1 HCM560: Strategic Health Care Management Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Faculty Information Name: Phone: CSU-GC Virtual Office Hours: Course Description and Outcomes This course focuses on strategic investigation, analysis, and planning within the health care environment. Emphasis is placed on combining analytical and emergent views to produce strategic thinking maps to assist health care leaders to acknowledge the reality of change, question current assumptions and activities, collect and review of statistical data relevant to health care and the health care industry, and develop for the future. Additional emphasis is placed on a deeper treatment of sustainability and corporate social responsibility and an overview of the sources of organizational inertia. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Articulate and define the purpose of the steps involved in the strategic planning process. 2. Execute a SWOT analysis and apply the findings to define and organization s competencies and competitive advantages. 3. Think strategically about the competitive and regulatory environment in which healthcare organizations operate and compete. 4. Master conceptual and analytical tools for assessing environmental, marketing, internal, and external factors that should be considered during strategic formulation. 5. Analyze the organizational structures that support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of strategic initiatives.

Locate a strategic plan that is readily available and review it. Because you will be reviewing your own organization s strategic plan in a later assignment, it is important that you select a strategic plan OTHER than your own for this assignment. Based on your readings from Module 1, write a report that fulfills the following requirements: 1. Identify and summarize the long-term goals identified in the plan. 2. Identify and summarize the short-term goals identified in the plan. 3. Summarize the strategic thinking and key stakeholders as identified in the plan. 4. Describe the strategies evident in the plan (corporate-level, divisional-level, organizational-level, and/or unit-level). Your report should: Be approximately 3-5 pages in length Include a minimum of two outside references It is not necessary for you to include a copy of the actual strategic plan, but do be sure to cite it in the reference section of your paper using APA formatting. Review the Portfolio Project description on the Assignments page for Week 8. While the Portfolio Project is not due until the end of Week 8, you will be putting together pieces of it throughout the course.

4 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 This week, you should obtain a copy of your health care organization s strategic plan (or a plan from another organization with which you are familiar). Critical Thinking: SWOT Analysis (85 points) Perform a SWOT analysis of your current place of employment (or a place of employment with which you are very familiar). In a well-written paper, describe the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of the organization. Identify three to four goals that can be used for strategic planning and organizational development. Draw on content from this module s lecture and readings. Use the findings to define your organization s competencies and competitive advantages. Your paper should: Be approximately 3-5 pages in length Follow CSU-Global guidelines Include a minimum of three outside references You will be including a SWOT analysis identifying the organizational competencies and strategic advantages in your Portfolio Project. You should clearly define the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats as part of your final project. You might consider developing one slide (if using PowerPoint) for each of these areas. It is strongly recommended that you complete this section of the portfolio this week. Critical Thinking: Mission and Vision Statement (85 points) Locate your own organization s strategic plan (or the strategic plan for the organization you wish to present in your portfolio project). Review the plan and identify the goals of the organization. Using your knowledge of the SWOT analysis and your work so far in the course, create a new mission and vision statement for the organization with these strategic goals in mind. These should encompass facets of directional strategies and the internal environment analysis described in the text. It is not necessary to include outside sources for this assignment. Your paper should: Be 2-3 double-spaced pages in length You will include a copy of the new mission and vision statements created for this week s Critical Thinking assignment as part of your Portfolio Project. This week you should create a visual of these elements. You do not need to submit anything to your instructor until the final week of the course, as part of the Portfolio Project. Critical Thinking: Peer Reviewed Articles (85 points)

5 Week 6 Week 8 Do a search in the CSU Global Library for five peer-reviewed articles specifically related to strategic alternatives in health care organizations. For each article, provide a brief summary and include a brief analysis of how this information might be helpful for your own organization. Your paper should: Be approximately 4-6 pages in length Critical Thinking: Strategic Plan Report (110 points) Using the strategic plan from your organization, or the organization you have chosen to use for your portfolio, you are now ready to synthesize the information you learned in this course with a thorough evaluation of that plan. Based on your readings from the course, write a report that includes the following items: 1. Identify and summarize the long-term and short-term plans identified in the organization s plan. 2. Summarize the strategic thinking and key stakeholders as identified in the plan. 3. Describe the strategies evident in the plan (corporate-level, divisional-level, organizational-level, and/or unit-level). 4. Include a brief competitive analysis. 5. Describe directional strategies appropriate for the organization. 6. Note strategic alternatives as appropriate. 7. Discuss value-added services as appropriate. Your report should: Be approximately 5-7 pages in length Include a minimum of three outside references other than your textbook It is not necessary for you to include a copy of the actual strategic plan, but do be sure to cite it in the reference section of your paper using APA formatting. You do not need to submit anything this week, but the findings from your own strategic plan (as reported in the Critical Thinking assignment for this module) will be included as part of your project. You should continue to work on your final project and create visuals to present this information. Portfolio Assignment (350 points) For the final portfolio project, you will create a presentation (using PowerPoint or some other visual medium) that you might share with the Board of Directors of your health care organization (or another health care setting with which you are familiar). You will not actually be required to present this to the board, but simply prepare the project for an audience of that caliber. This portfolio project will be an evaluation of the current strategic plan and recommendations for changes to ensure future success of the organization. The project will consist of the visual representations of the following elements: An analysis of the current strategic plan long-term and short-term goals for the organization

6 A SWOT analysis identifying the organizational competencies and strategic advantages A new mission statement A new vision statement A summary of strategic thinking and key stakeholders as identified in the strategic plan for the organization Strategies evident in the plan (corporate-level, divisional-level, organizational-level, and/or unit-level A brief competitive analysis A summary of appropriate directional strategies A summary of appropriate strategic alternatives A summary of appropriate value-adding services Recommendations for changes to ensure the future success of the organization. Required length: PowerPoint slides, or a minute video, webinar, or other visual medium. Be sure to include information with citations used in the presentation. Include speaker s notes for each slide, or a transcript if you use some other visual medium. All written material should be well written and conform to CSU-Global guidelines for APA Style. For project details, see the Portfolio Project Description, which can be accessed from the Week 8 Assignments page. Course Policies Late Work Students are permitted a 7 day grace period during which they may submit a Critical Thinking assignment after the original due date without penalty. Papers submitted between 8 and 14 days after the original due date will be accepted with a potential 10 percent reduction in grade for late submission. Papers submitted 15 or more days beyond the original due date may not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. No Portfolios will be accepted late and no assignments will be accepted after the last day of class unless a student has requested an incomplete grade in accordance with the Incomplete Policy. Grades of FN may impact financial aid or military benefits.

7 I** Students must request an Incomplete through their course instructor. The faculty member will provide the student with the Request for Incomplete Grade form, which must be signed by the student and approved by the faculty member prior to the faculty member submitting to the Office of the Registrar. Incompletes cannot include unsubmitted assignments from the first six (6) weeks of the class as defined by the late policy and may only be awarded to students that have completed 60% of the graded coursework with a passing grade. Incomplete forms must be on file with the Office of the Registrar no later than Thursday of the final week of class. Academic Integrity Students must assume responsibility for maintaining honesty in all work submitted for credit and in any other work designated by the instructor of the course. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, plagiarism, reusing your own work, re-purposing your own work, unauthorized possession of academic materials, or unauthorized collaboration. The Library provides information on how students can avoid plagiarism by understanding what it is and how to use Library and internet resources. Citing Sources with APA Style All students are expected to follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements when citing in APA (based on the APA Style Manual, 6th edition). A link to this document should also be provided within most assignment descriptions on your course s Assignments page. Netiquette Respect the diversity of options among the instructor and classmates and engage with them in a courteous, respectful and professional inner. All posts and classroom communication must be conducted in a professional and respectful manner in accordance with the student code of conduct. Think before you push the Send button.
