1 I>clicker 6 Registration Guide for Instructors
2 Why Register? i>clicker is almost like a plug and play tool if you just want to use it to get anonymous feedback in class. However, in most cases, you will want to know which students answered your questions and what responses they gave so you can assign credits for participation or performance. To associate student names with i>clicker responses, you ll need to have students register their i>clicker remotes, each distinguished by a unique code known as remote ID. i>clicker supports four ways of registration. This guide will walk you through each of these registration methods. You will also learn how to unregister students and remove student data when needed. Note that all these registration methods can be used in combination. In-class (Roll Call) Registration Roll call registration is recommended for batch registering classes of fewer than 50 students. Online Registration Online registration is recommended for batch registering classes of more than 50 students. Loan Clicker Occasionally, a student may forget to bring his or her remote or bring in somebody else s remote by mistake. The loan clicker feature allows a student to use a borrowed remote for a particular session. Individual Registration Sometimes you may have students who join your class after batch registration is over, or who somehow did not register successfully online. You can manually register individual students by using the Term or Permanent option of the Loan Clicker feature, or directly register them in i>grader. Unregistering Students and Removing Student Data Sometimes you need to unregister a student (disassociate a student name with a remote ID) or remove the student name and the remote ID altogether, such as in the case of changed clickers or students dropping your class. You can search and remove unregistered remotes easily with i>clicker 6. 1
3 In-class Registration In-class (or role call ) registration is an efficient way to register students in smaller classes. To use roll call registration, 1) Project your computer screen and open the i>clicker application 2) In the Welcome to i>clicker window, select your course title and click Choose. 3) On the i>clicker home screen, double click Start Session to bring out the floating Session Toolbar. 4) On the Session Toolbar, click the options (gear) button and select Roll Call Registration in the drop-down menu. The Roll Call Registration window will appear as shown below. Note that there is a letter to the right of each student name in the Register Now window. 5) Instruct students to first press the letter on their i>clicker remote that correspond to the letter next to their name and then do the same for the second letter that will appear after 2
4 the first letter is pressed. Note that when a letter is pressed, it will turn yellow, as shown below. 6) When a remote is registered, both letters turn yellow and the remote ID appears next to the student name as shown below. The student list will change to green and yellow before successfully registered student names disappear. 7) The registration window will continue cycling through the student names until all registrations are complete or you decide to close the registration window. You can control the speed at which student names appear in the Registration Now window by changing the number in the Allow seconds for viewing option in the bottom right corner, as shown in the screenshot above. Students who accidentally register their remote to the wrong name should press DD on their remote to clear the incorrect registration and then re-enter the correct code. You can also set which student information (last name, first name, student ID) displays on screen in My Settings (i>clicker home screen>my Settings/LMS/Reg tab). You must close the Roll Call Registration window before changing student information there. 3
5 Online Registration If you choose online registration, you need to instruct students to register their remotes in their MyConcordia Portal account and you will need to synchronize the registration database with i>grader later on. To learn how to sync, please refer to i>clicker 6 Synchronization Guide for Instructors. To register online, students will need to: 1) Log into the MyConcordia Portal at 2) In the MyConcordia menu, select Student Services. 3) Select I>clicker Registration. 4) Type their remote ID in the field provided and click Enter. Loaning a Clicker Sometimes one or more students may forget to bring their remotes to class. i>clicker allows you to loan clickers to individual students for a single class session. Please do not use the Loan Clicker button on the i>clicker home screen if you are loaning a clicker for only one session it only allows term-long loan. To loan a clicker for one session, 1) From the i>clicker home screen, click Start Session to bring up the Session Toolbar. 2) On the Session Toolbar, click the gear icon and select Loan Clickers in the drop-down menu. 4
6 3) In the Loan Clicker window, enter the student's Remote ID, select the student name/id from the Student drop-down menu, and select One Session (Loan) from the Register for drop-down menu. 4) Click Save. A message will pop up informing you that the student already has a remote registered and asking you Do you want to register this one too so that the student may use either remote? 5) Click Yes. Note that when you select One Session (Loan), the assigned i>clicker remote ID is tied to that student for one lecture only. This temporarily overrides any permanent registration. The student will receive credit for any votes during that lecture and these will be synchronized with existing scores. In subsequent classes, the student can resume using his/her regular clicker. Individual Registration Individual registration using Loan Clicker You can use the Loan Clicker feature (it does not matter whether the clicker is actually loaned or not) to register an individual student for a term. As mentioned above, if you want to associate a student with a remote for one session, you can only use the Session Toolbar to access this feature. If you want to register a student for a term, you can use either the Loan Clicker button on the i>clicker home screen or the Session Toolbar option menu. When you use the latter, make sure you select the The term (permanent) option. Individual registration using i>grader To register a student from within i>grader, 1) Make sure you have added the student in your Roster.txt so the student s name can appear in the Gradebook. 2) Double click the name of the student. The Student Details window will appear. 3) Click the Add button to bring up the Add Clicker ID window. 5
7 4) Enter the student s remote ID and click Ok. 5) Click Save in the Student Details window and then OK to the final confirmation message. Alternatively, if the student involved has participated in at least one voting session, you can register him or her by working from the student s remote ID: 1) Double click the remote ID. The unregistered clicker window will appear. 2) From the drop down menu labelled Assign to student ID, select the student name/id. 3) Click Save. 6
8 The student will be registered instantly. The remote ID will disappear from the i>grader home screen and the student s name will turn black like the other names already registered, as shown below. Note that for the student, the difference between being manually registered in i>clicker and registering online is that, with manual registration by the instructor, the association between the student and his or her remote ID is set only for that particular course; while with online registration, the association is set for all classes using i>clicker for that particular student. Removing Student Data You may have students who voted in only a few sessions and then dropped your class. This section will show you how to remove these student data from i>clicker. If the students you want to remove from i>clicker are registered, you need to first unregister them individually by following the steps provided below, and then remove student name/id and remote IDs separately. To unregister a student Please refer to the screenshot on the next page. 1) Double click the i>grader icon in your iclicker Win v6.4.2 or iclicker Mac v6.4.2 folder; click Run to open the application. 2) In the Welcome to i>grader window, select your course title and click Choose. 3) On the i>grader home screen, double click the student s name. The Student Details window will appear. 4) Select the remote ID and click Remove ; click OK to the confirmation message. 7
9 5) Click Save ; click OK to the final confirmation message. Note that after you unregister a student, the student s name will remain on the i>grader home screen but turn red; his or her remote ID(s) will reappear, also in red, with the voting data staying with the remote ID. 10 To remove student data With i>clicker v6, you can delete individual remote IDs from the i>grader home screen, but you have to delete student names from the Roster.txt file. To delete an individual remote ID, 1) Open i>grader and choose your course. 2) On the i>grader home screen, click on the remote ID you want to delete. The Unregistered Clicker window will appear. 3) Click on the Remove button, click yes to confirm, and then Save. When you have multiple remote IDs you wish to remove, you can use a function that allows you to sort out all unregistered remote IDs. This function can be accessed by clicking the person icon on the i>grader home screen (see the screen shot below). In the window that opens up, you can access Unregistered i>clicker(s) or Unregistered student(s) by clicking the corresponding tab on the top. With Unregistered i>clickers selected, you can a full list of unregistered remote IDs. You can place a checkmark next to the remote ID you wish to delete. You can also use the Select All and Deselect All button on the right if needed. Keep in mind that when you delete a remote ID, the voting data associated with this remote ID will also be permanently deleted. Therefore, before taking this action, you need to make 9
11 sure that you are not deleting any loaned clicker ID and all staying students are already registered. A quick way to identify unwanted remote IDs is to use the Search function. Clicking the Search button on the right will bring up the Search Options window, where you can filter out remote IDs associated with unusually low points (indicating the remote users have dropped the class) by defining a value or a range of values for Points Average or Points Total based on your knowledge of how many points are unusual. You can also search for a specific remote ID by typing in the full or part of the remote ID. After filling in relevant boxes and clicking the Search button, you will be brought back to the previous window. The clicker ID(s) that match your search standard will have a checkmark next to them. You can then delete them by clicking the Delete Log(s) button. With the Unregistered student(s) tab selected, you have the option to export a list of unregistered students, but, again, you can only delete student names in your Roster.txt file. 10
