2 Post-Assessment for the unit: Assess all that was taught in the unit Strategies & Learning Tasks Introduction/Opening: (2-3 minutes) 1. Ask students questions: a. Is there something that makes you extremely happy? Maybe a toy? Or a piece of clothing? b. What if I asked you to share the object that makes you happy? c. Would you share the object with your friend? d. Would sharing your object with your friend be an appropriate behavior? e. How would sharing the object make you feel? Upset? Happy? 2. Today we are going to read the story Rainbow Fish. Rainbow Fish shares something that is important to him with the other fish. I want you to pay attention to what occurs throughout the story and look for the object Rainbow Fish shares with his friends. Presentation: (30 minutes) 1. Begin reading Rainbow Fish. a. While reading Rainbow Fish, use the Velcro board to display what is occurring throughout the story. Bring the story to life by moving the pieces around the board whenever necessary. 2. After reading Rainbow Fish, ask the students a couple key detail questions. a. What was different about Rainbow fish compared to the other fish? (He had multi-colored gills) b. Why did Rainbow Fish become upset? (His only friend left) c. Who told Rainbow Fish to go talk to the Octopus? (A starfish.) d. What did the Octopus tell Rainbow Fish to do? (To share his multi-colored scales) e. Did Rainbow Fish share his scales with his friends? (Yes) f. When Rainbow Fish shared his scales, did he feel happy or sad? (Happy) g. Why do you think Rainbow Fish felt happy by sharing his scales? (Answers may vary. Something along the lines of: Because he was sharing and being kind towards others.) 3. Send students back to their seats. 4. Now we are going to put the events into the correct sequence or order in which they took place. 5. Directions: Color the pictures at the bottom, cut the pictures out, and then glue the pictures in the correct order at the top of the page where boxes are located. 6. Pass out the papers and let the students begin. 7. Students who finish early, can pick a book from the book basket to read. 8. Once everyone is done, have students bring papers and come to carpet area by Smart board. Closure: (10 minutes) 1. The same worksheet I gave students, will be in a drag and drop format on the Smart board. 2. Students will work together to put the pictures in the correct order. (This is a way to help with teamwork of putting pictures in order.) 3. Once students have the pictures in correct order (help students if they are struggling to get the pictures in correct order), we will do a quick review of the sequence of order. (Rainbow Fish s friend is swimming away from him. Rainbow Fish is feeling sad. Rainbow Fish is talking to Starfish. Rainbow Fish is talking to Octopus. Rainbow Fish is giving one friend a scale. Rainbow Fish is happy he gave his friends his colorful scales.) 4. Ask the students: a. At the end of the story, Rainbow Fish was happy because he gave his friends one of his colorful scales. What can you do to make your friends and yourself happy?

3 b. Tell me one thing you learned today about Rainbow Fish or appropriate behavior towards others. (Go around the classroom till each student says one thing they learned.) 5. Collect the completed worksheets to have a chance to see how well the students did with sequencing. Differentiation, Individualized Instruction, and/or Assessment: Students who struggle greatly with cutting, have the sequence squares pre-cut for them or help them get started cutting the squares. Help students who struggle with comprehension to put pictures in correct order. Research and Theory: Bandura believed that people learn best through observing, imitating and modeling various activities while socially working together. Throughout this lesson plan, the students will be observing and watching the felt pieces move around the board and will be looking at the pictures in the book. The pictures will be a great visual appeal for the students to help them comprehend the sequencing of events. The students will then have a chance to take what they observed and will be able to model the sequencing on the worksheet. First the students will quietly work alone so that I can see what they remember. Then the students will work together as a team to put the pictures in order on the Smart board. Throughout this lesson, the students will be able to observe, model and work together in order to sequence the events that occurred in Rainbow Fish. By incorporating audio, visual and hands-on activities, the students will be able to use different learning strategies to help them improve on sequencing different events.
