Course Description: As part of our capacity building initiative, this is a five day course designed for health researchers interested in developing skills in data processing and statistical analysis

The course will be based on principles of good practice for data management and statistical analysis and also focus on applications with examples used throughout from the field of medical statistics.

1 An Introduction to STATA for Medical Statistics Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi invites applications for a course on 'STATA for Medical Statistics', being organized in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine under the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) from November 24-28, Course Description: As part of our capacity building initiative, this is a five day course designed for health researchers interested in developing skills in data processing and statistical analysis using the statistical software package STATA. The course will be based on principles of good practice for data management and statistical analysis and also focus on applications with examples used throughout from the field of medical statistics. There will also be a focus on selecting appropriate statistical methods and on understanding and correctly interpreting the results of statistical analyses. The format for the course will be from the front demonstrations with participants following along on their own computers, interspersed with exercises. Course Overview: An introduction to STATA Essential data management and data processing tools Simple descriptive statistics and hypothesis tests Analysis of continuous outcomes Analysis of binary outcomes Pre-requisites: The course is intended for anyone who would like to use STATA regularly in their day to day work as a data management tool and/or for performing statistical

2 analyses especially for those who have a keen interest in medical or health research Prior experience with data handling and analysis is therefore required, as is familiarity with Microsoft Windows. However, no previous knowledge of STATA is necessary. No prior experience of using STATA is required. Course Content: o An introduction to STATA o Familiarisation with the Stata Windows interface o Understanding STATA commands o STATA essentials: do-files and log-files Essential data management and data processing tools o Preparing data for analysis o Cleaning data: identifying problems and correcting errors o Creating new datasets and variables Simple descriptive statistics and hypothesis tests o Summarising distributions in tables and figures o Basic hypothesis tests: t-tests and chi-square tests Analysis of continuous outcomes o Understanding continuous outcomes o Exploring associations with continuous outcomes o Univariable and multivariable linear regression Analysis of binary outcomes o Understanding binary outcomes o Exploring associations with binary outcomes o Univariable and multivariable logistic regression Venue: Timing: Institute of Home Economics F-4 Hauz Khas Enclave New Delhi am to 5pm on all days Course Coordinator: Dr Geeta Trilok-Kumar ihe.lshtmstatacourse@gmail.com

3 Fee: A course fee of Rs 3000 to cover basic costs of food and consumables will be charged. Application deadline: Applications on the enclosed application form with qualifications, experience in data handling or health research and relevant documents and publications should be sent to the course coordinator not later than 15th October, Selection of Participants: The number of participants is limited and the Institute reserves the right to select participants.
