1 MHSC Fresno Enrichment Course Descriptions *Note- If your child will be at school during one of our scheduled student Lunch times please make sure they bring a sack lunch. K-1 Variety Days and Times: Mondays 9am-12pm, Mondays 12:30pm- 3:30pm, Wednesdays 9am-12pm Teacher: K-1 AM Classes: Margaret DenHartog; K-1 PM Monday Class: Brook LLanos Room: Upstairs Room 1 This is a theme-based class where all activities are designed around the science topic of reptiles. Students will interact with their classmates as they discover amazing facts and information about these fascinating creatures. Concepts are taught through literature, videos, drawing, crafts, writing, speaking, role-play, interactive poetry, music, and games. Math & Critical Thinking Grades 2/3 Math is Fun! Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 9am-10am Room: 2 This class is designed to help foster a love of math for children in grades 2 and 3. Activities will support age-appropriate goals for math found in most curriculum and utilize hands-on material. Children will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other students and increase math vocabulary through both oral and written communication.

2 Grades 4/5 Math is Fun! Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 11am-12pm Room: 2 The Math Enrichment class for grades 4 and 5 will help students at this level apply skills they are learning at home to the real world through fun, collaborative and independent activities. Hands on games and projects are designed to increase skills taught in most math books for this age group. Grades 6/7/8 Math & Critical Thinking Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 1pm-2pm Room: 2 Middle school students will be invited to participate in projects that cultivate a better understanding of how math works in the real world. Activities will help struggling students find relevance through fun, simple and collaborative assignments with the goal of decreasing math anxiety. Advanced students will have the opportunity to further apply their skills. Language Arts Grades 2/3 Writing & Technology Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 10am-11am Teacher: Stephanie Ganzenhuber The writing and technology class will encourage students to become more familiar with Chromebook (laptops) through hands on exposure, which includes typing at each class meeting as well as at home. Students will gain a firm grasp on the 4 types

3 of sentences, learn figurative language and how to to write a 3 paragraph essay using the 4-square writing method. Grades 3/ Grades 4 Reader s Theater Days and Times: Tuesdays 10:30am-12pm Reader s Theater provides an opportunity for children to develop oral communication skills, reading fluency, and critical thinking skills in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Readers will work in small groups and have access to book sets, scripts and materials to create book projects. *You may bring a snack to eat in class. Grades 6/7/8 Writing & Technology Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 9am-10am Teacher: Stephanie Ganzenhuber The writing and technology class will encourage students to become more familiar with chromebooks (laptops) through hands on exposure, which includes typing in class and at home. They will learn Chromebook shortcuts. Students will gain a firm grasp on sentence structure as well as how to use figurative language in their writing. They will produce 5-8 paragraph essays using both the 4-square method and other methods of prewriting.

4 Spanish Grades 2/3 Spanish Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 11am-12pm Teacher: Martha Gaviria This is a full immersion Spanish class, which means it is almost completely in Spanish. Please let your children know that their experience will feel like if they are learning Spanish in a Spanish Only Speaking country. This class will introduce basic greetings and conversations, colors, numbers, alphabet, and days of the week. Grades 4/5 Spanish Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 9am-10am Teacher: Martha Gaviria This is a full immersion Spanish class, which means it is almost completely in Spanish. Please let your children know that their experience will feel like if they are learning Spanish in a Spanish Only Speaking country. This class will start with Review of colors, alphabet, numbers, calendar and basic questions. Through art, games and interactive activities students will also learn about the Solar System and finish semester with a Unit on Places. Grades 6/7/8 Spanish Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 9am-10am Teacher: Martha Gaviria This is a full immersion Spanish class, which means it is almost completely in Spanish. Please let your children know that their experience will feel like if they are learning Spanish in a Spanish Only Speaking country. This class will review basic

5 Spanish and then quickly move into Conversation Stations. Students will be given scenarios and learn/practice and reenact typical conversations for various situations (ie. Going to the store, the bookstore, the bank, a restaurant, the doctor etc.). This upper grade Spanish class will encourage Spanish speaking practice! Science Grades 4/5 STEM Science Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 10am-11am Teacher: Brook Hirata Room: 5 4th/5th STEM Science will focus on engineering, lab activities, and solving real world problems. Students will work in partners and groups to plan and create like engineers to find solutions for problems. Hands-on activities and technology will be incorporated throughout the class. The class will touch on 4th & 5th grade science standards. Grades 6/7/8 STEM Science Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 11am-12:30pm Teacher: Brook Hirata Room: 5 6th/7th/8th STEM Science will focus on engineering, lab activities, and solving real world problems. Students will work in partners and groups to plan and create like engineers to find solutions for problems. Hands-on activities and technology will be incorporated throughout the class. The class will touch on 6th-8th grade science standards.

6 Grades 3, 4, 5 Lego Robotics Days and Times: Tuesdays 12pm-1:30pm Teacher: Brook Hirata Room: Upstairs Room 1 Lego Robotics is a class designed for 3rd-5th graders who have an interest in Legos and robotics. Students will work in groups to build working robots that they will be able to program with a computer. Students will have an opportunity to do different challenges with their robot after it is built. Grades 6-H.S. ROV Scout Days and Times: Tuesdays 12pm-1:30pm Teacher: Christine Neptune Room: 5 This class is designed for middle school students that have never participated in robotics before. You will learn basic skills in building an ROV frame, electronics, and basic wiring. Students will learn to work with power tools, and soldering stations in a safe manner, all while learning to build a team to compete in an end of the year ROV competition. Grades H.S. ROV Scout, Grades 6,7,8 by teacher approval ONLY Days and Times: Tuesdays 1:30pm-3:00pm Teacher: Christine Neptune Room: 5 This class is designed for Middle School students with some ROV experience, at this level you will be learning to build upon skills from the beginning level. These new skills will include waterproofing a camera for use in underwater missions, and utilizing a video display when piloting your ROV. Advanced scouts will also learn

7 about more advanced concepts for buoyancy. History Grades 4/5 California History Through Writing & Technology Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 12:30pm-2:00pm Teacher: Margaret DenHartog In this class, students will discover the fascinating history of this state in an activities-based format, which will include drama, literature, writing, and technology. We will begin with a brief study of the geography of the state, followed by a chronological look at key events in state history, including the European explorers, Native Americans, and the missions. The spring sessions will include the ranchos, statehood, the gold rush, and the transcontinental railroad. Music & Art Grades 2/3 Art Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 12:30pm-2pm Teacher: Lynn Lane Elements of Art and Principles of design will be the foundation behind all the Art lessons offered for the 2-5th grade classes. Color, composition, and technique is also covered in all lessons. Students will have FUN exploring their individual creativity & talents!!! Grades 2/3 Literacy Through Theater Arts & Puppetry Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 2:30pm-3:30pm

8 This class allows children at the second and third grade level to work collaboratively, developing puppet shows that increase an understanding of literary elements (setting, plot, characterization, etc ) through theater arts. Students will learn about the history of shadow puppetry across cultures and be provided with hands on materials to create puppets and scripts. Grades 4/5 CA History Art Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 2:00pm-3:30pm Teacher: Lynn Lane Elements of Art and Principles of design will be the foundation behind all the Art lessons offered for the 2-5th grade classes. Color, composition, and technique is also covered in all lessons. Students will have FUN exploring their individual creativity & talents!!! Specific Art lessons relating to the California History curriculum will be taught for the 4th - 5th graders. This will cover the explorers, gold miners, missions, and many other related subjects through the many mediums of art! Can't wait to get started! Grades 6/7/8 Art Days and Times: Mondays OR Wednesdays 2:00pm-3:30pm Teacher: Michael McGough Room: 2 The course is designed to introduce the Elements of Art. Then to develop individual art skills and techniques using realism. It culminates with a professional Art Exhibit in Spring semester at the African American Art Museum where the students work is displayed!

9 Recorders and Choir Days and Times: Grades 2/3 / 4 Tuesdays 9:30am-10:30am & Grades 5 / 6/7/8 Tuesdays 11am-12pm Teacher: Alicen Leota Room: Upstair Room 1 These classes will cover basic music fundamentals, note recognition, rhythm and dynamics and time. Students will also begin to learn Solfeggio. They will be learning to read music and play beginning recorder. History of music will be incorporated into each class. Expect students to learn California History Music as well to tie into our theme this year!. Most important students will have Fun! Fun! Fun!
