1 Bachelor of Applied Graduates will have a sound understanding of the dynamic and changing environment in which managers operate in New Zealand and internationally. This knowledge and expertise will be underpinned by a breadth of business expertise which includes an historical perspective of business development within New Zealand and an understanding of multicultural influences on business operation. Graduates will understand and have the skills to implement sustainable focused business practices. On reaching the workplace, graduates will be able to integrate into their workplace environment quickly, having already spent time through their course of study in a work context applying the knowledge and skills of the curriculum. Students may choose to complete either a single or double major from the areas of; Human s Project Production and Operations. The Bachelor of Applied may be completed in three years full time study or part time. If you have already completed the NZ Diploma in Business, please contact the Commerce and Computing team to discuss what papers may be credited to your degree programme of study. 75 elective credits of this programme are a principal feature of its design. They allow students to complement the core papers specific to the degree, and compulsory papers in a major, with papers of their choice thus allowing them to further enhance their future career or personal goals. Elective papers may be chosen from any papers at levels 5, 6 or 7 and relevant pre-requisite papers must be completed prior. Core papers for all Majors BAM5.001* BAM5.002* BAM5.003* Professional Communication Business Heritage, Culture and Sustainability To enable students to understand financial statements and reports and be able to analyse and interpret business performance for sole traders and small companies. To enable students to apply communication knowledge and skills in the evolving context of New Zealand and global business. To develop and enhance awareness and knowledge of New Zealand in terms of its history, heritage and commercial development by exploring key historical events that have occurred within this cultural, political and social framework.

BAM5.005* Economics To enable students to apply elements of economic theory with emphasis on the contemporary New Zealand environment. BAM5.006* BAM5.007* Marketing Business Computing To enable students to have a working knowledge of fundamental marketing concepts relevant to contemporary organisations. To enable students to understand, discuss, evaluate and apply information technology to meet business requirements. BAM5.008* To develop knowledge and skills for management in organisations. BAM6.001* BAM6.002* BAM7.001 Applied Research Methodology Cooperative Education Project To enable students to identify a management problem, and research and apply management concepts and tools to find and recommend possible solutions to the problem. To introduce students to the key analytical tools used within business and the implications for managerial decisions. Students will learn to apply appropriate research methodologies to identify and solve a business related problem. To develop capabilities related to chosen area of specialisation, in a hands on immersion in industry practice. This enables students to apply their learning, test the relevance of academic theories to the workplace and to reflect critically on this relationship between their academic study and industry practice. In addition to the core papers for the Bachelor of Applied, your choice of major will then direct you to a number of compulsory papers to complete. Detailed below are those identified by each major. Compulsory papers for Majors Note: To meet the Chartered Accountants Australia NZ (CAANZ) academic component for admission to the College of Associate Chartered Accountants (ACA) and Certified Practicing Accountants Australia (CPA), students must complete the 22 papers indicated with an asterisk (*), totalling 360 credits. BAM5.010* BAM6.003* Practices Intermediate Financial To provide students with the skills and knowledge to record and process financial transactions and prepare financial statements and cash budgets for entities. To apply Generally Accepted Practice (GAAP) to prepare and present general purpose financial reports for a company and evaluate a listed company for the purpose of shareholder investment.

To enable students to apply knowledge of taxation rules to New Zealand taxable entities in a range of situations. BAM6.006* BAM6.007* BAM6.008* BAM6.009* BAM7.003* BAM7.004* BAM5.009* BAM7.018* Finance Auditing and Assurance The Law of Business Entities Information Systems Advanced Financial Advanced Business Statistical Analysis Industry Project (Professional ) To enable students to apply financial management knowledge and skills to a small or medium size business for decision-making purposes. To enable students to understand the professional, ethical, legal and procedural issues that are relevant to modern auditing and assurance industry. Students will also develop an understanding of the theoretical background and current research interests in the auditing profession. To enable students to demonstrate an understanding of the legal requirements for establishment, operation and the cessation as applied to various forms of business entity. Students learn to design, implement, operate, manage and control accounting information systems (AIS). They will also develop practical knowledge, understanding and skills in the use of spreadsheets, databases, and accounting packages, and an appreciation of evolving technologies. Knowledge and skills in information technology and accounting information systems is regarded as essential by professional bodies and employers. Provides students with sufficient theoretical understanding of New Zealand s financial reporting environment and sufficient technical skills to prepare complex financial statements that comply with general accepted accounting practice. Students gain a wider appreciation of financial reporting to enable them to respond and contribute to the development of the accounting profession. Provides students with advanced techniques and skills to be able to provide and evaluate accounting information, including its behavioural implications and contribute to organisational success. To enable students to make sense of numbers, graphs and fundamental statistical concepts; and to use, interpret and report them in a meaningful way in business practice. This paper also provides a foundation for further study, research and project management requiring an analytical approach. To develop capabilities related to accounting, in a hands-on immersion in an accounting practice. To enable students to apply their learning, test the relevance of academic theories to the workplace and to reflect critically on this relationship between their academic study and industry practice. To enable students
4 Bachelor of Applied to carry out a significant work assignment for the host organisation on a topic in a field allied to their major and present a project report in conjunction with an academic supervisor. The project forms the final component of the programme and requires students to produce work of the highest quality as evidence of their development. NOTE: This is a 45 credit paper. Compulsory papers for Human Majors BAM6.013 Industrial Relations To provide knowledge of current Industrial Relations legislation, processes and practices, and understand the relationship of the parties involved. BAM6.014 Human s To provide students with the knowledge to understand the roles, functions and application of human resource management within contemporary New Zealand organisations. BAM6.015 BAM7.005 BAM7.006 Organisational Behaviour Advanced Human Contemporary Issues in Human To enable students to evaluate, analyse and assess the impact that individuals, groups and structures have on the behaviour of people within organisations. Students will develop an analytical awareness of their personal and interpersonal behaviour and the effect of that behaviour as members of formal and informal working groups. Students will synthesise an understanding of introductory social and psychological phenomena in organisations at individual, group and inter-group levels. To create an awareness of how human resource strategy and practice can support and be integrated with business strategy. For students to be able to critically examine contemporary issues in human resource management locally, nationally and internationally. Once identified the issues will be evaluated for their impact on the human resource professional and the human resource function within organisations. The issues researched and analysed will reflect the dynamic nature of the current HRM environment. Compulsory papers for Project Majors BAM6.006 BAM6.016 Finance Project To enable students to apply financial management knowledge and skills to a small or medium size business for decision-making purposes. Enables students to learn the basic principles and terminology of the profession of project management, and apply this to create project plans. Students will also be given a brief introduction to using project management software tools such as (MS Project ).
5 Bachelor of Applied BAM6.017 BAM7.008 BAM7.013 Operations Integration Advanced Project Gives students an understanding of the concepts and analytical methods that contribute to the systematic direction and control of the processes that transform inputs into completed goods and services. Operations management focuses on the management of people and resources through systematic management and feedback. Students will gain introductory knowledge and experience of an operation s contribution to the macromanagement environment. To develop skills, knowledge and expertise in the related disciplines of supply chain management, business facility layout/modification, and engineering economics, to ensure resource integration occurs at various levels for business operation, technical management, project management and production of goods or services. Enables students to learn the principles of the project management body of knowledge and cover the content of the Project Institute PMBOK and its application in the workplace. Compulsory papers for Operations & Production Majors BAM6.016 BAM6.017 BAM7.007 BAM7.008 Project Operations Product Development Integration Enables students to learn the basic principles and terminology of the profession of project management, and apply this to create project plans. Electives: Outside of the compulsory papers for each major, you will be required to complete a number of papers to complete your 360 credits for the degree. These may be chosen from any of the other majors compulsory papers identified above OR from the additional non major related paper as detailed below. BAM6.021 Principles of Leadership To enable students to understand concepts and apply principles of leadership. Students will create a personal plan to develop leadership capabilities.
