Course Description This course is an introduction to the basic principles of nutrition as they relate to the health and physical wellness of individuals. The topics covered include macronutrients, micronutrients, diet and health, weight management, dietary analysis, current nutrition trends, food safety, and physical fitness. Recommended Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 84 Student Learning Outcomes 1. Interpret and evaluate information provided on a Nutrition Fact Panel. 2. Analyze a mainstream nutrition article and evaluate the reliability and credibility of nutritional content. 3. Apply current nutrition standards and dietary guidelines to analyze and evaluate personal dietary intake. Course Materials Textbook: Schiff, Wendy. Nutrition for Healthy Living, 4 th edition (This textbook is sold as a bundled package with Connect Plus.) NOTE: Connect is required for this course. E-book is recommended as a more affordable option. In addition, it automatically comes with access to Connect. Attendance Success in the class is dependent upon regular attendance meaning regularly logging into our Etudes class site. This course adheres to the El Camino College Distance Education Add/Drop policy, therefore any student may be dropped from the class if that student fails to actively participate or submit assignments/quizzes. *There will NOT be an in-person orientation held for this course. Any or all of the following actions may be imposed: Assign a zero or F to work in question Assign final grade of F in course Dismissal from course Suspension or expulsion if in accordance with El Camino College s Due Process and Disciplinary Procedures Withdrawing It is solely the student s responsibility to officially withdraw or drop a course. Students who wish to drop a course must have name taken off of class roster. Failure to do so will result in an F in the course. Deadlines All due dates and times will be listed according to Pacific Time Zone. Course material will be posted at 8:00 am on Mondays and will be closed at 11:59pm the following Monday. NO EXTENSIONS will be given, so please allocate your time throughout the week to log into Etudes, read assigned material, and complete assignments and quizzes. *Please keep in mind that computers and Internet connections are not perfect and may have difficulties at times. It is your responsibility to have a backup plan if technology should fail. Etudes Information You will regularly need to access our Etudes class site. AVATAR Add an avatar or photo Midterms & Final Exam The midterms and final will be taken in Etudes. Please be sure to prepare for the content in advance, as they will be time-restricted. MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL NOT BE OFFERED. Dietary Analysis Project Additional software is not required. We will be using the FREE government website to access the SuperTracker program. Late projects will NOT be accepted. Assignments ALL assignments must be submitted on or before specified due dates. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE PENALIZED BY 20% EACH DAY PAST THE DUE DATE. Please note that after a certain date, points will no longer be attainable. *You will have access to all available resources throughout the semester. For that reason, there will not be any opportunities for extra credit.
