2 Introduction This guide aims to give you helpful information which will allow you and your child to work together for success in the mock exams. The guide contains detailed revision lists for the core subjects, taken by all students: English Language, Mathematics, Science and RS. Please pick up the revision lists for your child s option subjects during the parents information evening on the 8 th October. This information will also be published on the Academy s website in the exams section. Please work with your child, using this information, to create a thorough revision timetable using the advice and the template on pages 13 and 14 as a guide. We will continually update the Academy s website with revision materials and the latest information about exams. We will also use Connect to post revision materials as part of your child s homework. We hope that you will find this useful and we do value your feedback on both of these means of communication. If at any point in the year you are concerned about your child s progress, please contact us as soon as possible. 12 Creating a Revision Timetable How much time is needed? Our expectation at OSVA is that Year 11 students will spend ten hours per week on their revision. Clearly, some students will want to do more, however, we don t recommend more than twelve hours revision at this point or students will burn out too quickly. On the other hand, research and experience shows that fewer than eight hours will have a detrimental impact on students chances of success in their GCSEs. Instructions for using the revision timetable pro forma: 1. For ten hours per week, first decide on eight of the sessions on the timetable when you are not going to revise. Make sure you include time for regular activities in your life. Blank out these eight non revision sessions on the timetable. 2. Use the revision lists to work out how many sessions you will need for each of your subjects. Number each of these sessions on the revision list. 3. Put these sessions with their number onto the timetable. 4. Make copies of the timetable. Have one where you will be revising (if this is in different places, put copies in each place or have a revision folder that you know you will have with you) and make sure that people supporting you have a copy too. 5. Start revising! Cross off each session as you complete it on both your revision timetable and your revision list. 12
