2 The Roots of I-BEST To address dismal college performance for lower-skilled students, Washington State developed the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) together with the college system.

3 The Roots of I-BEST I-BEST sets aside traditional notions that students must first complete all levels of basic education before they can start vocational training programs. It is designed to support basic education students to certificate and degree completion.

6 1: Non-Integrated Instruction The basic skills instructor assumes a support role and assists students who are struggling with the professional-technical content. 7 2: Non-Integrated Instruction with Separate, Contextualized Basic Skills The technical and basic skills instructors jointly identify the basic skills that are needed to succeed in the course, which are then taught separately. 8 3: Partially Integrated Instruction The basic skills instructor assumes a support role, but the course content now includes more focus on basic skills in addition to the professionaltechnical content.
