1 Digital Video Editing I-II Course Syllabus I. Teacher Contact Information Teacher: Mr. John Conant Address: Website: (click on the School Link) II. Course Description The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the basics of digital video editing. Students will learn the basics skills of Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. Students will also learn how to use digital video cameras, D-SLR cameras to input digital still pictures into videos, and output professional DVD s. Part of your class assignments will be to help record on the school s video cameras school events that take place during the school day (ie.-chapel, class room plays, pep rallys, speeches, etc.) You may also volunteer to film events outside of school (bonus points for filming outside of school hours). Students will help produce the videos posted to the school YouTube account. In addition to learning the skills necessary to perform basic digital video editing, students will be challenged to consider how their faith impacts and changes their use and production of technology and entertainment. Students will learn how to conduct interviews both the quick, short run and gun type and the longer formal interviews. III. Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of the course you will be able to: use Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X to create movie projects correctly use a digital video cameras, Canon Mini DV and Canon GL-2, Canon Vixia HD camera, JVC video cameras and Canon Rebel T3i and T5i HD cameras import video footage and still images from video cameras and digital still cameras use the ipad and imovie to film and create movies correctly organize all the assets needed to complete a movie project prepare video output for use in making a DVD and for use on the Web learn to correctly prepare for, conduct, film and produce interviews both the short run and gun and the longer formal interviews make a complete movie project using original footage-including writing a script, storyboarding, working with actors, filming, capturing, editing, producing a final movie, exporting and putting on a DVD, printing the DVD cover and making a jacket for a case. be able to apply Christian Integration in their project including o Technology in Modern Churches o Digital Video Editing as a Career. IV. Materials Provided Course material will be presented in class using Final Cut Pro X DVD. Notes will be provided in the form of study questions that will also be used to prepare for quizzes and tests over the Page 1

2 material. Material will be covered from the Video Coach DVD series produced by The Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting. There will be study questions from this material as well as quizzes and tests. Students will be provided with DVD s for use in creating final projects. Many projects will be created as QuickTime movie files for viewing in class and for grading. V. Materials Needed You will need folders for class materials, notes, handouts, etc. You will need a DVD to backup files that you want at the end of the class Video cameras may be borrowed for use at home (with the exception of the Canon Vixia and Rebel 3Ti cameras) upon the completion of the permission slip by your parents. You must also complete a permission slip before you can post any of your videos on YouTube. VI. Absences A. It is the student s responsibility to get work from the teachers. Assignments shall be made up within the same number of days missed. This includes weekend days. (ie. A student misses Monday-Thursday, receives make-up work on Friday. Make-up work is due on Tuesday.) B. Tests and quizzes should be made up on the day the student returns to school unless new material was presented during the student s absence. C. Students missing 7 day ( or 7 periods of the same class) per semester (14 per year) will result in a mandatory parent conference D. Students missing 10 days (or 10 periods of the same class) per semester will result in Academic Probation (individualized contract made with each student with parents and principal.) E. Students missing 12 days (or 12 periods of the same class) in the same semester will result in the student failing the class. Administration reserves the right to extend the absence count based on extreme circumstances. VII. Course Policies A. Make up/ late work Homework Completing homework is helpful for practicing and reinforcing skills or concepts being taught. It is important that each student completes his or her assigned work. It is also important that the work is brought to class the day and time it is due. In an effort to support the teaching of responsibility, students will not be allowed to call home for forgotten homework. Homework assignments turned in one day late will receive a 50% deduction from the earned grade. Homework turned in more than one day late will receive a zero. Project Policy Since projects are completed over an extended period of time, proper planning is essential to success. There is no excuse for projects to be turned in late. If a student is absent the day a project is due, the project must still be brought to school and turned in on time. Projects one day late 20% grade reduction Projects two days late 40% grade reduction Projects three days late zero score Test Policy If a student is absent on the day a test is given, the student is expected to make it up when he/she returns to school. If a student is absent a day of review, and returns to school on the day of the test, the student is expected to take the test unless new information was reviewed in the classroom on the date the student was absent. 3 B. Extra credit There will be online review quizzes that may be completed for bonus points in the homework area. During the course of the semester there may also be other areas of bonus that will be assigned to projects and other assignments. C. Extra Help Mr. Conant will be available for individual help on an as need basis. D. Honor Code Academic dishonesty is a serious offense. Students are expected to do their own work in and out of class. All assignments, projects, tests, quizzes, and exams are designed to measure students understanding and any action that compromises that assessment is a breach of the Honor Code. Examples of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to: 1) Copying any part of another s test, quiz, homework, project, worksheet or report 2) Using or turning in another person s work in part or in entirety 3) Using or appearing to look at review sheets, notes, or any other information not permitted during tests, quizzes or exams 4) Not following directions given by the teacher such as using a calculator or other materials instructed not to use. 5) Any communication with another student during a test, quiz or exam or about a quiz, test or exam that they have already taken 6) Plagiarize or use the ideas and/or writing of another without giving credit to the original author. The only information that can be used without documenting the source is information that would be considered common knowledge (for example, that George Washington was the first president of the United States). 7) Using an electronic device to store or communicate information to be used while taking a test, quiz or exam. 8) Using any of the above methods to assist another in being dishonest academically. Usually students who violate the Honor Code will receive a zero on the assignment or test and will serve a Saturday School or suspension because it is a level three offense. Any further violation during middle school/high school will result in an out-of-school suspension and possible expulsion. Violations of the Honor Code are determined by the staff member who observes or discovers the infraction, by the student s admission, or by at least two witnesses who observe the incident. The principal and the staff member involved will then meet with the student and notify the parents of the violation and consequences. E. 4 Tests and Projects 50% Quizzes 20% Homework/Daily work in class 20% Excellence 10% Explanation of Excellence 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, So whether your eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Scripture consistently teaches Christians to live and act with excellence. This means not simply meeting the minimum requirements, but completing a task to the best of your ability, using all of your heart, soul and mind (cf. Matt. 22:37). Therefore, the term excellence will refer to the quality of work and general participation of every student. This may include but is not limited to such things as preparation for class, classroom participation and attitude, and staying on task. F. Class Expectations: - In addition to the standard Computer and Internet Use guidelines, students will be expected to abide by the following regulations: o Always handle the laptops with care. Excessive carelessness will not be tolerated, and students will be responsible for any resulting damage (to be handled on a caseby-case basis). o Do not use any inappropriate material in your projects (including text, video or audio-music lyrics must be approved by Mr. Conant). o Only log on to your specified laptop with your account. Do not give out your password to anyone. o Stay on task with teacher instructions and classroom assignments. No surfing with Safari during class unless you are assigned a task that requires the use of the Internet. o Shut down your computer and return it to the cart before the end of class bell rings. Late passes will not be given for untimely students. o For videos that will be posted on the Web be sure to use public domain music. - Students are expected to be respectful and courteous at all times to both to the teacher and each other. Disruptions will be handled promptly on a case-by-case basis. - All students are expected to arrive to class on time and to be prepared. G. Classroom Procedures: 1. When you come to class log onto your computer and check you class Website for assignments. 2. Use the Web and cell phones for school purposes only. 3. Be sure to use your class time to complete DVE work before you work on other school related assignments. 4. You will be provided with a user name and password. Do not change either of these and do not give them to anyone else. You will be responsible for what tasks are completed on your computer under that user name and password. 5. 5 Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord Laptops may be used during the class period, or during a student s study hall period, if all of the following apply: The student has all class work completed, or there is an upcoming Video Editing project due The laptop is not being used by another Video Editing student in class. The student has received prior written permission from Mr. Conant with a pass issued. The MacBook Pro is not to be used by students not in the DVE class. H. Methods: Methods utilized to relate the content and objectives of this course will include the following: 1. Lecture and demonstration of principles covered in each Lesson of the textbook using FCP training video footage. (20%) 2. Question and answer time using the objective review material completed over each lesson.er. (10%) 3. Discussion of video and movie terms and concepts and techniques used to produce great movies. (10%) 4. Completion of movies projects using the Final Cut Pro skills learned in class and practiced from the video footage provided in the course files. (50%) 5. Discussion of current events in the digital video editing field with computer related articles from the news media or the Internet. (5%) 6. Integration of Final Cut Pro skills and real life movie production including movies made for Christian organizations. (5%) I. Topics to be covered (not necessarily in this order) Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut X Material to be covered (not necessarily in this order) Introduction to the Mac, Getting Organized, Getting Started, Learning the Interface, Building Your Story, Using Subclips, Using Markers, Organizing Your Story, Trimming Your Story, Multiclip Editing- Using Plural Eyes, Using Transitions, Editing Audio, Mixing Audio, Importing, Exporting, Managing Media Using a Digital Video Camera-Canon Vixia, and Canon Rebel T3i and T5i D- SLR cameras Correct use of camera, Capturing the shots, Camera angles, Use of Tripod, Handling and Storing DV tape, Planning shots by using story boarding, Use of Actors, Composing Video Shots, etc. Organizing and Completing a Video Project Starting with written idea, Planning and Getting the Video, Capturing the Video and Stills, Producing the Movie with Adobe Premiere Pro CC and FCX, Outputting the Movie as a QuickTime File, Making the DVD, and Printing the DVD and the Case Page 5
