1 Curse Outline 2018 MGMT 211: UNDERSTANDING ORGANISATIONS (15 POINTS) Summer Schl (90236) Curse Prescriptin Understanding rganisatins is essential in tday s business envirnment. This curse cnsiders rganisatins frm three levels: envirnments; frmal and infrmal structures; and peple, as individuals and in teams. It recgnises and explres rganisatinal issues that cut acrss levels, including change, cntrl, pwer, and cnflict. Begins t develp critical appraches and skills in rganisatinal analysis. Prgramme and Curse Advice Prerequisite: BUSINESS 102 r MGMT 101 r 30 pints in Anthrplgy r Scilgy Gals f the Curse This curse seeks t develp students understanding f rganisatins in three ways: Knwledge: Thrugh understanding the majr theries, therists, and perspectives f rganisatinal thery and behaviur, the student shuld be able t apply these theries t situatins, bth artificial and frm the student s wn experience, in rder t 1) analyse the causes f the situatin, and 2) t critically evaluate the effectiveness f relevant theretical interventins and their likely utcmes. Skills: T further the student s develpment f cnstructing a cherent argument in the frm f academic essays that presents the student s psitin n rganisatinal issues. T develp the student s skill t think critically abut rganisatinal theries and prblems. Attitudes: The student shuld be prepared fr class and engage in discussins; the student shuld share their ideas and interpretatins f rganisatinal issues, and be able t critically analyse differing perspectives. Furthermre, they shuld be able t cnsider the cntemprary rganisatinal envirnment and develp a perspective n the relevance f rganisatinal thery within this cntext. Learning Outcmes By the end f this curse students shuld be able t: 1. Identify the majr therists f rganisatinal thery and behaviur; 2. Select theries and perspectives, apprpriate t the cntext invlved, in rder t apply thse theries; 3. Apply these theries and perspectives t situatins, bth artificial and frm the student s wn experience, in rder t predict the likely utcme f the situatin; 4. Critically evaluate situatins, using these theries and perspectives, in rder t identify apprpriate interventins; 5. Given situatins, as in 3 abve, make reasnable and apprpriate assumptins and inferences; 6. Identify lgical incnsistencies in the student s wn reasning;
2 7. Assess the scial and ethical implicatins f these theries and perspectives, and is able t defend their chice f actins n these grunds; 8. Cmpare and cntrast theries and perspectives, and thus evaluate their applicability t situatins. By relating theries and perspectives t ne anther is able t make links amng theretical schls. Thus, the student is able t develp a critique f theries and perspectives; 9. Cnstruct cherent academic essays that demnstrate the student s psitins and ratinale n rganisatinal issues, in demnstrating the set f learning bjectives. Learning and Teaching There are fur hurs f class per week. This is brken dwn int tw, tw-hur sessins. Classes will explre aspects f curse cntent and may include discussins, applicatin f cncepts, varius exercises and activities, and additinal assistance with internal assessment tasks. The curse readings will assist yu with develping critical arguments supprted by a sund theretical basis. 2

Assessment Assessment Structure Weekly Multi- Chice Questin Tests Details The purpse f these tests are t assess yur knwledge f the weekly reading materials and help ensure yur readiness fr class discussin and activities. Weeks 2 6 inclusive. Yu must cmplete each test by each 4pm. Tests are administered thrugh Canvas. Weighting 10% ttal Five tests wrth 2% each Team Assignment In teams f 4 6 yu will submit a 10 minute vide presentatin that examines the tpic f Mtivatin. Further instructins are available n Canvas. Teams will be frmed in-class during ur first sessin: 9-11am, Friday 5 January. Please nte: While teams fr this assignment will be frmed in ur first class, yu will nt be required t sit with each ther/wrk tgether during rdinary class sessins (unless, f curse, yu wish t!). Due date: Mnday 22 4pm. 15% Individual Essay Yu will submit a 1,500-wrd essay that examines the tpic f Fundatins f Grup Behaviur. Assignments must be typed using standard A4 paper size Standard Micrsft Wrd settings f 2.5 margins right and left hand side are acceptable. Fully justified paragraphs are als requested (as ppsed t leftr right-aligned) 1.5 line spacing is required 12pt Times New Rman, Arial, r Calibri are the best fnts Fllwing APA citing/referencing stlye, each assignment must cntain in-text citatins and a cmplete reference list. Refer t Write that Essay fr referencing and stylistic help. Als, APA style advice can be fund here: Submit an electrnic cpy t CANVAS (see the Assignments tab n Canvas) N paper cpy submissins are accepted. Digital submissin nly. All submissins are checked thrugh the Turnitin sftware (embedded within Canvas Assignments ) Late Assignments In the interests f fairness t all, students are required t submit assignments n time, s a 15% penalty per day will be applied t late assignments. The need t submit an assignment late is, hwever, recgnised where there is sufficient evidence based n medical r cmpassinate grunds. Such extensins shuld be requested by the required hand-in date. It shuld be nted that the amunt f time that can be awarded fr such extensins is limited in a six-week summer schl curse. Cheating and Plagiarism The University f Auckland regards cheating as a serius academic ffence. Plagiarism is a frm f cheating.
