1 Alyssa D Onofrio 26 September 2013 Interdisciplinary Lesson Plan FINAL DRAFT EPSY 582L256 Unit: The Underground Railroad Grade Level: 4 th grade Estimated Time: 45-1 hour Title of Lesson #1: Harriet Tubman Overview: Sometimes it is hard to sacrifice yourself for others when it put yourself in jeopardy. This woman s name was Harriet Tubman and she helped 300 slaves escape from their brutal lives. Students will imagine how slaves must have felt during this time, as well as Harriet Tubman. Students will understand how Harriet Tubman lived her life, as well as, the brutality of other slaves. Students will also learn how Harriet Tubman was the only slave who knew how to read and write. Students will also learn how the Underground Railroad was significant and how Harriet Tubman was able to help them escape without them getting caught. Students will complete a secret letter in Harriet Tubman s point of view as well as tell your story as a slave putting themselves in her shoes. Social Studies Standards: SS.2: 1: Word History: Use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives. SS 3: 2: Geography: use a number of research skills (e.g. computer databases, periodicals, census reports, maps, standard reference works, interviews, surveys) to locate and gather geographical information about the issues and problems Common Core Reading Literature Standard: Key Ideas and Details: Standard 1: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Common Core Writing Standard: Text Types and Purposes: Standard 3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. a. Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. b. Use dialogue and description to develop experiences
2 and events or show the responses of characters to situations. c. Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events. d. Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. e. Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events. Essential Unit Question: How was Harriet Tubman a significant figure during this time and what were her contributions to the Underground Railroad? Resources/Materials for this lesson: Computer with Internet access Writing a secret letter worksheet (print one for each student) Tell your story as a slave worksheet (print one for each student) A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman by David Adler Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad by Ann Petry Freedom Train: The story of Harriet Tubman by Dorothy Sterling Pencils Crayons Markers Board Procedures/Activities: Before learning: Have students watch the video clip: The story of Harriet Tubman as another hook ( As a class, we will do a KWL chart about Harriet Tubman and fill in the Know part based on what we watched on the video I will have students in five groups of four taking book walks on the Picture book of Harriet Tubman, Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad and Freedom Train: The story of Harriet Tubman Each group will have ten minutes for the book walk. We will come as a whole group to discuss Harriet Tubman and why she was significant during this horrific time. At this time, students will individually fill in the W part of their KWL chart.
3 During learning: Groups of four will be divided into pairs to go into the stations. Students will rotate every ten minutes. Station one: Students will write a Tell your story as a slave from Harriet Tubman s point of view when she was a slave. Guidelines will be in this station explaining my expectations for this assignment. Station two: Students will complete the Writing a secret letter worksheet in Harriet Tubman s point of view. I will scaffold this activity by having the pairs sharing different topics that should be in the letter, students can draw what they want to say in the letter and I will provide web so students can divide their parts of the letters in bubble Station three: Students can complete a Code Word and Phrases worksheet to decode the messages on the sheet of paper and create a word key on how Harriet Tubman would be able to decode these codes. Station four: Students will create a map creating the trail on where the Underground Railroad went. After learning: We will collaborate as a class and fill in the L part of the KWL chart as a class Students will reflect in their Social Studies journals three reasons why Harriet Tubman was significant, what was interesting about this lesson, what was less interesting about this lesson As a teacher, I will ask myself reflection questions such as what went well during this lesson? What could be improved? How can I scaffold my lesson better? What can I do with my class tomorrow? As a whole class, we can play Harriet Tubman Trivia where students are back in their groups of four for teams in which we review everything we have learned about Harriet Tubman Evaluation/Assessment: Complete the Tell your Story as a slave Worksheet Ability to be able to write in Harriet Tubman s point of view in Writing a secret letter Codes and Phrases worksheet Map template Web template for drawings and writing Vocabulary: Freedom Underground Railroad Moses Abolitionist
4 Conductor Tell your story as a slave Worksheet: Directions: After discussing the authority and how slaves were treaty brutally by their owners, imagine yourself in the slaves shoes. Picture your living conditions as well as the way that you are being treated. In an essay format, write about your living conditions, your rights as a slave, punishment as well as your safety.
5 Writing a secret letter worksheet: Directions: SHHH!! You are a Harriet Tubman and have committed an illegal task by convincing slaves to escape from their owners. You have spread the word to several slaves as well as your neighboring slaves. It is your job to make sure that the slaves escape quietly without getting caught by their owners or the conductors on the train. Write a secret letter to the slave or family member with the steps how to come about this escape as well as encouraging them to get to their new homes safely. Dear Slave member/family,
