1 UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, JAMAICA SYLLABUS OUTLINE FACULTY: Building and Land Mngt SCHOOL/DEPT: Built Environment COURSE OF STUDY: BSc in Quantity Surveying YEAR: 3 Semester 2 MODULE TITLE: Professional Internship MODULE CODE: DURATION: QUS Hours CREDIT VALUE: 8 PRE-REQUISITES: 3 rd year ALL SUBJECTS 1.0 MODULE DESCRIPTION As indicated in the degree programme document the internship course is intended to provide each student with the opportunity to observe and participate in many aspects of the practice quantity surveying and at the same time gain knowledge through hands on experience. Students must seek placement in approved organizations under the guidance of a Supervisor/Monitor (preferable a Chartered Quantity Surveyor/or a Professional Member of the Jamaica Institute of Quantity Surveyors). The student will be assigned a Students Log Book and Activity Assessment Plan (APPENDIX A) to record the hours and tasks he/or she has accomplished over the period of Internship. The Supervisor/Monitor would in turn date and sign the Log Book at fortnightly meetings with the student. During this time the Supervisor/Monitor would provide assessment of student. In addition the Supervisor/Monitor must insert the Qualitative Factor (qf) on the Students Activity Assessment Plan based on the notes provided in APPENDIX A (Item A and B). 1

2 Contact with the University is maintained by a staff visit and liaison with the Internship Coordinator/or Lecturer. In addition students/interns will be assigned to an Academic Supervisor from the Faculty. The Academic Supervisor will also provide guidance and mentoring during the internship process. 2.0 MODULE OBJECTIVES The course is designed to: Enable students to gain a solid work experience and learn how to apply the technical skills of quantity surveying learnt at university To obtain hands-on experience of the impact of new technology in the construction and quantity surveying industry To allow students to relate their academic studies to real-world career choices To enable students to develop important business and interpersonal skills enabling them to cope with the demands of full-time work 3.0 OBJECTIVES FOR EMPLOYERS To engage with academia and students and thereby participate in the education process and to improve the quality of prospective employees. 4.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES Students should be able to recognize the relevance and importance of all of the theories they have learned in the first two and half (2 ½ years) of study. Furthermore, students are provided with an experiential base to which final year studies can be related. 5.0 ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Item (1) Report Students must produce a report (not exceeding 2000 words), which will form part of their overall grade. The report should encompass the following: A reflection on the relationship between theory and practice 2

3 A reflection on the skills and knowledge acquired. For a detail breakdown and allocation of marks see APPENDIX B Report (50 marks) Item (2) Students Log Book The student is required to complete a total of 600 hours (maximum) in all activities (a) to (e) as listed in their Log Book and will be graded based on Activity Assessment Plan - APPENDIX A Students Log Book (50 marks) TOTAL (100 marks). 5 Notes on Qualitative Factor A The Qualitative Factor ranges from 1-5 with 5 being the highest B Qualitative assessment would be based on the following a) Ability to follow instructions accurately and expeditiously b) Level of professionalism demonstrated c) Interrelationship with staff, client and other individuals d) On the job conduct e) Deportment The final mark is determined based on the following formula: Score = wt x qf x hrs wt = weighting factor qf = qualitative factor hrs = Hours worked The Final Mark assigned to an Intern will be based on the amount obtained out of 6180 (percentage) 5
