3 WELCOME TO KEY STAGE 4 Key Stage 4 is a period of rapid change for students, socially, physically and emotionally. We aim to nurture and inspire our students to give their best effort in all that they do. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is based upon the British National Curriculum, adapted to Indonesian and International learning opportunities. The curriculum aims to provide breadth, depth and balance, challenging all students to meet their academic potential through the acquisition of knowledge and the progression of skills. Key Stage 4 provides a stable platform for future learning in the examination years. In addition to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, students may study History, Geography, Art, Music, Computing, PE and Personal Development Studies. Learning in Key Stage 4 supports: The varied learning styles of students Investigation and problem solving Enquiry Independence Collaborative learning Self- reflection and target setting Communication skills. JCS strives to provide academic excellence for all students but also recognizes its crucial responsibility in encouraging the personal development of students; students who value the school and wider community and seek opportunities to demonstrate the aspects of the JCS values. This guide provides useful information on all aspects of the Key Stage 4 program at JCS which we hope will support both parents and students this academic year. REPORTING AND AT KEY STAGE 4 Assessment of student s work over the Key Stage is based on the teacher s overall assessment of a student s actual attainment at this particular stage of the course, taking school work, homework and examinations into account. JCS partner with Wolsey Hall for all content and assignments for English, Maths and Science. Students are taught, supported and their work marked by our on-site teachers. For all other subjects JCS teaching staff will develop, deliver and mark all courses in line with the British National Curriculum. Throughout the Key Stage parents will receive formal reports to enable them to monitor attitude, progress and attainment of their child/children. They will also have the opportunity to meet and discuss specific aspects of their students work with teachers at Parent/ Teacher meetings. 3

4 SECONDARY HOMEWORK POLICY Homework is compulsory when set and considered to be an important aspect of the educational process. It is valued for the following reasons: It can help students to make more rapid progress in their learning. It allows students to consolidate their learning by practising skills. It promotes independent learning and thinking. It encourages students to use a wide range of sources of information, not always available in the classroom. It can involve parents and others in the student s learning and development. It facilitates course requirements, e.g. Coursework at Key Stage 4 and at A-levels. JCS has based our guidelines for homework provision on current recommendations in international and private schools globally. Key Stage 4 (students are expected to complete hours of homework per week) Year 10: Year 11: Maximum 1.5 to 2 hours per night Maximum 1.5 to 2.5 hours per night Show My Homework is an online homework calendar the school uses to ensure homework is set and communicated with parents across the school. Teachers will use it to set homework and ensure that learners and parents always have the information they need about homework available via the Web, Mobile and Tablet devices. Homework can be accessed by teachers, students and parents in the following ways: Please go to jogjakarta.showmyhomework.co.uk - There is no login required to see the school homework calendar. You can see homework that is set across the school and then use the filters to find what you are looking for. A personalised homework calendar is available for all users including students and parents. Once you login, you can only see your own homework schedule. There are iphone and Android apps available for free for students and parents. The role of the student: To listen to homework instructions in class. To visit the school homework calendar via the school website. To download the Apple or Android app if they have a smart phone to see their homework. To ensure that homework is completed and handed in to meet the deadline. To attempt all work and give their best. To inform the class teacher of any difficulties. The role of the Parents: The role of the parent is crucial if a child is to gain success from homework. To reinforce its value through positive feedback will give students the confidence to persevere, work hard and reach high standards of achievement. Parents can assist by: Providing a table, chair and a quiet place to work. Negotiating with the student when homework is to be done as a student's free play is important too. Checking the time spent on individual tasks. Ensuring that outside clubs do not hamper a child's quality of work and put a child under undue pressure. 4

5 Providing the school with information about any problems their child may be having with homework. COMPUTERS AND THE NETWORK All Secondary students are required to bring a personal laptop to school each day. The laptops are an essential part of the how the students access and complete their learning tasks. Expectations regarding student behaviour are outlined below: All students are required to observe the following rules for computer use: I will only log on using my own username and password, not someone else s. I will respect other people s work and not interfere with another person s files in their directory. I will only access data from, CD ROMs or USB keys if I am given permission. I am not permitted to install any software, including games on any school computer. I will not do anything to cause damage to the computers or change the data stored on them. I am not permitted to play games during school hours. Using s: I will only send s that do not annoy, insult, offend or attack other people. I will not give any contact details (address, phone number) or make arrangements to meet anyone using without my parents permission. If I receive any s that upset and offend me, I will tell a teacher straight away. Using the Internet: I will not access any Internet sites that I would be embarrassed for a teacher or my mother/father to see. If I access anything that I am unhappy with I will tell a teacher straight away. I will not download games or music from the Internet. I will respect other people s copyright and not download text written by someone else to use as my own. Monitoring: I understand if I deliberately break these rules I can be stopped from using computers at school. The school may exercise its right to check the use of the network facilities by monitoring access to web sites, intercept and delete inappropriate material where unauthorised use is believed to take place to ensure that the rules above are being followed. These rules have been designed to create a safe environment for me to access the Internet and use the computers for learning. SECONDARY UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS We expect the students at JCS to be proud of their uniform and take pride in their appearance. We have a school uniform because we want our students to feel they belong to a school which judges them on what they say and do and not by how they dress. We expect students to comply 5

6 with our uniform policy and keep their uniform smart and clean. We ask for the support of parents in ensuring that the uniforms made and provided for their children are consistent with these expectations. CURRICULUM At KS4, in addition to their core subjects, students will now have the opportunity to select the electives that they wish to pursue. Students are also given opportunities to produce a number of these text types throughout the course. Students will complete assignments at regular intervals during the course. These assignments are designed to be completed after a module or unit of work has been finished. These are a key part of the learning process and will enable JCS teachers, as well as parents, to gauge each student s progress throughout the course. In IGCSE First Language English, students sit for the Final Examination which consists of Paper 2 (reading passages) and Paper 3 (directed writing and composition), and are equally weighted. There is also a speaking and listening component, which is marked as a separate examination. In IGCSE English as a Second Language, students sit for the Final Examination which consists of Paper 2 (reading and writing) and Paper 4 (listening), and are weighted 70% and 30% respectively.
