1 LA SALLE UNIVERSITY AND REGIONAL TRAINING CENTER Three-Credit Graduate courses for K-12 Teachers Fall 2017 TUITION INFORMATION: $ for a three (3) credit course. All courses listed below are 3 Graduate Credits Anne Arundel County Public Schools will forward payment to RTC for $ (3 credit course) for teachers who successfully complete the course with a grade of B or better. This course will count towards the maximum of six credits for which the county will reimburse teachers per year. The registrant must pay $600 if eligible for reimbursement. Please consult the RTC website for important book and policy changes. Off-Campus Courses Courses starting on a Saturday will meet for two Saturdays and two Sundays: 8:00 AM - 4:45 PM with an online component after the last meeting date except where indicated. Online Classes Participants who have taken a face-to-face version of a course cannot register for the online version of the same course. Note: Participants are required to sign in to the online course within the first 2 days of the published class start date. Pre-registration is required You may register by calling or online at COURSE: BRAIN-BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING Neuroscience research on how the brain learns and processes information will be examined, with an emphasis on the functions of the senses, working memory, long-term memory, storage and retrieval, and the development of self-concept. How and when to present new information, techniques to improve processing and retention, left/right brain preferences and promoting higher-level thinking will also be explored. COURSE: COOPERATIVE DISCIPLINE

2 Shift the discipline paradigm from controlling student behavior through rewards and punishment to helping all students make better choices. Structured around researchbased school success factors, course content identifies the four goals of misbehavior, builds positive classroom climate, and presents multiple strategies to use at the moment misbehaviors occur. Course Number: EDM 540-G53 Dates: Sep 11 Nov 5 COURSE: DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION Study Carol Ann Tomlinson s framework for designing effective instruction that responds to the needs of all learners using learning style, interest, and level of readiness. This course will investigate the theory, rationale, and principles of Differentiated Instruction and apply them to the classroom setting. Examine each style and organizational preference, as well as the needs of each type in the classroom. Issues relating to teaching, learning, classroom management, communication, conflict resolution, esteem building, and problem solving will be applied to classroom situations.

COURSE: THE BULLY PROOF CLASSROOM Bullying is an important issue facing families, schools, communities, and society. Understand the issues and develop strategies to address the problem. Examine socialization curriculum and gain an awareness of bullying behavior, the reaction of the victim, the responsibility of bystanders, and how to create a bully proof assurance in classrooms and schools. COURSE: ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: ASSESSING FOR STUDENT LEARNING Experience and analyze authentic assessment as an accurate means to assess student learning. Discover the importance of communicating learning goals to students. Align

4 those goals and standards with the assessments implemented to guide instruction and evaluate student progress. Study the progression of the standards-based movement and how the Common Core State Standards will better allow educators to prepare students for the future. Collaboration, cooperation, innovation, creativity and critical thinking (all 21 st Century Skills) are demonstrated using interactive hands-on structures and activities. The goal: to engage students living in a global community and ultimately working in a global marketplace. Participants can expect to learn how to successfully encourage students to work cooperatively and collaboratively to THINK, CREATE, SHARE and GROW interdependently. COURSE: UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING: REACHING ALL LEARNERS IN THE DIGITAL AGE A laptop with WIFI capability is required. A practical exploration of digital-age solutions to reach and teach all learners, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to help educators meet the challenge of diverse learners in the 21 st Century: A blueprint for creating flexible, differentiated methods, materials, and assessments in the standards-based digital classroom.

This course is designed to offer educators a spectrum of instructional strategies. Learn how to apply research-based educational strategies to advance the knowledge and skills of your students with exceptionalities. This includes but is not limited to students with ADHD, autism, intellectual, learning, sensory, and emotional differences. Course Number: EDM 615-T22 Dates: Oct 16 Dec 10 COURSE: INCREASING STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY AND SELF-DISCIPLINE IN LEARNING COMMUNITIES Study a three-dimensional model for understanding why students may act irresponsibly in the classroom and what can be done about it. Develop an approach that focuses on students internal dialogues to help them resolve inner conflicts as well as examine strategies for improving responsibility in the learning community. 6 COURSE: REFLECTIVE PRACTICE IN TEACHING This course is offered only online. Prerequisites: RTC Courses Brain-Based Teaching and Learning, and Differentiated Instruction Teaching is a complex and highly skilled activity, and teachers continuously exercise judgement in deciding how to act to support learning mist effectively. Reflective practice enables teachers to move towards expert leadership in their field. Given the nature of teaching, professional development and learning are ongoing. Reflective Practice in Teaching supports the improvement of outcomes and helps to satisfy accountability requirements. Course Number: EDM 635-Y07 Dates: Sep 11 Nov 5 Course Number: EDM 635-Y08 Dates: Oct 2 Nov 26 Course Number: EDM 635-Y09 Dates: Oct 16 Dec 10 COURSE: MOTIVATION: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF INSPIRING CLASSROOM SUCCESS The traditional reward-punishment model does little to promote achievement; however, concrete researched-based ways to motivate students do exist. Motivation as it applies to the learning process will be surveyed: basic human needs, the driving force behind all human behavior, inspiration and peak performance, energizing classroom strategies, and frameworks that encourage change and achievement. 7 COURSE: THE GENDERED BRAIN Current research on the similarities and differences in the male and female brain will be explored, with an in-depth examination of the effects of gender differences and how to provide educational equality enhancing each student s worth using gender-specific activities and techniques to improve teaching. COURSE: THE KINESTHETIC CLASSROOM: TEACHING AND LEARNING THROUGH MOVEMENT Note: This course involves optional physical activities Modeling dynamic movement and kinesthetic activity to enliven K-12 classroom content is a key part of this course. Discover the connection between movement, the brain, and learning. Examine implicit learning, class cohesion activities, content-based kinesthetic activities, brain breaks, and energizers. Use movement to meet standards, improve test scores, and develop life skills. Course Number: EDM 555-J33 Dates: Sep 25 Nov 19 Course Number: EDM 555-J34 Dates: Oct 16 Dec 10 COURSE: THE CULTURALLY DISTINCTIVE CLASSROOM Strategies for classroom management and lesson delivery in a culturally diverse classroom will be examined. The focus is on understanding our national culture in order to understand and appreciate other cultures. A study of multiculturalism, trends in multicultural education through the perspective of the English Language Learner, as well as trends in second language acquisition are key components of this course. COURSE: TEACHING TWEENS AND TEENS FOR OPTIMAL LEARNING Upper elementary, middle, and high school students learn best when their needs are recognized and addressed. Examine the psychology of pre-adolescents and adolescents from a variety of perspectives, including studies in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, and education. Explore research-based strategies to engage all students and improve the depth of their learning. Course Number: EDM Dates: Oct 7, 8, 21, 22, plus an online component after the last day of class. COURSE: ENCOURAGING SKILLFUL, CRITICAL, AND CREATIVE THINKING An exploration and application of instructional strategies to teach students to be better thinkers will be undertaken, including the examination of five researched-based themes: learning to think skillfully, thinking to learn, thinking cooperatively, thinking about one s thinking (metacognition), and thinking big (applying thinking skills and processes to realworld problems). COURSE: TEACHING 2.0: ipads IN EDUCATION NOTE: An ipad is required, applications will be downloaded during this course. ipads are rapidly changing the face of education. Increase knowledge of how the ipad works; learn how data collection, storage, and management can be made more effective; examine applications for classroom use, lesson planning, and presentations. Explore and experience how to better meet the needs of 21 st century learners and streamline data collection and daily management. 9 COURSE: TEACHING WRITING AND THINKING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Examine research-based writing strategies and organizational skills that integrate oral and written communication in order to enhance the learning process and encourage creativity and higher-level thinking. The goal: students become better problem solvers and communicators. Also, investigate various strategies necessary to master curricular goals in today s classroom.
