2 BEYOND THE BOOKS Honours Arts Your university education isn t just what happens in the classroom. It s the clubs you join, the people you meet, and the experiences that inspire you. As an Honours Arts student, you choose what to major in, which activities to devote your time to, and whether or not you want to study abroad honours majors to choose from academic societies for Honours Arts students to join #BEYONDIDEAS Jessie s learned to balance academics and extracurriculars in order to get the most out of his time at university. As a volunteer with the Faculty of Arts, he mentors high school students and shares the experiences that led him from high school in Scarborough, Ontario, to being a student leader within the University of Waterloo community. For him, giving back is just as important as what happens in the classroom. JESSIE CO-OP DOUBLE MAJOR IN LEGAL STUDIES AND SOCIOLOGY Whether Jessie s playing intramural basketball or making an argument during a mock trial competition, extracurricular activities help him expand his résumé and develop his leadership capacity. 3 HONOURS ARTS Explore, create, and contribute. Honours Arts lets you explore, create, and contribute to our understanding of the world and each other. Arts programming is flexible; it lets you combine the things you re passionate about as you build the skills and experiences you ll need for the future. As you study, you ll become adaptable, make connections, and solve problems. You ll gain a global perspective and experiences that will make you a better you. An original. The kind of person who makes a mark on the world. HONOURS ARTS is one of the more flexible honours programs, making it easy to add multiple minors, specializations, or a double major. 6 MAJORS with a co-op option 25 STUDENT CAP on two required first-year courses 16MAJOR TOPIC SPECIALIZATION These are 4 to 6 courses within a major that allow you to concentrate on an area you are most interested in. INTENSIVE SPECIALIZATION Some majors offer an intensive specialization. This is 4 to 6 courses, in addition to the 16 in your major, which give you more in-depth knowledge in a particular area and better prepare you for further studies in graduate or professional school. MAJOR Your main area of focus, your major requires 16 courses and counts toward the 40 courses. You will need to choose at least one honours major. Some students decide to do 2 in a double major. Depending on the subjects you choose to study, these courses may also count towards your major or minor. 14 REMAINING MINOR MINOR Requires 8 courses in one subject area and counts towards your 40 courses. Some students choose to do one to two minors, in addition to a major. pursuing a minor is optional. You ll develop your ability to analyze problems and think of creative solutions. COMMUNICATE Make yourself heard. You ll find your voice, your inspiration, and share your ideas in assignments, written essays, research, and presentations. LEAD AND COLLABORATE Work with extracurricular teams, clubs, and organizations on campus. Develop your leadership skills in student government. Or become an entrepreneur and lead your own company. BE CREATIVE Develop your problem-solving skills and creativity through assignments and on-campus activities. Learn to be curious and express your originality. GO GLOBAL Find out more about the world. Here, we are motivated by a deep commitment to curiosity, creativity, and the desire to understand and engage the world. 6 EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS With Honours Arts, you get to choose your path of study; you can go regular or go co-op! Waterloo students in both paths learn from the same professors, take the same required courses, and have opportunities to connect with other students, clubs, and activities on campus. GO REGULAR A regular course of study is the most predictable and fastest way to complete your degree and move on to your next goals. You can keep to the schedule you're used to, studying in the fall and winter, and working or exploring the world in the summer. Or you can take courses in the summer and accelerate, completing your Honours degree in less than three years. The choice is yours. GO CO-OP In the winter of your second year, you ll start your first co-op work term. Alternate study and work terms in jobs that challenge you, connect your school work to practical experience, and explore career options. Waterloo s co-op program (the world s largest) links you to more than 6,700 employers all over the globe. Just imagine where you could go! And with 20 months of paid, real-world experience, it s a huge bonus for your bank account and your résumé. ADMISSIONS 2018 ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Minimum admission requirements: completed high school diploma with 6 Grade 12 U or M courses, including English.
