2 Course Description Introduction to software development and management of the development process. Topics include: managing the software life cycle (requirements definition, logical design, physical design, implementation, testing, system integration, maintenance); design techniques (structured, event-driven, object-oriented); implementation; testing and software quality assurance; delivery and user training; metrics for project management and system performance evaluation; management expectations; personnel management, cost analysis and change management; management of behavioral and technical project aspects. (3 credits). Workload Participation: You will be required to complete the reading assignment for each week and participate actively in the class discussions of the reading. Pop Quizzes: There will be short pop quizzes throughout the course. In most cases, these quizzes will cover material from the previous lecture, the current lecture, and the reading expected to be done for the current day. Quizzes typically will be given in the first 10 minutes of class. There will be a quiz in about half the classes. There are no make-ups. Exams: There will be one in-class examination and no final exam. All exams will be closed book, closed notes. There are no make-up exams. Missed exams receive a grade of 0. Husky Air Case Assignments: This is a set of individual assignments based on a case study that will be assigned throughout the first part of the semester. Each student will complete specific deliverables of the case study based on material covered in the lectures. Final Project: The class will be divided into teams to conduct requirements definition, system design and system implementation projects. Each phase of these projects will require project management, and each student will perform the role of either project manager or assistant project manager for at least one project phase. Some students may have the opportunity to manage more than one phase. During planning, execution, and evaluation of each phase, the assigned project manager and assistant project manager will have specific duties and responsibilities, to be defined later. Other members of the project team will work on the project only during the normal class periods.
3 Planning for each project phase will take place both outside of and during the normal class periods. Execution of each project phase will take place only during the normal class periods. Work products will be collected at the end of each normal class period and redistributed at the beginning of the next appropriate normal class period. Evaluation of each project phase of will take place both outside of and during the normal class periods. Presentations: Each student will make short presentations as required in the role of project manager or assistant project manager. Some of these presentations will be outside of the normal class period. Presentations are to be professionally done. The presenter s attitude, demeanor, appearance, and general professionalism are of equal importance to the content of the presentation. Written Assignments: All written and printed assignments will be typed following the guidelines set out in the documentation standards, available on ANGEL. Written work not following the guidelines may receive a grade of 0. The content is important and will be given due weight when graded. However, equally important is the writing. Be sure to create an outline (down to the level of each paragraph) and carefully proofread for unclear prose, poor sentence-flow, poor grammar, and misspellings. 4 Policy on Assignments and Academic Integrity Any assignments stated to be individual-based are to be completed on individual basis, i.e., on your own. Group efforts are not acceptable. Late assignments will be accepted for 4 days beyond the deadline with a penalty of 10% per day (including weekends and other holidays). If you have problems meeting the deadlines, you are encouraged to consult me at my office. Being absent from class for one reason or another is not an excuse for submitting assignments late. In such cases, contact me or type the assignment and submit it through electronic mail ( ). When acts of academic dishonesties occur, college policies and procedures will be followed, often leading to severe penalties. Policy on Attendance and Conduct in Classroom Faculty Senate legislation mandates student attendance in all classes. Students who are unable to attend the examinations or meet deadlines for assignments on particular days due to religious beliefs, must contact me ahead and work out alternate arrangements. Students are expected to behave as reasonable adults, motivated to explore the subject matter with proper guidance from the instructor. Late arrivals and early departures, disturb the entire class and should be avoided. As per Senate policy, students whose unexcused absences exceed 15 percent of the scheduled classes and laboratories may receive a lowered grade or failure at my discretion. Absence from class is not an excuse for missing information, quizzes or examinations. Disability Statement Students with documented disabilities may be entitled to specific accommodations. The College at Brockport's Office for Student with Disabilities makes this determination. 5 Weather Conditions and Class Cancellations I have no authority to cancel classes, no matter what the weather condition is. Only the President of the College makes that decision. On days of severe weather conditions, please listen to WBSU (89.9 FM) and WHAM (1180 AM) for class cancellations. You may also call 395- COLD at the College. If I have any information, I will try my best to send , leave voice mail, or post messages. Evacuation Policy All fire alarms, emergency voice notification system messages, etc., are to be taken seriously, especially in this time of heightened security awareness and the potential need to evacuate a building for other reasons such as an emergency response to a spill or other event. Evacuation of the facility is mandatory until the signal to reenter has been given by the Brockport Fire Department, University Police, or Environmental Health and Safety personnel.
