The course provides a fundamental understanding of the research process that will help students to both competently answer their own inquiries using sound research methods, and to understand and evaluate research done by others. While other courses focus primarily on analyzing data, this course emphasizes the overall research process, beginning with asking questions, and moving through research design, data collection, the basics of data analysis, and data reporting and presentation. This course is not focused on a particular field of political science, but instead examines the methods that political scientists (and other social scientists) in all fields use to understand the social world and build knowledge. Some of this research will have practical, applied implications for policy or political behavior, while some will seek a more conceptual or theoretical understanding of the political world. Ultimately, the course should help students develop a set of tools for methodological thinking that provide a unique perspective on the conduct of inquiry in the social world. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Pose focused research questions. 2. Select the research method best suited to collecting data to answer the research question. 3. Conceptualize, operationalize, and measure research variables. 4. Select the sampling method best suited to the research question and method of data collection. 5. Understand best practices for collecting data via the most commonly used research methods. 6. Select the data analysis process best suited to the research question and method of data collection. 7. Understand basic practices for conducting various types of data analysis. 8. Write and present research. 9. Apply this knowledge of research methods to better understanding and evaluating the research conducted by others (both academic and applied). 2 2 Fall 2017 POS 6736: Conduct of Inquiry IBM SPSS Statistics This course will use SPSS Statistics for data analysis, which is available on all computers in UF technology labs. To use SPSS elsewhere, you may purchase the software from the HUB for $35 for install on your personal computer (recommended), or access SPSS Statistics using UFApps (info.apps.ufl.edu). Course Requirements & Grading Weekly Attendance & Participation (10%): You should come to class prepared to comment on the weekly readings and participate in class discussion. Any absence from class requires explanation and a written make-up assignment related to the missed topic to avoid loss of points. Participation will account for 10% of your final grade. Projects (50% total): Five small research projects, detailed below, will account for 50% of your final grade (10% each). In some cases, you may select from several options depending on which is most applicable to your field of study (see Canvas for more details). Research Paper & Presentation (40% total): A fully-formed research project accounts for 40% of your final grade, including a preliminary topic submission and an in-class presentation of your work. You will use the skills acquired during the semester to choose a topic, form a research question, and determine the best research design (including measurement, sampling, data collection, data processing, and data analysis) to answer this question. This project should address an issue relevant to your field of study (a policy or management issue, a campaigning or political policy issue or directive, etc. at the local, state, national, or international level, as appropriate). You will present a short in-class summary of your work at the end of the semester. Readings, Attendance, & Participation You are responsible for completing all assigned readings before class, as this will facilitate your understanding of lectures and active participation in discussion. Class attendance is extremely important, and it is essential that you keep up with weekly readings and any assignments. This is not a typical seminar each week s material builds on the previous week, and each week s class time will include both lecture and discussion. I will provide supplemental required and recommended readings (in addition to those from your texts) as the semester progresses. Each week, the reading lists for the next week and a set of discussion questions to keep in mind as you complete the readings will be posted on Canvas. We will use these questions to initiate a classroom discussion of the readings and lecture materials. Students with disabilities requesting accommodations should first register with the Disability Resource Center ( , by providing appropriate documentation. Once registered, students will receive an accommodation letter which must be presented to the instructor when requesting accommodations. Students with disabilities should follow this procedure as early as possible in the semester. Projects Five small research projects will assess your understanding of several important topics. Research Background Project (Research Question & Literature Review) This project involves writing a proper, researchable question and conducting a review of the relevant literature regarding this question. Details will be provided on Canvas. Due September 13.

3 Measurement Project This project involves choosing a concept and detailing its basic meaning, dimensions, and properties; creating a conceptual definition; and, operationalizing that concept by creating or finding variables that are valid and reliable indicators of the concept in an accessible dataset. Details will be provided on Canvas. Due September 20. Qualitative Analysis Project This project involves collecting qualitative data (observational or interview data) in support of a broad research agenda. Details will be provided on Canvas. Due October 11. Research Proposal This formal proposal for your intended research paper should include a short literature review, as well as detailed explanations of the proposed research question and variable measurement, as well as the data to be used and proposed analyses which will be used to answer this question. Details will be provided on Canvas. Due October 25. Quantitative Analysis Project This project involves choosing an available secondary dataset (e.g. GSS, ANES, etc.) and performing a series of quantitative analyses in order to answer specific research questions. Details will be provided on Canvas. Due November 8. Research Paper & Presentation This project provides students with an opportunity to work through the research process from start to finish, applying the research design techniques learned in class to a research question of your choosing that addresses an issue relevant to your field of study (a policy or management issue, a campaigning or political policy issue or directive, etc. at the local, state, national, or international level, as appropriate). You will use the skills acquired during the semester to choose a topic, form a research question, determine the best research design, formulate hypotheses, find or gather data, conduct analyses, present and interpret the results, and provide recommendations based on your findings. In completing the research paper, students will: Identify a significant research question relevant to your field of study; Choose an appropriate dataset which includes needed variables (or collect primary data relevant to the issue, for all required concepts/variables); Conduct appropriate analyses based on the data and variables chosen to properly address the research question; The final paper should include a literature review, description of methodology and variables, (statistical) analysis, interpreted results, and conclusions with recommendations based on the findings; To insure that you remain on track, a paper proposal including your research question, proposed dependent and independent variables, and dataset choice is due by October 25 (Project #4, see 3 Fall 2017

4 above). However, I d recommend you begin this process as soon as possible for the best possible outcome. Further details will be provided on Canvas. The final research paper is due by December 10 (at noon) and in-class presentations are on the final day of class, December 6.
