1 Body Systems Project Students will work in groups to research one of the eleven body systems. Research will focus on the structures and function of the major organs in the assigned body system. Each group will be responsible for a visual aid to be used in a presentation to the class. In addition, each individual in a group will be responsible for researching and presenting information on one disease or interesting fact associated with their assigned body system. Primary Learning Outcomes - Students will be able to discuss in detail one body system(s) and its function - Students will be able to identify the organs and structural parts present in that system - Students will be able to describe the basic structure of the major organs in that system - Students will recognize different diseases and current research associated with the body system Presentation Your presentation can take any form you wish. Some suggestions include: commercial, body system costume, poster, drawings, full body system cut-out, video, animation, power point, app, web page, other (with approval from Ms. Depooter) Your presentation must include the following: Part 1: Introduction Tell the name of your organ system and describe the major functions Part 2: Worksheet with Diagram Provide a diagram of your body system with the major parts or organs labeled with their name and function Part 3: Teamwork Explain how your body system works with other systems in the body Part 4: Facts and Diseases Find at least 5 facts/diseases about your body system (1 fact, 4 diseases 4 facts, 1 disease) Each team will be provided with some body system information (checklist and possible questions to consider) that should be included in the presentation. Teams may use their text books, internet or other resources to research their organ system. The presentation must include a visual aid (poster, video, power point, etc). Introduction - Did you provide the name of your organ system? - Did you give descriptions of the major functions of your system? Diagram - Did you provide a diagram of your body system with the major parts or organs labeled? - Did you give descriptions of the functions of each organ? Teamwork - Did you share examples and give descriptions of interactions with other body systems? Facts/Diseases - Did you provide five facts/diseases (or more) about your body system or its parts? Other Information - Did you include all the information listed on your Body System Checklist? Worksheet - Did the worksheet include a diagram and the functions of each part of the body system? Presentation - Did you have at least 3 minutes and at most 5 minutes worth of information to present? - Did you have a visual aid to enhance your presentation - Was the information presented in an organized manner? - Did you know the information? You should know the information well enough that you do not need to read it word-for-word off note cards, a paper or the screen - Did you present to the class? (faced the class when presenting) - Did you practice? Be sure to run through your presentation a few times before you present to the class! Group Involvement - Did everyone share responsibilities for preparing the presentation? - Did everyone participate in giving the presentation? - Did you work together and resolve problems peacefully?

3 Muscular System: - 3 types of muscle (picture and definition of each. - What are tendons and what do they do? - What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles? (Give examples of each type) - Each time you move some muscles contract and some relax. On a picture show which muscles contract and relax when you move a certain way. Skeletal System: picture of compact and spongy bone. - Picture which shows which bones are in the axial and appendicular skeleton - What organs do your skull and ribs protect? Nervous System: - What do nerves do? example of autonomic and voluntary nervous system. - Picture which labels the Central and Peripheral nervous system. Respiratory System: - What gas does the respiratory system inhale? Exhale? - Picture which labels the lungs, diaphragm, mouth, nose, throat, and bronchial tubes. - Either on a picture or in words describe the path that air takes through the respiratory system beginning with the mouth and ending in the lungs.

4 Circulatory System: - What is blood pressure? - Why is it bad if blood pressure it too high? Too low? picture of veins, capillaries, and arteries. - Use picture and words to trace how blood flows through the circulatory system. Digestive System: - Picture with organs labeled example of mechanical and chemical digestion. - Describe with a picture and words the pathway that food takes through the digestive system (starting with mouth and ending with excretion out of the body). Integumentary System: - Picture of skin labeling: sweat glands, oil glands, hair, muscle, nerve receptor, sensory receptor, epidermis, dermis, fatty tissue. - How do you keep your skin healthy and what things can you do to protect it from extreme cold and heat? - What are the 5 sensory receptors in your skin? Immune System: - What are antibodies and what do they do? - What causes a fever in your body? - What do white blood cells do? - What 3 other body systems act as a line of defense to also protect your body and how do they do this?

5 Endocrine System: - What are hormones? picture of positive and negative feedback. - What is homeostasis? Urinary System: - What do your kidneys do? - What are nephrons and where are they located? - Picture and words to describe the order liquid waste travels through the urinary system Reproductive System: - What cells do the male and female reproductive systems produce? - Where does fertilization take place? - What is menstruation (in scientific terms). - Picture labeling the male and female reproductive systems
