1 Cell Biology for Health Occupations Biology 112 Course Syllabus Cascade Campus Spring 2009 Portland Community College 705 N. Killingsworth Portland, OR INSTRUCTOR: Stephanie Mirkes MAILBOX: Jackson Hall Room 210, Cascade Campus VOIC (503) x Course Description: A laboratory science course designed as a prerequisite course for students who plan to take microbiology and/or anatomy and physiology. Topics will include study of the scientific method, cellular chemistry, cell structure and function, principles of inheritance, and laboratory skills. 5 credits: 4 lecture hours and 3 lab hours Prerequisites: Placement into Math 60 and Writing 115. It is essential that you meet the prerequisites. If you do not, you may be dropped from the course. Instructor: Stephanie Mirkes, adjunct instructor in biology, received her B.S. in zoology from the University of Washington and her M.S. in biology from Portland State University. She worked as a research lab manager at the Oregon Primate Center in the divisions of Neuroscience and Reproductive Endocrinology for 6 years. She has been an instructor at PCC for the past 6 years. Outside hobbies include running, scuba diving, mountain biking, and traveling.

2 Welcome to Cell Biology. This course covers a large amount of material in a short period of time. You are encouraged to study some of the material each day. This term is extremely important because you will be continually asked to refer back to learning from this term (terminology, chemistry, cell physiology, and tissues) in the subsequent terms of A&P and Micro. The best way to succeed in this course is to come to lecture everyday. Studying with your classmates and making flashcards will also help with your success. Lecture outlines will be available on the internet at the following website: Academic Honesty: All lecture and laboratory quizzes, midterms, and finals are closed book. No dictionaries, lists, calculators, or texts are allowed. No student collaboration or talking allowed. Cheating will result in a zero on that assignment. Texts: Lecture: Campbell. They will cover material from the previous week s lecture and are intended to help you keep up with the material. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. There will be NO make-up quizzes.

Absence from lab affects your lab grade as follows: More than 1 absence: grade not better than C More than 2 absences: fail to pass the lab o extra credit is available at any time. Makeup exams will not be given except for documented unforeseen extenuating circumstances. Family vacation is not a reason to miss a test in this class. The following will be used to determine the final course grade: % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D below 60% F Other Grading Options It is your responsibility to learn the consequences of various grading options for your GPA, financial aid, and career planning.
