SAEs shuld relate t what the student is learning in class. Planning a SAE can help the student s prject meet their bjectives by defining what has t be dne. 2. Develped: SAEs shuld reflect the agricultural and career interests f a student. SAEs shuld als utilize the resurces available t the student. 3. Managed: Recrds shuld be carefully kept n SAEs in rder t evaluate the prgress and perfrmance f the student, bth financially and educatinally 4. Supervised: Agriculture teachers shuld supervised and prvide help during all stages f the student s SAE. Teachers shuld bserve and assess a student s SAE thrughut the duratin f the activity and prvide cnstructive feedback. Explratry SAE: allws students t have a wide range f experiences. This type f SAE helps students learn what they want t study mre in depth. By explring many areas, students can make better chices abut educatin and careers. Thrugh explratry SAEs students can understand and appreciate the field f agriculture. The nly investment needed by a student fr an Explratry SAE is TIME. Examples: jb shadwing, researching a career, attending a fair/sale, visiting a lcal agriculture peratin, etc. Jb shadwing: bserving the wrk f an experienced persn. Imprvement SAE: usually invlve hme r cmmunity wrk. They may be grup r individual prjects that cntribute t the agricultural knwledge and/r skill f a student, and are usually unpaid. Examples: cnstructing livestck pens, landscaping the hme, renvating a lawn, r vlunteering at a farmer s market. Placement SAE: a student is emplyed fr cmpensatin r t gain experience. The purpse is t prvide practical experience and develp skills needed t enter and advance in a particular ccupatin. The lcatin where the student wrks is called the training lcatin. The majr investment made by the student is time. Examples: wrking at a flwer shp, assisting a lcal veterinarian, emplyed at a mechanic shp, etc. Entrepreneurial and Ownership SAE: an enterprise wned and perated in agriculture r a related area by the student. The materials and input are wned by the student, and the risk f wnership falls n the student. The key is that the student assumes all financial respnsibility fr their prject. This type f SAE requires an investment f time and mney by students. The main gals are t earn a prfit and learn! Examples: raising livestck, raising and selling plants, perating a lawn care business, grwing and selling crps, etc. Research and Experimentatin SAE (AgriScience): students learn by fllwing the scientific methd in search f an answer. This experience invlves students identifying prblems, searching fr infrmatin, and then cnducting a scientific experiment r research prcedures t arrive at cnclusins. Students may cperate with the science teacher r scientists in the lcal cmmunity t cmplete this experience. Time is ften the nly investment required by a student, as the supplies are prvided by the schl r wh they wrk with. If students d invest their wn mney, they shuld keep recrds f their expenses. Examples: wrking with a fd scientist n prjects, cllecting and testing water samples, testing rates f fertilizer applicatin, testing different livestck feed ratins, using different prpagatin techniques n plants, etc. Ptential SAE Tpic Areas Animal Systems Agribusiness Systems Envirnmental Service Systems Fd Prducts and Prcessing Systems Natural Resurce Systems Plant Systems Pwer, Structural, and Technical Systems **Fr additinal ideas visit:
