2 2 Welcome to Primary Education Leeds Trinity University has an established reputation, regionally and nationally, of being one of the UK s leading providers of teacher training courses. Our outstanding courses are taught by a highly experienced team that understands the learning needs of children, from the early years of 3-7 years, right through to primary education of 7-11 years. Our close partnerships with over 600 primary education and secondary education schools will prepare you for a successful teaching career. You ll learn and apply practical teaching skills by engaging with school-based training, giving you a deep understanding of the Teachers standards. We recognise the diversity of settings where good teachers are needed, so we also give students the chance to complete professional work placements in alternative contexts such as museums, schools abroad and in special provision schools. Teacher Training at Leeds Trinity If you fancy trying archaeology, outdoor activities, experiencing learning in a special school, teaching in France, making a mess in art, hiding under a parachute in early years, singing Spanish songs, going on a bug hunt and visiting places of worship - then I would recommend studying Primary Education at Leeds Trinity University. As well as all the fun, you will also receive a stimulating learning experience from highly qualified tutors who focus on ensuring that you reach your academic as well as your professional potential. We take pride in what we do and we enjoy it - would you like to?

3 3 The work-based placements Leeds Trinity provides are of a high standard, which makes it easier to become what you want to be. We had around eight weeks every year of our degree in schools teaching, which was imperative to actually becoming a teacher. Callum Hudson Primary Education: Later Years Contents 2. Welcome 4. 10 10 Teaching and assessment Learning and teaching methods At Leeds Trinity, we aim to provide an excellent student experience and a personal approach to helping students achieve their academic and professional potential. We have a strong tradition of supporting student employability, with relevant skills embedded in the curriculum and professional work placements included in all our undergraduate programmes. Strategic learning themes The key themes of our strategy are student confidence, professionalism and social responsibility. To help students achieve their potential we emphasise learning as a collaborative process, with a range of student-led and directed activities. This approach ensures that students fully engage in shaping their own learning, developing their critical thinking and reflective skills so that they can identify their own strengths and weaknesses, and use the extensive learning support system we offer to shape their own development. Student-centred learning The learning and teaching on our courses is delivered through a range of student-centred approaches which involve problembased learning, plenty of group work and case study applications. The international work environment demands strong team working ability and collaboration and the everyday learning experience steadily builds up students confidence and skills. We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials both on and off campus. Assessment The modules on these programmes will be delivered by means of formal lectures, group workshops, seminars and blended self-study learning. Access to electronic resources including core e-texts will be made available for most of the modules. A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed. International study We encourage our students to make the most of their degree by studying abroad where you ll expand your horizons while earning valuable credits towards your degree. There are opportunities to study abroad for a semester in your second year with our partner universities in places such as Australia, Canada, the USA, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. Erasmus funding is available to eligible students to help cover the costs of studying in Europe, where some courses may be taught in English. If going abroad for a full semester isn t for you, there are also shortterm study abroad options which are open to all students. These range from a Taiwan Winter Camp, which takes place for two weeks in January, to summer schools during July and August in Australia, Japan, Malaysia and China. Research project In the final year, students conduct a research project or professional learning through work project in which they explore in greater depth a topic of personal academic interest. Furthermore, across all modules in the final year greater student choice is built into the programme allowing you to develop your own area or region of expertise.

11 11 Our lecturers have industry experience and are experts in their fields I love the balance between theory, subject knowledge and professional practice. Having the course structured in this way has made me feel more confident knowing how I can put theory into practice, and what I need to do in order to be a successful teacher. 12 12 Living and studying in a great university city We guarantee a room in our halls on campus to all new students, with the majority of our first year students choosing to live on campus. This means that you ll have a friendly, supportive and secure environment to live in, managed by people who have your best interests at heart. We have over 800 bedrooms on campus, ranging from self-catered en-suite rooms in a shared flat to part-catered accommodation with shared bathrooms. Our accommodation contracts are for an academic year and the price includes heating, electricity and regular cleaning, as well as personal possessions insurance, and free Wi-Fi access. Here are some very big reasons to love living in halls at Leeds Trinity: 1. It s all on campus One of the biggest benefits of studying at a campus university like Leeds Trinity is your accommodation. All of our accommodation is on campus, so you can wake up, grab your breakfast and head to a lecture all within 15 minutes! 2. We own all our accommodation Unlike many other universities, we own all our accommodation. This means you ll always be dealing directly with us, not a third party. 3. A supportive environment Outstanding support is part of the package when you choose Leeds Trinity, and living in halls is no exception. All our halls have Resident Mentors these are current students who live in halls to make sure that you settle in, feel supported and have the best time. 4. You only have to sign up for a 41-week contract All our accommodation options have a 41-week contract. This means you ll pay less for your accommodation than other universities that have l onger minimum contracts. *Please note that students on the two-year accelerated degree course will need to sign up for a 43-week contract due to longer term dates.
