1 POST TITLE: Curriculum Team Leader: Physical Education RESPONSIBLE TO: Headteacher DATE: January 2015 JOB DESCRIPTION SALARY RANGE MPR 4 - UPR 3+ TLR 1b This job description makes reference to the post holder's leadership and employment at Wellsway School and the Wellsway Multi-Academy Trust. Leadership to: 1.1 ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students studying Physical Education, in accordance with the aims of the school and under the direction of the Governing Body and Headteacher; 1.2 raise standards of student attainment and achievement in Physical Education; 1.3 take the strategic lead in the promotion of Physical Education across the curriculum at Wellsway School; 1.4 promote excellence and the consistency of high quality provision for all students through the strategic leadership and management of Teaching and Learning with a particular focus on Physical Education; 1.5 be accountable for student progress within Physical Education; 1.6 take a strategic lead in developing collaborative partnerships, with schools and other organisations; 1.7 play a role in the leadership and management of the school as a member of the school s middle leadership team. Staff and Team Development. To: 2.1 be accountable for leading, managing, and developing the subject area; 2.2 To be available to disseminate best practice across the Multi-Academy Trust; 2.3 ensure that there are robust monitoring and support systems within Physical Education to enable rapid and sustained student progress; 2.4 develop and enhance the teaching and learning in Physical Education within the Curriculum Team; 2.5 effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within the Curriculum Team; 2.6 ensure that all staff are adequately trained in the delivery and understanding of Physical Education by leading and organising INSET on teaching and learning in order to enable good practice; 2.7 ensure that teaching and learning for all groups of students is of high quality within Physical Education and ensures that the school s inclusion agenda is met.
2 Wider Strategic Responsibilities. To: 3.1 assist with the promotion of consistently high quality teaching and learning to ensure inclusive provision through leadership, management, development and systematic implementation of pedagogy; 3.2 maintain a strong sense of teamwork and collective responsibility; 3.3 act as a key member of the school s middle leadership and play a full part in the life of the school community, supporting its distinctiveness and encouraging all stakeholders to follow this example; 3.4 monitor and intervene appropriately to ensure the provision of an outstanding curriculum for all students and to challenge weakness and low standards in meeting the needs of students; 3.5 assist in the Performance Management process and contribute to monitoring and evaluating allocated curricular or pastoral areas in line with agreed school procedures, including evaluation against quality standards and performance criteria; 3.6 Establish a fair, transparent and working ethos in which creativity and innovation are valued and encouraged. Teaching and Learning (Physical Education and whole school). To: 4.1 ensure that curricular or pastoral areas to which you are assigned provide the highest standards of excellence; 4.2 identify and promote highly effective teaching and learning strategies in order to raise attainment and progress; 4.3 lead and encourage a learning experience so that every student reaches her/his potential; 4.4 monitor teaching and learning activities to meet the needs of all students; 4.5 identify areas for staff development and contribute to whole school improvement initiatives; 4.6 liaise with other curriculum teams and schools to ensure that good practice is shared; 4.7 encourage all members of staff to recognise and fulfil their statutory responsibilities by setting the highest personal and professional standards; 4.8 provide training opportunities for all who work in the classroom in order to promote excellence in teaching and learning; 4.9 identify resources needed to meet the needs of all students and advise the Headteacher on priorities for expenditure; 4.10 maintenance of Professional Standards as identified in the Teachers Standards, particularly keeping fully appraised and aware of educational and other appropriate developments whether national or local, and assess their impact on the school and the team for which you are responsible; 4.11 ensure the highest standards of professional conduct and confidentiality at all times, and, in particular, when with other staff of the school; 4.12 ensure the development and maintenance of a team culture that enables all members of the School Leadership Team to be effective in their respective roles; 4.13 ensure the development and maintenance of a collaborative culture which demonstrates loyalty and integrity towards the school and colleagues; 4.14 uphold the school s policies and procedures; 4.15 develop links with governors, neighbouring schools and other relevant local and national agencies; 4.16 be approachable and professional at all times;
3 Strategic/Core Responsibilities Physical Education. To: Operational/Strategic Planning: 5.1 lead the development of specifications, resources, schemes of work, marking policies, assessment and teaching and learning strategies in Physical Education; 5.2 oversee day-to-day management, control and operation of course provision within the Physical Education team, including effective deployment of staff and physical resources; 5.3 actively monitor and follow up student progress working within both Curriculum Team and pastoral structures; 5.4 lead the Physical Education Curriculum Team in the production of strategic plans for Physical Education which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, outcomes and strategic plans of the school; 5.5 support and fully implement School s Policies and Procedures. Curriculum Provision: 5.6 ensure that the curriculum fully reflects the School s distinctive ethos and mission in consultation with appropriate members of the SLT, ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and cost effective curriculum; 5.7 be accountable for the day-to-day delivery of Physical Education; Curriculum Development: 5.8 lead on the development of an innovative and enriched curriculum for Physical Education; 5.9 make sure that the school and the Curriculum Team are kept up to date with national developments in Physical Education; 5.10 actively monitor and respond to curriculum development initiatives at national, regional and local levels. Staff Development. To: CPD: 6.1 work with the SLT to ensure that staff development needs are identified and that appropriate programmes are implemented; 6.2 be responsible for the efficient and effective deployment of staff within the Physical Education Curriculum Team; 6.3 assist with making appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent, ensuring cover within the Curriculum Team by liaising with the Cover Supervisor/relevant staff; 6.4 participate in the interview process for teaching posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with school procedures; 6.5 participate in school s ITT programme including the mentoring of NQTs and PGCE students as appropriate. Quality Assurance. To:
4 6.7 ensure a robust process of setting targets within Physical Education and to work towards their achievement; 6.8 establish common standards of practice within Physical Education and develop consistency across the Curriculum Team; 6.9 contribute to the school s procedures for staff review as part of the on-going evaluation of learning and teaching; 6.10 ensure that Physical Education quality procedures are robust and understood by all respond to issues raised by the school s annual self-evaluation processes. Management Information. To: 7.1 make use of analysis and evaluate performance data; 7.2 identify and take appropriate action on issues arising from data analysis and reports reviewing progress on the action taken; 7.3 produce reports on examination performance, including the use of progress data; 7.4 provide the Governing Body with relevant information relating to the performance and development of Physical Education. Communications. To: 8.1 ensure that all members of the Physical Education team are familiar with its aims and objectives; 8.2 ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with the parents via the website and other communication methods; 8.3 liaise with partner schools, Higher Education, Industry, Examination Boards, Awarding Bodies and other relevant external bodies; 8.4 represent the views and interests of Physical Education at whole school level. Management of Resources. To: 9.1 manage the available resources of space, staff, money and equipment efficiently within the limits, guidelines and procedures laid down; including deploying the Curriculum Team s budget, acting as a cost centre holder, requisitioning, organising and maintaining equipment and stock, and keeping appropriate records; 9.2 create a positive, stimulating and changing learning environment for students. Other Duties and Responsibilities. To: 10.1 play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its distinctive mission and ethos and to encourage and ensure staff and students to follow this example; 10.2 be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people; 10.3 be aware of and support difference to help ensure that everyone has equal access to the services of the school and feels valued, respecting their social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic background; 10.4 attend and participate in meetings as required; 10.5 contribute to Performance Management and to act as reviewer for a group of staff; 10.6 engage actively in the performance review process; 10.7 ensure that all members of the staff familiar with the schools wider aims and objectives;
