3 Planning English and Literacy Units - using the 3 phase model Target Audience: KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs Date: 9th September 2014 Teachers will be introduced to the 3 phase planning model and a range of effective resources/support materials to plan and deliver English units, as well as familiarising themselves with the changes in the new National Curriculum. A significant amount of time will be spent explaining and demonstrating each of the different planning phases, from the familiarisation of the text type/genre, to the capturing ideas phase and finally the different Campus stages of the writing process. This will be exemplified with planning and pupils work. Teachers will be shown how to include daily phonics sessions in KS1 and discrete spelling/grammar sessions in KS2, as well as the application of all these skills in both shared and guided reading and writing sessions. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand the teaching sequence for planning a English unit know where to locate resources/support materials plan effective English units, which lead to quality first teaching

4 Planning Maths Units - using the review-teach-practice-apply model Target Audience: KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs Date: 16th September 2014 Teachers will be introduced to the review-teach-practice-apply model, to ensure maths units are progressive and accelerate pupils progress. They will be shown how to locate the most effective resources/support materials to plan and deliver maths units, as well as familiarising themselves with the changes in the new National Curriculum. A significant amount of time will be spent explaining and demonstrating how to use this teaching sequence within and across a series of lessons to ensure pupils needs are effectively met. Teachers will also be shown how to incorporate assessment for learning techniques into their planning to Campus maximise pupil progress. This will be exemplified with planning and pupils work. 5 IT & Computing Curriculum Target Audience: KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs, ICT Coordinators 23rd September 2014 at 09:00-12:00 or or 30th September 2014 at 09:00-12:00 Cost: free to Greenwich Schools or 125 other schools (including a free copy of the IT & Computing Scheme of Work) Campus The new 2014 National Curriculum replaces ICT with Computing ; this course aims to equip teachers to understand some of the new concepts from this new curriculum and offers some possible software titles and approaches to teaching it. We will begin by unpacking terms such as algorithms and programs, and look at practical approaches for teaching these ideas. Teachers will explore a range of equipment and software for teaching computing, such as BeeBots, LOGO and Scratch, and have a go at writing their own simple programs. All delegates will be provided a copy of the IT & Computing scheme of work, with suggestions for where to look for further resources and information. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand some of the key terms from the Computing National Curriculum explore a range of software and hardware that can be used to teach Computing write their own simple programs

6 Teaching Reading Part 1: Phonics - Implementing Letters & Sounds Target Audience: Reception and KS1 teachers, NQTs, English Coordinators Date: 7th October 2014 Teaching Reading Part 1 can be completed on its own or as part of our 3-part reading course Cost: 70 Course Preparation: knowledge of the Primary National Strategy Letters and Sounds synthetic phonics programme Campus This course aims to familiarise teachers with the most effective strategies for delivering the Letters and Sounds phonics programme, to enable pupils to be Reading by Six (OFSTED 2010) and to achieve the expectations in the new English National Curriculum. Teachers will be shown how to plan daily phonics sessions which follow the review-teach-practice-apply sequence. They will take part in a range of phonic activities which teach pupils to listen for and discriminate between sounds, blend phonemes to read words, segment words into phonemes to spell words and strategies for teaching the spelling of tricky/high frequency words. Part of the session will also cover teachers own subject knowledge of the 44 phonemes and various graphemes which represent them, as well as assessment systems and procedures which set high expectations and accelerate progress. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand how to use the Letters and Sounds programme to deliver effective daily phonics sessions and to use assessments to accelerate progress become familiar with a number of generic phonic activities/resources improve their own phonic knowledge

7 Drama, Role Play Areas & Talk for Writing Target Audience: Reception, KS1 & KS2 teachers, NQTs, English Coordinators Date: 25th November 2014 This course advocates the use of role play areas throughout the primary age range to inspire and motivate pupils to learn independently and to primarily develop pupils literacy skills. Teachers will have the opportunity to visit role play areas in classrooms across the school and be shown how to incorporate role play areas effectively into their curriculum plans. The course will demonstrate how to use drama techniques to develop pupils comprehension skills as well as their speech. Teacher modelling will be used to demonstrate Campus how pupils should learn to talk the text type, as well as assess and improve the level of their speech. The course will also show teachers how to include these approaches into the teaching sequence when planning English units. 8 Maths - Teaching Mental Strategies Target Audience: Reception, KS1/2 Teachers, NQTs Date: 13th January 2015 Teachers will be taken through the range of mental strategies used for each of the 4 operations and the progression across year groups, taking in to account the expectations in the new National Curriculum. This will include approaches such as partitioning, bridging, counting on or back and near doubles. They will be shown a range of resources to ensure whole class interaction and to support pupils in developing the important skill of Campus visualisation. The course will also look at the importance of open questions to ensure application of mental strategies and to extend learning. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand the range mental strategies for each of the 4 operations know how to plan and deliver effective mental/oral starters know a range of interactive strategies/activities to engage the whole class know how to use open questions to extend learning

9 Teaching Reading Part 2: Comprehension Strategies Target Audience: Reception, KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs Date: 20th January 2015 Teaching Reading Part 2 can be completed on its own or as part of our 3-part reading course Campus This course will explore a range of comprehension strategies to deepen pupils understanding and increase their enjoyment of reading, taking account of the new National Curriculum. Activities will include: activating prior knowledge about a context, making predictions, constructing images, questioning, text structure analysis, semantic strategies and interpretive strategies. This will be exemplified with planning and pupils work. Teachers will be shown how to model strategies during shared and guided reading and through the use of APP, target pupils needs effectively. The course will also look at the role of Reading Journals in developing an in-depth knowledge and understanding of a novel and/or author. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand the breadth of comprehension strategies required to raise attainment in reading be able to use APP effectively to set expectations and target the needs of different ability groups

10 Teaching Reading Part 3: Guided Reading Target Audience: Reception, KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs Date: 10th February 2015 Teaching Reading Part 1 can be completed on its own or as part of our 3-part reading course This course aims to support teachers throughout every phase of the guided reading process, from organising groups, to selecting appropriate texts, planning sessions and ensuring objectives/targets are specifically matched to the abilities of each group through the use of assessments. Teachers will be introduced to the teaching sequence for planning and delivering guided reading sessions and take account of the new National Curriulum. The course Campus will demonstrate how to ensure pupils apply their phonic knowledge and spelling strategies into their independent reading, as well as developing their comprehension skills. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) be able to implement the teaching sequence to plan and deliver guided reading sessions feel confident in choosing good quality texts and organising groupings set objectives/targets which specifically develop pupils application of phonic/spelling strategies and/or comprehension skills

11 Using ipads across the Curriculum Target Audience: EYFS, KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs, ICT Coordinators Date: 3rd March 2015 The ipad has the potential to be a powerful and mobile tool for learning across the whole curriculum. This course will develop teachers confidence in using an ipad and demonstrate how it could be used to raise attainment across the curriculum. Participants will examine the difference between learning ICT and ICT for learning and use the SAMR model as a way of considering how to embed ICT into the curriculum. They will be given hands-on experience to explore a range of educational ipad apps, with suggestions given as to how they might be used in specific subjects, i.e. using the Camera app in Literacy, Campus Explain Everything in Numeracy, Keynote and Safari in Geography etc. The course will then give time for teachers to reflect on how they might use ipads in their own classroom. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand how to use ICT as a tool for learning, using the SAMR model to consider how to embed ICT further into their teaching feel confident in how to use a range of ipad apps across the curriculum have the opportunity to plan in future use of ICT in their teaching

12 Maths - Progression in Written Calculations and Problem Solving Target Audience: Reception, KS1 & 2 Teachers, NQTs Date: 24th March 2015 Campus Teachers will be shown the clear progression in written calculations for the 4 operations, reflecting the new National Curriculum. This will include the year groups in which the different methods should be introduced and the importance of mental strategies underpinning all written calculations. The course will explore the importance of teaching problem solving (Using and Applying) and how to plan for this during every maths unit using the reviewteach-practice-apply sequence. The generic steps for teaching problem solving will be introduced to teachers, as well as a range of problem solving activities and suggested resources. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand the progression in written calculations for the 4 operations understand the generic steps involved in solving a problem know how to plan more problem solving activities into a maths unit

13 Guided Writing - KS2 Target Audience: KS2 teachers, NQTs Date: 14th April 2015 Time: 09:00-12:00 Course Preparation: Samples of independent writing from one ability group Campus Teachers will be shown how to use their assessments of independent writing to set writing targets and plan guided writing sessions. The course will demonstrate how to incorporate this into an English unit, highlighting the importance of the capturing ideas phase of the teaching sequence to generate the content and language for their pupils writing. Teachers will also be shown how to ensure pupils are applying their phonic/spelling strategies and grammatical knowledge into their independent writing, through explicit modelling and reference to the new National Curriculum. 15 Art - Sketchbooks Target Audience: KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs Date: 21st April 2015 Teachers will be introduced to the idea of using a sketchbook to record the range of techniques and the progression of skills required to produce a final piece of artwork. This is a practical session and participants will have the opportunity to explore a range of mediums. Teachers will be shown how to use lines, shapes, patterns and colour to create movement, textures, moods and Campus perspective. This will include studying significant artists and their work, to examine composition, scale and subject matter. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) be confident in using a range of mediums to develop pupils basic skills understand how to use sketchbooks effectively to raise attainment in art

16 30p fruit money30p fruit money Film Making with imovie Target Audience: KS1 /2 teachers, NQTs, ICT Coordinators Date: 28th April 2015 Campus This course aims to give teachers the confidence to use film as a tool across the whole curriculum for children to communicate and share their ideas, stories and experiences. Teachers will be guided through the whole film-making process, from developing the initial idea to understanding different ways of sharing the final product. The course will explain the planning stages of film production, such as scripting and storyboarding, and look at the key elements to visual story-telling. Teachers will have hands-on experience shooting and editing film footage, using digital cameras and Apple Mac software imovie. The course will then explore how to present the finished work, whether through making a DVD or uploading films so that they can be viewed on your schools MLE. The course makes use of Apple Mac computers, but the skills and understanding would be applicable when using any computing platform (PC/Linux etc). 17 Grammar for Writing Target Audience: KS1 & 2 teachers, NQTs, English Coordinators Date: 12th May 2015 This course aims to improve teachers grammatical subject knowledge. Based on the grammar expectations from the new English National Curriculum, it will cover areas such as word class, word modification, sentence construction, punctuation and text cohesion. Teachers will be shown how to use this knowledge to plan discrete grammar sessions into their English units, as well as demonstrating how to apply their knowledge in shared and guided reading and writing sessions. Teaching approaches/activities will include explicit teacher modelling, oral Campus rehearsal of sentences/paragraphs, interactive and multi-sensory activities. Participants will also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the spelling, punctuation and grammar tests. 18 Provision for Pupils with English as an Additional Language Target Audience: FS, KS1 & 2 Teachers, NQTs Date: 2nd June 2015 Cost: 110 (including resources) This course is aimed at ensuring all pupils for whom English is an additional language, receive inclusive and effective support from the moment they arrive at school. Teachers will explore the typical language issues that EAL pupils face, how to assess their speech and how to create an inclusive classroom environment. Participants will be given a language folder containing translations for the most common languages spoken in the area, as well as simple pictures/symbols to teach basic communication. In addition to this a sample class teacher EAL folder and induction folder for Campus newly arrived pupils will be provided. This will contain information on the most effective approaches/strategies for teaching EAL pupils and a range of games to support language development. (This course could be run at your school or at cluster level, if there are a significant number of participants.) understand the typical language issues for bilingual/multilingual pupils know a range of teaching strategies, games and resources to support EAL pupils be provided with a free language folder, induction folder and class information folder to support EAL pupils

19 Deploying ipads Successfully Target Audience: ICT Coordinators, Curriculum Managers & Deputy Heads Date: bespoke training to be arranged by the school Time: to be arranged Cost: to be arranged Campus Many schools across the world are using ipads in the classroom as an engaging and effective tool for learning. However, ipads are a relative newcomer to education and require a different approach when considering how to purchase, setup and use them in the classroom. This course will guide you through the potential pitfalls and important considerations when it comes to planning and executing a successful ipad deployment. We will: look at the mission of your school and your vision for using ipads, consider the importance of having senior leaders as part of the strategic planning team, delve into the details of deployment planning, such as ensuring there is robust wifi available, examining the range of Mobile Device Management (MDM) servers that are available to support deploying and maintaining your ipads, and look at the Apple Configurator software, examine possible finance and funding options of how to pay for ipads as well as considering how existing IT support would be involved in the setup and management of ipads, consider how to engage the wider school community, such as communicating with parents and talking to the press, look at content and institutional practice, ranging from how to choose and buy apps and digital textbooks to looking at building in an effective CPD programme to train up staff on how to effectively use the ipad, consider how to measure success, to know if your deployment is working well or not. Part 1 will focus on the recommendations for the teaching of Early Reading through synthetic phonics, using the Letters and Sounds Programme. Part 2 will explore the broad range of comprehension strategies required for pupils to develop a deeper understanding of the texts they read, as well as Campus developing an enjoyment of reading.
