3 From the Principal s Desk... Welcome back! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas break. It is always a blessing to enjoy the time off and enjoy some much-needed family time. Our 2 nd semester is underway and many are looking to the finish line that will be here before we know it. I am not sure where the year has gone, it seems like last week I was visiting with you at registration. Many exciting activities and events are planned for this semester and I know students are looking forward to them. One such event is an event often referred to as Experts in the Classroom. The reason I mention it is that students often tell parents we re doing nothing today, so check me out. I would argue that this is one of our most important days for students. Experts in the Classroom is a 2.5-hour period where we have various activities planned for our different age students. Senior and junior students spend time listening and interacting with experts in the field of business, medicine, automotive, banking, etc. This is a great time for students to hear about careers that interest them. Students often don t know what they want to be when they grow up. Ask your student. If they don t know, this is a great opportunity to find out about different careers. If they do know, it s a great time to network with those already in the field and to hear more about life in that venue. While our seniors and juniors are hearing from experts, sophomore students spend time at RTI hearing about the various programs offered to RHS students. They hear about building trades, culinary arts, early childhood, health sciences, and many other programs they have available to them during their last two years of high school. It s another great opportunity for students to explore potential career-related fields. Finally, and again during this time, our freshmen take part in our Freshmen Leadership Summit. This year, we have a former National FFA Officer coming to speak on personal growth and leadership. This will be an engaging and motivating time for our freshmen students that will challenge them in the area of time management, goal-setting, career planning, and citizenship. As you can see, this isn t a day your student should miss. Another activity taking place this semester will be the enrollment for classes. Students will receive information from classroom teachers and counselors starting Friday, January 26. Our annual Enrollment Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31 st from 5:00-7:00. Students and parents are encouraged to attend and visit with teachers from RHS, RTI, & RTC about the different classes being offered. It s a great way to meet teachers, hear about classes, and begin to plan for next year s schedule. Please mark your calendars to join us on January 31 st in the RHS lower commons area. I would like to congratulate two of our students for their work with our school board. Ms. Ashley Barth ended her year of service to the Rolla School Board in December. She spent the year representing the students of RPS and did a fantastic job. Mr. Dan King begins his year-long term this month. He will have the opportunity to see how the board runs, provide input from a student s perspective, and be a part of a very good and involved Board of Education. A big thank you goes out to both these students as they work to make RHS and our district better. In closing, I want to thank you for your continued support and encouragement to your student s ongoing progress in education. Rolla High School faculty and staff strive every day for excellence and certainly need and appreciate all your help. If I can answer questions or be of assistance, please let me know. 5 WELCOME TO PBS! Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn are all components of the Positive Behavior Support program in place in the Rolla School District. Being prepared for class is part of the Ready to Learn aspect. As students get older, this component changes from simply having notebook and pencil every day to managing multiple classes and outside activities. At the high school level, students have multiple demands placed on them every day. In order to keep all of these things straight, students are asked to be organized. One of the ways to help with this is by ensuring students have and use a planner. Steven Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, states that people who habitually use a planner are far more successful than those who don t. Using a planner ensures things that are important are not pushed off to the last minute. Saturday detention is an attempt to modify unacceptable student behavior without loss of valuable classroom instruction and course credit. The administration has the discretion of assigning students Saturday detention in lieu of suspension for minor infractions. Saturday detention is held on Saturday mornings between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. under the supervision of a certified staff member of the Rolla School District. Students reporting late will be given an additional hour of detention for every 5 minutes late up to 15 minutes. Students reporting after 8:15 a.m. will not be admitted and the student/ parents will be notified of the resulting disciplinary action. Transportation is the responsibility of the student. No meals will be served. Failure to attend Saturday detention will result in additional disciplinary action up to and including suspension. Assigned detention will not be rescheduled unless there is an emergency and a parent/administrator conference is held.
