to an entire class in order to reinforce the Major Instructional Goals. DEADLINES Meeting dealines is a very important skill you need to master no matter what you plan to do once your graduation from high school. Therefore, all assignments and assessments must be completed and turned in by the given deadline. CLASSROOM CONDUCT Since each student and situation is unique, instances involving minor misconduct will be handled as each situation demands. However, all policies set forth in the Student Handbook will be strictly enforced in this classroom. Misconduct occurring when Mrs. Lueck is absent will result in immediate i referral to the office. Please refer to the Policies and Procedures portion of the syllabus for more information regarding classroom norms. TUTORING Tutoring in German is available each morning at 7:40 AM (except Wednesday) or each afternoon until 3:30 PM (or later by request). Students experiencing difficulties should make arrangements to come in during this time for additional help. You may also ask Mrs. Lueck for a pass to PRIDE for extra help with your German.

4 PART TWO: POLICIES AND PROCEDURES BLASTS (Begin Learning and Start Thinking) BLAST activities will be completed at the beginning of each block. You will be given a time limit to complete the BLAST. At the end of the allotted time, we will then correct the BLAST activities. After corrections have been made, BLAST will be collected and graded by Mrs. Leuck. BLASTs will be included in the ASSIGNMENT portion of your grade. Store all BLAST activities in the designated section of your German portfolio. BRINGING SUPPLIES You need to bring the following supplies to class every day: textbook portfolio participation passport paper writing utensil. You may need to bring special supplies for certain projects when announced by Mrs. Lueck. ELECTRONIC DEVICES German Class is an electronic-free environment. The school policy regarding the use of cell phones and other electronic devices will be strictly enforced in this class. FOOD AND DRINK Bottled water is welcome in class. Other beverages or foods should be left in your locker or at home. HALL PASSES Each student will receive five hall passes per sememster. Hall passes may be used only after instructional time. Substitute teachers will be instructed to withhold hall passes. Mrs. Lueck will add 1% to your semester final exam for each unused hall pass. Hall passes are a privilege and may be restricted if necessary.

5 LABELING PAPERS Label all tests, quizzes and assignments with the following information: o Name o Student Number (to be assigned at a later time) o Date LEAVING THE CLASSROOM You must always have permission to leave the classroom. NURSE You must check in with Mrs. Lueck before the tardy bell rings if you wish to see the nurse. In the event of a true medical emergency (blood, bones, and/or bodily fluids) during class time, please excuse yourself quietly after informing me of the situation. PARTICIPATION PASSPORTS Bring your Participation Passport with you every day to class. Each Participation Passport has 54 blank squares. Your goal is to earn stamps to fill the blank squares by attending class, volunteering during class and bringing your supplies to class. You will be expected to complete five passports each semester. A list of passport due dates will be distributed at the beginning of the year. If you do not receive enough stamps to fill an entire Participation Passports, your participation grade will be figured based on the percentage of stamps you earn. You will only receive a stamp for voluntary activities. LUECKLAND In order to ensure student confidentiality, the area behind Mrs. Lueck s desk is off limits to students. I believe that knowing and understanding what is expected of you will truly benefit your experience in this class.
