1 Information for International applicants 2016 ENTRY The EIT Certificate in Horticulture is a one-year, 120 credit, full-time programme at Level 3 which provides an introduction to horticultural practices particularly for work in nurseries, garden centres, council departments, landscaping and vegetable production businesses. Students meeting the NZQA requirements can also obtain the National Certificate (Introductory) (Level 2) and (Level 3) as they are embedded within the Certificate in Horticulture programme. ENTRY CRITERIA The Certificate in Horticulture is an open entry Programme which means no formal academic qualifications are required. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on IELTS (5.0 Academic in all bands) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents or completion of an EIT assessment. ENTRY WITH CREDIT You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. SEMESTER TWO Semester Two Starts Monday, 18 July Term Three Holidays 26 September - 7 October Term Four Starts Monday, 10 October HB Anniversary Day Friday, 21 October Labour Day Monday, 24 October Programme Ends Friday, 25 November 2016 Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. Applications for RPL and Cross Credit for a course should be made prior to enrolment in that course and no later than two weeks after the start of the course. LITERACY AND NUMERACY SKILLS A literacy and numeracy assessment is part of the preparation for all levels one to three programmes. This is a national requirement from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). This information gives your tutors information on what you already know to help them provide the help that you may need in your studies. There are two assessments. The first assessment will take place within the first three weeks of the programme. The second will be a week or two before you finish the programme. This final assessment will show how you have improved with your Literacy and Numeracy skills.
3 There will always be a tutor to help you when doing the assessment. The most important thing to know about this assessment is that you CANNOT fail. You will merely get information on your literacy and numeracy skills. The result will NOT have an impact on any of your assessment marks in your course work. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS COURSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION CREDIT VALUE NZQA LEVEL SEMESTER OFFERED PSC3.43 AEN3.16 AEN3.06 HRT3.06 PSC3.01 PSC3.03 PSC3.49 PSC3.44 Garden Practice To develop skills in cultivating and maintaining amenity and potager gardens. Organic and conventional methods will be discussed and practiced. Students will be able to identify a range of annual and perennial plants and be aware of their cultural needs in the garden. Principles of weed management will be taught and students will select appropriate planned control options, and investigate agrichemical control methods as appropriate to the needs of the horticulture enterprise. Machinery Use and Servicing Identify a range of tools found in a horticultural and/or agricultural workshop, and be able to maintain those tools. Irrigation Fundamentals To provide students with knowledge of the different types of horticultural irrigation systems, and skills in performing irrigation maintenance involving cleaning, checking, maintaining and monitoring a horticultural irrigation system. Workplace Safety To provide students with an ability to manage emergency situations and provide basic first aid and resuscitation. Soil Properties To develop an understanding of the importance of soil processes, soil development, soil water, and soil properties in aiding and developing plant growth in horticultural/agricultural operation. Pests and Diseases To provide students with the ability to identify main types of pests, diseases and disorders, and to describe the life cycles of pests and diseases and their prevention and control. Horticultural Practice To develop an understanding of plant responses to pruning and training across a range of horticultural plants. Students will gain knowledge in plant naming and identification and turf culture. Plant Science To develop knowledge of plant structures and their functions; plant processes; and plant tissues and their functions. 15 2/3 Full Year /2/ /3 1 3 N/A /

Sustainable Horticultural Practice Students will become aware of sustainable practices that are applicable to horticulture, in particular, the usage of water, land use practice, organic soil practices, and native plant species. Soil Management To develop the ability to describe the roles of macro and micro nutrients; take soil sample tests; describe modification of soil physical, chemical and biological properties; identify the major forms of fertilizer and lime available to producers. Protected Growing To develop knowledge of how the greenhouse environment can be controlled to optimize plant growth. Students will learn to establish and maintain crops in a hydroponic growing system. Landscape Design To provide a background for people working in the field of landscape maintenance and garden centres for people who wish to study introductory landscape design in a residential context. Shelter and Weather To develop an understanding of the major benefits and factors involved in establishing effective shelter, and will be able to describe the importance of sustainable land use and the main forms and causes of erosion. You can also now apply online at 04 We will assess your application and let you know the outcome as soon as possible If you are accepted we will send you an Offer of Place along with details of the fees payable. If you do not meet all of the entry criteria we may issue you with a Conditional Offer of Place. You will need to meet all of the conditions as set out on your Offer of Place before you can apply for your Student Visa. 05 Pay your fees and apply for your Student Visa Once you have accepted your offer to study with us and paid your fees, we will send you a receipt that you will need to submit when applying for your visa. Details on applying for your Student Visa are available on the Immigration New Zealand website 06 Let us know your arrival details Once your visa has been approved you can then book your flights. Please let us know your arrival details whether you ll be living in EIT accommodation or not. If you are staying in EIT accommodation, we will arrange for you to be collected from the Napier airport for FREE.
