My tips: Combine Lesson 1 with Lesson 2 see Adaptations and plan for Reading 2. Day 1 Theme 1 Title Education Lesson 1 Reading Pages SB18, TB Objectives For students to practise the following sub skills of READING: revise meanings of target vocabulary (Ex A) revise punctuation (capital letters) (Ex B) prepare to read a text (Ex C) scan for proper nouns (Ex D) predict content (Ex E) understand the purpose of sub-headings (Skills Check 1) Warm Up Use the flashcard activity in the Introduction in TB Anticipated Problems and Solutions Students may want to read every word of the text in the exercises. Set a time limit for each activity - see TB notes for Ex C Materials/ Aids Adaptations Evaluation You may not be familiar with the pronunciation in English of some proper nouns. You may not recognise the three illustrations. SB class board flashcards You may feel there is not enough work in each lesson. Skills Check 1 is never explicitly referred to in the SB or TB notes. Leave evaluation until you have completed Reading 2. Bra silia s = /z/ Sao Paolo /C11V20C1V20C16V19 The diagram is a proof of Pythagoras Theorem. The painting is of Henry VIII of England. The photo is of Sao Paolo, Brazil. Combine Reading 1 and Reading 2 into one lesson. Go over Skills Check 1 after Ex C.
Day 2 Theme 1 Title Education Lesson 2 Reading Pages 19 SB, TB Objectives For students to practise the following sub skills of READING: identify the main verb in a sentence (Ex A and Skills Check 2) use subheadings to predict content (Ex B Q1) find location of key information (Ex B Q2) reading for detail (Handout Ex see Materials below) learning real world knowledge (Handout ex and Ex C) Warm Up If you are combining the two reading lessons, you do not need to do a warm up. Anticipated Problems and Solutions There is a mistake in Ex B. Omit the third question. Do the extra activities on the handout Reading 2 at this point see the end of this document. Materials/ Aids Adaptations Evaluation Home Assignment SB class board flashcards (optional) handout exercise see end of this document Combine Reading Lessons 1 and 2 in order to leave more time later for the Skills Checks. Leave out Reading 2 Ex B # 3 and replace with the handout exercises (see above). Ex C (CB) can be used for evaluation. Students write 5 facts that they have learned this week in school. There is an additional handout on the website which can be printed off. This gives intensive reading practice.
My Tip: Start using file cards to evaluate and monitor progress in writing. (I have also suggested this for speaking) Write each student s name on a file card. When you monitor during writing activities, make a note on the relevant card about their writing. Give marks out of 5 for handwriting, spelling, punctuation, accuracy, fluency, or completion of task etc. Focus on one or two different areas each lesson. You will soon build a profile for each student which will help when writing reports etc. Day 3 Theme 1 Title Education Lesson Writing 1 Pages SB 20, TB Objectives For students to practise the following sub skills of WRITING: relate sight and sound (Ex A) spelling of words with each of the vowel letters (Ex A) controlled practice of the use of articles (Ex B) understand and practise SVO pattern sentences with the addition of prepositional phrases (Exs C and D) Warm Up Use the flashcard activity in the introduction in TB. You could also spend a few minutes revising the information in the reading text p 15. Make the flashcard activity more challenging in the following way: Students work with pens/pencils down. flash each card for a count of about 3 seconds do not allow students to write the word yet. remove the flashcard. students write the word from memory. Anticipated Problems and Solutions See Language and Culture and Methodology notes in TB SB tells students to write answers to Ex D in the Students should write in a notebook or you should provide lined paper. workbook. However, the space provided is for the next lesson. Materials/ Aids SB class board flashcards lined paper for Ex D Adaptations The words for Ex C could be written onto cards and then used on the board. See TB page 41. Evaluation Use Ex D for Evaluation. Use file cards to help you - see My Home Assignment Learn the spellings of all the words in Ex A. Tip above. Give a spelling test on these words the next time you see the class.
My Tip: Remember to bring your file cards to today s lesson. Focus on different students work today and also different sub skills e.g. using the correct tense. Don t forget to write the date and title of each activity you are assessing. Day 4 Theme 1 Title Education Lesson Writing 2 Pages SB 21,TB 66-68,WB 7 Objective Warm Up Anticipated Problems and Solutions Materials/ Aids Adaptations For students to practise the following sub skills of WRITING: use a variety of phrases in written English (Ex A, D, Skills Check 1) practise common patterns with learn (Ex B, C, D and Skills Check 2) have less controlled written practice of the target language (Ex D) use a writing plan to help with written work (Ex D) Use the spelling activity in the Introduction in TB. You could also give the students a spelling test on the words given for the Home Assignment in Writing 1. Using the correct tenses for Ex D SB WB Keep the pace up for the Warm Up activities and Ex A leave enough time for students to complete Ex D. See TB notes Evaluation Use Ex D. Use file cards to help you with evaluation (see My Tip for Lesson 1 Writing) Home Assignment Students copy and complete the following sentences: Yesterday, we learnt about Last week, we learnt that Today, we learnt how
Day 5 Theme 1 Title Education Lesson Reading and Writing (Workbook) Pages WB 10,11 TB Objectives For students to practise the following subskills of READING and WRITING: revise and consolidate all the subskills taught in reading and writing lessons from CB - see right learn real world knowledge based on the subjects of Maths, Geography and History. Warm Up Anticipated Problems and Solutions Materials/ Aids Adaptations In pairs students ask and answer questions about what they have learned in school during the past week see right. Using the correct tense (simple past) for the written activity (Ex I) After students have written one or two sentences, check to see if they are using the correct tense. If not see right. WB class board handout Can you remember? see end of this document map of Yemen see end of this document See General Note p46 TB punctuation Exs C,E,G prepare to read a text Exs A, B scan for proper nouns Exs C,E,G predict content Exs A,B use headings and sub headings Ex B use a writing plan (timeline) to help with written work Ex I use SVO pattern sentences (Ex I) use the correct tense (Ex I) Write the following on the board: What did you learn in Maths/ Geography/ History yesterday/ last week/ this morning? Stop the activity and remind the whole class, if necessary referring back to the text about Q. Victoria. Elicit and write key verbs for the activity on the board: is was are were rule ruled die died become became pass passed
Evaluation Home Assignment Use Ex I for evaluation of writing. Use real world questions for evaluation of reading see handout Can you remember? at the end of this document. Use the suggested questions given for Evaluation on Can you remember - see above Use file cards as suggested for Writing lesson 1 You can do this: as a quiz - individuals answer as pair or group work - questions on the board in prompt form) as a written activity - possibly as home assignment.
