3 Computing Learn to Program and create your very own APPs Room: Computing Room This course links to the new KS2 Computing Curriculum and will investigate how APPs are created using MIT App Inventor Environment. The pupils will learn how to program using the environment and then produce an APP which they can then access either online or an Android Phone. - 1) Understand how a basic algorithm is used in order to solve a given problem. 2) Be able to program basic code in the MIT APP Inventor Environment. 3) Understand how to create different instructions using the block editing tools. 4) Understand how to store and retrieve different Apps for different purposes. Follow Up:- The students will be able to use the APP builder in their own time to create projects that build on what they have completed in this course. The software is open source and so can be downloaded by anyone.
4 A Comedy of Errors! Students will be looking at A Comedy of Errors. We will use a Shakespeare Schools Festival script and they will spend the first half of the workshop looking at Characterisation skills, and then rehearsal skills before performing a short extract of the play. Students will: 1. learn how to use body language to communicate characterisation 2. learn how to use vocal delivery to communicate to an audience 3. learn how to work as an ensemble 4. use their skills to perform a comedic piece of Shakespeare Benefits of the workshop: For students who don t have designated Drama lessons within primary school this workshop will give them a taster of Year 7 lessons as well as introducing the Shakespeare Schools Festival to them. This is also a light hearted way of introducing the work of Shakespeare through the use of comedy.
5 English Workshop! Welcome to the English Department at Holy Family and welcome to our transition workshop suitable for 30 x Year 5 students lasting 2 hours. Part 1 15 minutes Team spell! A team game that works on spelling words correctly in teams. The best spelling team wins a prize! There s all to spell for. 15 minutes Homophone bingo! Roll up for a round of homophone bingo, a chance for you to show what you know about homophones. Bingo prizes for the homophone champion! 30 minutes Ballads! This is our poetry section of the workshop that allows us to read a funny ballad together, to find the features of the poem and to play around with the rhyme scheme. A great introduction to poetry and a chance to write your own little stanza! 5 minute break during the break you will have the chance to play some of our grammar games and to let us know what you love about English. Part 2 15 minutes Kung Fu punctuation! Test out your Kung Fu skills on our sentences! Make sure those sentences are punctuated properly with your amazing Kung Fu moves. 30 minutes Locate and retrieve the info! We all love to locate and retrieve things, like footballs and Frisbee, so here is your chance to read an exciting text and show you can retrieve the right information. You ll be using your homophone, Kung Fu punctuation and spelling skills learnt earlier in the workshop here. 10 minutes Round up! It s always good to round off the day with a quiet reflection of what we ve done and learnt together. We ll play some music, get you thinking on your own and then swapping your thoughts with others. 6 Enterprise Can be linked to ICT, Literacy, Numeracy, Economic Understanding Class size: up to 26 Duration: 2-3 hours Room: S5 / M13 This can be linked to PHSEE curriculum alongside key skills in numeracy and literacy. 1. Learn how to think like an entrepreneur 2. Work as a team to develop ideas for a product 3. Design their product 4. Learn how to calculate costs 5. Learn how to calculate revenues 6. Use marketing tools to advertise their product 7. Present their ideas to a set of Dragons in the style of Dragons Den 8. Develop analytical skills and self-evaluation All activities have been risk assessed and all possible dangers have been addressed. Pupils will be reminded about not touching plugs, sockets, wiring etc during the session. All pupils will be able to present their work as an assembly back in school showing other students the ideas they have come up with. They will could use their printed work to develop a display of their enterprise task linking this with other areas of the Key Stage 2 curriculum such as Art.
7 Geography Weather of our school grounds Suitable for: Years 4 to 6 Room: School Grounds Activity with part in classroom Pupils working in groups of 3 learn about the weather in England and the idea of microclimates. The microclimates of the school ground are explored through practical activities 1. Understand what we mean by climate and weather; 2. Develop their use of fieldwork equipment; 3. Understand changing weather over small distances using mouse blood game. 4. Plan a picnic area in the school grounds based on weather conditions; 5. Develop their decision making skills based on the evidence they collect. All activities have been risk assessed and represent typical experiments performed by Year 7 students. Pupils will be supervised by a Geography specialist throughout. All pupils will have a booklet to record their observations and apply their understanding of each experiment to make scientific conclusions. This can be followed up at a later date.
8 History A study of the Black Death Room: Classroom In the new national curriculum students are still required to study everyday life in medieval Britain. This includes the importance of religion at the time and its influence on everyday life. It also includes the state of public health at the time and their knowledge or lack of knowledge about the causes of illness. 1. Identify the symptoms of the bubonic and pneumonic plagues. 2. Describe the difference between the bubonic and pneumonic plague. 3. Describe the beliefs that were held at the time about the causes of the plague. 4. Describe the treatments that were used at the time to try and prevent and/or cure people from the plague. 5. Attempt to categorise causes and treatments into supernatural and natural. 6. Attempt to explain why there was a great belief in supernatural causes and treatments for the Black Death during this time. The lessons will take place in a classroom from start to finish with a seating plan. Students will be required to walk around the classroom but will be managed by the teacher and support staff. Clear instructions will be given and all student movement will be supervised. Students will be given links to relevant websites and you tube clips to supplement the lesson and extend their learning.
9 Mathematics Bearings and Distances Holy Family Mathematics Room: LRC for introduction then school grounds Pupils working in groups of 4 are given instructions in the form of three-figure bearings and distances in metres. This enhances their understanding of angles and measurement. 1. Learn how to read a magnetic compass. 2. Understand how to interpret a three-figure bearing. 3. Learn how to estimate a one metre length. 4. Use these skills in a practical activity. The activity will be risk assessed and will be supervised by staff. Pupils will need to wear appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear. Pupils could design an orienteering course in the grounds of their own primary school.
10 MEDIA STUDIES (Photoshop) Can be linked to any topic Class size: up to 25 Duration: 2-3 hours Room: F2 (a colour printer will be required) This can be linked to curriculum topics or for special occasions (eg: Cards, posters, animals, dinosaurs, history, visit montage s etc) 1. Learn how to set up a page in Photoshop 2. Understand the difference between dpi and ppi 3. Learn how to use basic tools 4. Learn how to apply effects 5. Learn how to import images 6. Learn how to resize, crop, rotate and transform images 7. Learn how to add text, change font, colour and size 8. Work individually to create a design piece (to be identified through discussion with Primary teacher 1 week before the class) All activities have been risk assessed and all possible dangers have been addressed. Pupils will be reminded about not touching plugs, sockets, wiring etc during the session. All pupils will have a minimum of one piece of work printed out in colour to add to displays at school and link to curriculum or occasion topic identified. All pupils will have learned new skills and be able to apply these at home with similar software, in school or when they move to Secondary level.
11 MFL: Bonjour! Hallo! Hola! Konichi-wa! Duration: 4 x 25mins Room: MFL classrooms Pupils will complete a series of workshops in the four languages on offer at the Holy Family Catholic School; French, German, Spanish and Japanese. These workshops will link to the language lessons that pupils have experienced in their primary school. 1. develop their cultural knowledge. 2. be able to greet a native speaker appropriately. 3. become more aware or the sounds used in each language. 4. be able to introduce themselves in a foreign language. 5. ask and answer questions in a foreign language. 6. develop their oral confidence and fluency. 7. be able to adapt key phrases for themselves. 8. understand some basic questions in a foreign language. 9. engage with some of the sound patterns from the 4 languages. 10. become more familiar with MFL lessons and staff at the Holy Family. Structure: Pupils will be based in a languages classroom and have a 25 minute introductory workshop from one of our specialist language teachers. After each workshop, pupils will move onto another language teacher in another language classroom. This will happen until each group have covered all four languages. At the end of the workshops, pupils will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned. These will help the pupils to practise the vocabulary from the sessions. Small prizes and stickers relating to the language will then be awarded to the pupils.
12 Music Looking at Film Music Room: Music Technology Suite Pupils explore how film music composers use the elements of music to convey various moods and action. Pupils use music technology software to compose a piece of music to accompany scenes from a film. 1. Understand the importance of music in films 2. Describe the elements of music 3. Explain how the elements of music are used to create different moods 4. Know the terms for specific film music techniques 5. Identify musical devices in film music 6. Suggest appropriate musical devices for film scenes 7. Create a musical storyboard 8. Use music technology to record and edit music 9. Compose music for given film scenes 10. Evaluate film music compositions All activities have been risk assessed. Pupils will be supervised using all equipment. Pupils will be given a storyboard sheet to plan out a piece of music for scenes from a film of their choice.
13 Product Design Curriculum link : Class size: up to 18 Room: Technology Lab Pupils will undertake a focused practical task to produce a stand for a mobile phone. Use heat processes to shape acrylic Finish the edges of acrylic using various grades of abrasion Apply vinyl writing to their stands All activities have been risk assessed and represent typical manufacturing procedures performed by Year 7 students. All PPE will be provided.
14 Religious Education Room: R9 Pupils working in groups of 3 or 4 will investigate different religious teachings on creation stories, how we can look after the environment and why this is important, making links to religious stories from around the world, e.g. Genesis story, Red Indian, Pan Ku Chinese story. 1. Investigate the different world stories of creation in their groups 2. Create a brief summary of the key events to feedback to the rest of the class 3. Describe using their investigations which story meant the most to them 4. Explain why creation stories have a message for us today 5. Understand that our climate is changing 6. Suggest how we can be good stewards of the earth 7. Observe the different ideas within the class 8. know how to be a good steward of the earth every day All activities have been risk assessed and represent typical activities undertaken within Year 7 Religious Education classrooms. All pupils will have a booklet to record their investigations and apply their understanding of each of the creation stories to their understanding of why we should look after the environment today. Additionally they will have resources provided about climate change and what difference they can make. This can be followed up at a later date.
15 Science CSI Keighley Room: Science Laboratory Pupils working in groups of 3 explore aspects of forensic science including fingerprinting, fibre analysis and footprint analysis. 1. Learn how to take and analyse fingerprints, 2. Use scientific equipment to analyse hair and fibres, 3. Use chemical techniques to analyse ink samples 4. Analyse handwriting, 5. Use chemical tests to analyse and identify trace chemicals, 6. Apply their knowledge to solve a crime. All activities have been risk assessed and represent typical experiments performed by Year 7 students. Pupils will wear safety goggles and be supervised by a Science specialist throughout. All pupils will have a booklet to record their observations and apply their understanding of each experiment to make scientific conclusions. This can be followed up at a later date.
16 Science - A Journey Around the Solar System Room: Science Laboratory Pupils working in groups of 3 visit different areas of the solar system, exploring the conditions of the sun, moon and the planets through 10 exciting practical experiments. 1. identify the link between distance from the sun and temperature 2. measure the size of impact craters on Mercury, 3. describe how acid affects metals on Venus, 4. explain why life is found on Earth and not other planets 5. understand the forces that cause rockets to lift off the moon 6. suggest what Mars is made from 7. measure wind speeds on Jupiter 8. observe the ice crystals like those around Saturn 9. see how cold Uranus is 10. know how to burn the methane of Neptune All activities have been risk assessed and represent typical experiments performed by Year 7 students. Pupils will wear safety goggles and be supervised by a Science specialist throughout. All pupils will have a booklet to record their observations and apply their understanding of each experiment to make scientific conclusions. This can be followed up at a later date.
