2 A message from your English Language Arts and Reading Team: We are so excited to support you in any way that we can! All of our training sessions are based on the idea that all students can learn, and we embrace the idea of using demonstration lessons as well as authentic text and media to help our participants enhance their instruction. All of our sessions target critical success factors such as improving academic performance, increasing learning time, and enhancing teacher quality. Foldables are interactive, research-based, graphic organizers that will transform the way you teach and the way your students learn and study. Discover how to use foldables to emphasize differentiation and specially designed instruction for students receiving special education services, integrate learning techniques and immerse students into visual and kinesthetic learning styles as they organize information to achieve more personal and authentic learning. During the training participants will make their own examples and learn strategies for implementing this powerful and effective learning tool. Foster s book How to Read Literature Like a Professor. In this session we will explore the layers of meaning hidden in the context of symbols, allusions, themes, motifs, and more. Participants will also acquire tools to help students develop their critical thinking skills while discovering the joy of reading on a deeper level. Participants will receive a copy of the text. 4

6 Unlocking Meaning Students ability to read on grade level with high levels of thinking does not happen by chance. Through this series of modules, participants will learn how to build students ability to think deeper as they read to learn. The modules will begin at the word level to strengthen decoding of complex text and will build up to the highest levels of comprehension (Figure 19): making inferences, summarizing, and synthesizing.
